Silentnight UltraGel Miracoil Pillowtop Mattress review: a long-term test in a very warm bedroom

With the help of my husband, I've been testing the Silentnight UltraGel Miracoil Pillowtop Mattress to see whether it’s worth the investment for real family life, mixed sleep styles and a bedroom that runs hot year-round.

What Mumsnet users say

My verdict

In short: A supportive yet indulgent pillowtop mattress that genuinely improves sleep for couples and hot sleepers, without sacrificing structure or durability.

Full verdict: Replacing a mattress is one of those adult jobs that feels oddly emotional. Our last super king was bought in the United Arab Emirates in 2014 and was, frankly, indestructible. A decade-old IKEA mattress that survived a country move in a container for six weeks is not something you throw out lightly.

But we were very ready for an upgrade, and we’ve now been sleeping on the Silentnight UltraGel Miracoil Pillowtop Mattress (super king, £1,090) for seven months. Testing has been completed with the help of my husband and our two small dogs (yes, they sleep in our bed; no, I don’t care). Now, at this point, seven months feels like a fair stretch to tell you whether something is actually good, rather than just exciting because it’s new.

This mattress is positioned as a medium/firm option with a plush pillowtop, a gel-infused comfort layer designed to help with temperature regulation and Miracoil springs for zoned support and reduced partner disturbance. Silentnight sells it with a 60-night sleep guarantee and a five-year warranty, and it’s 29cm deep, so it’s chunkier than your average mattress.

Read on for my full, in depth review, and to see why this mattress has earned its place in our best mattress for back pain guide.

How I’ve tested the Silentnight Ultragel Miracoil mattress

As mentioned, I’ve been testing the Silentnight UltraGel Miracoil Pillowtop Mattress in super king size for seven months, sleeping on it every night with my husband and our two small dogs in a warm dormer bedroom.

Our home is well insulated, which means the bedroom regularly gets hot, even in winter, making this a real test of the mattress’s cooling claims.

We replaced a decade-old IKEA mattress, so the change in support, comfort and motion isolation has been easy to spot. Over the testing period, we’ve assessed how the mattress feels night after night, how well it supports different sleep styles, how it copes with movement from two adults and pets and whether it’s held its shape and comfort over time, rather than just in the first few weeks.

Does the mattress perform well?

After plenty of months of nightly use, the Silentnight UltraGel Miracoil Pillowtop Mattress has performed consistently well, which is really what you want from your mattress. There’s been no sense of it “settling” in a bad way, no gradual loss of comfort and no need to keep adjusting pillows or sleep positions to compensate for the mattress underneath.

What stands out is how stable it feels across the entire surface. Whether sitting on the edge to put socks on, sprawling diagonally (me), or staying firmly on one side (my husband), the support feels even and predictable. It doesn’t dip when weight is applied and doesn’t feel like it’s working harder in some spots than others.

It still feels good at the end of a long day when you collapse into bed, which is the real test. There’s enough cushioning from the pillowtop to feel inviting, but enough structure underneath to stop you feeling like you’re sinking into a soft pit.

Setup was very easy for us - especially as the delivery men did most of the heavy lifting for us

Is the Silentnight UltraGel Miracoil Pillowtop mattress durable?

So far, yes - and that’s one of the biggest positives.

After several months of use by two adults and two dogs, the mattress still looks and feels as it did when it arrived. There’s no visible sagging, no soft spot developing on my husband’s side and no sense that the pillowtop has compressed unevenly. That’s reassuring, as pillowtop mattresses can sometimes be the first to show wear.

We rotate the mattress head to toe, as recommended, and it’s responded well to that. The hand-tufted construction seems to be doing its job, keeping all the layers in place rather than letting them migrate or bunch up over time.

I also vacuum the mattress regularly using a Hoover HMC5 and it’s held up well to that too, with no pulled fabric or wear marks. Based on how it’s performing so far, it feels like it could realistically last the eight to ten years Silentnight suggests, rather than needing replacement much sooner.

How easy is it to unbox the mattress and set up?

This isn’t a mattress-in-a-box situation, and honestly, for a super king of this depth and weight, that’s no bad thing.

Delivery was handled by two people and included carrying the mattress to our room of choice, which was essential given our U-shaped staircase and dormer bedroom. The mattress is heavy and substantial, so trying to wrestle it upstairs solo would have been impossible.

Once in place, setup was straightforward. Because it’s not vacuum-packed, there’s no waiting period for it to expand or off-gas, and it was ready to sleep on straight away. The only thing to plan ahead for is bedding - at 29cm deep, standard fitted sheets won’t cut it, so deep fitted sheets are a must. A lesson I learned when I kept finding our fitted sheet around the pillowtop, but not reaching to cover the rest of the mattress.

Everyone has found the bed very comfortable during testing (there's been a few times the kids have snuck in)

Is the Silentnight UltraGel Miracoil Pillowtop mattress good value for money?

This is not a budget mattress if you’re in search of a double, king or super king, but it does feel like you’re paying for something tangible rather than just a brand name.

Compared with cheaper mattresses we’ve owned in the past, the difference in comfort, support and partner disturbance is noticeable. Sleep quality has improved, complaints about overheating have dropped dramatically and we’re no longer waking each other up as often during the night. Over time, those things matter far more than saving a couple of hundred pounds upfront IMO.

When you spread the cost over the realistic lifespan of the mattress, especially in a super king size, the value feels much more reasonable. The 60-night sleep guarantee also helps justify the spend, as it gives you time to properly live with it rather than making a snap judgement after a few nights.

How comfortable is the Silentnight UltraGel Miracoil Pillowtop mattress?

Comfort is where this mattress really earns its keep. The pillowtop gives an immediate sense of softness when you lie down, which makes getting into bed feel pleasant rather than just functional. At the same time, the underlying Miracoil support stops that softness from becoming saggy or unsupportive.

For us, it’s worked well across different sleep styles. I move around a lot during the night as I can sleep on both sides, while my husband is more static. There’s enough give around the shoulders and hips to feel cushioned, but enough firmness through the middle to keep your spine aligned.

It’s also comfortable for non-sleeping activities, like reading or scrolling in bed, without feeling like you’re perched awkwardly on the edge.

Does it regulate temperature well?

This was one of the main reasons we wanted to test this mattress, and it’s delivered on that front.

Our bedroom gets very warm - even in winter - and my husband sleeps hot all year round. Since switching to the Silentnight UltraGel Miracoil Pillowtop Mattress, he’s been noticeably more comfortable at night, with far fewer complaints about overheating.

The mattress doesn’t feel cold, but it doesn’t trap heat either. The gel-infused layer and breathable construction seem to help air circulate rather than build up warmth, which is particularly impressive given the pillowtop. For me, as the colder sleeper, it hasn’t felt chilly or uncomfortable - just neutral. Plus, it’s easier for me to just wear thicker pyjamas if I feel I need to warm up, which isn’t exactly a big deal.

Is there motion isolation with this mattress?

Yes, and it’s one of the most noticeable improvements compared with our old mattress. I’m a restless sleeper, and on our previous mattress my movements would regularly wake my husband. On this one, that happens far less often. The Miracoil system seems to absorb movement rather than letting it ripple across the bed, which is why it compares well with other best pocket sprung mattresses for couples.

The dogs are the real proof. They tend to sneak into the bed in the early hours, and we rarely feel them arrive anymore. If you share your bed with a partner, children or pets, that reduction in movement transfer can make a big difference to how well you sleep overall.

Do you need a mattress topper with this mattress?

We’ve found the mattress to be comfortable enough without a topper - plus, I suspect if you were to place a mattress topper on this one, you wouldn’t find a fitted sheet deep enough to cover both items thanks to the pillowtop.

The motion isolation and cooling properties have been the biggest pros for us

Are there any health and safety concerns with this mattress?

There are no major red flags from a health and safety perspective. The mattress uses a chemical-free fire-retardant cover, which many people prefer and the medium/firm support offers good spinal alignment for most sleepers. While it’s not a medical product and won’t magically fix back pain, the combination of support and pressure relief makes it a sensible option if you’re trying to avoid aggravating existing aches.

From a practical point of view, the main thing to note is compatibility with your bed base. If you’re using slats, they need to be no more than 7cm apart to properly support the mattress and avoid premature wear. Given the depth and weight, a sturdy frame is important.

Who is the Silentnight UltraGel Miracoil Pillowtop mattress best suited for?

The Silentnight UltraGel Miracoil Pillowtop Mattress is best suited to people who want a balance of comfort and support, rather than an ultra-soft or ultra-firm sleeping surface. The medium/firm feel, combined with the plush pillowtop, makes it a good option for couples with different sleep preferences, as it manages to feel cushioning without compromising on structure.

It’s particularly well suited to:

  • couples, thanks to the excellent motion isolation and reduced roll-together

  • hot sleepers who struggle with overheating at night

  • combination sleepers who move between positions

  • people who want pressure relief without feeling like they’re sinking into the mattress

It’s less likely to suit those who prefer a very soft, sink-in mattress or anyone unwilling to rotate their mattress regularly. But for most people looking for a supportive, comfortable and grown-up mattress that works night after night, it’s a very strong contender.

Are Silentnight mattresses worth it?

In short, yes, particularly if you’re looking at Silentnight’s mid to higher-end models rather than the cheapest options in the range. Silentnight has been making mattresses in the UK for decades and that experience shows in the build quality, consistency and sensible design choices. From my experience - and from wider Mumsnet user feedback - Silentnight mattresses tend to reward spending a bit more.

The more premium models, like this UltraGel Miracoil Pillowtop, feel noticeably better made, more supportive and more comfortable over time than entry-level options. Add in the 60-night sleep guarantee and a five-year warranty and it feels like a relatively low-risk investment for something that has a direct impact on how well you sleep every night.

Final verdict

After seven months of nightly use, the Silentnight UltraGel Miracoil Pillowtop Mattress has proven itself to be a lovely upgrade and one we’d be happy to stick with long term. It strikes a reassuring balance between comfort and support, offering a cushioned, welcoming surface without drifting into the saggy territory that some pillowtop mattresses fall into.

For us, the biggest wins have been the reduction in partner disturbance and the improvement in temperature regulation. In a warm dormer bedroom with a hot sleeper, that’s no small thing. Sleep feels less disrupted, complaints about overheating have dropped away, and the mattress still feels supportive and comfortable at the end of a long day.

It’s not one of the cheapest options on the market and it does ask a little of you in return, namely rotating it regularly and investing in deep fitted sheets. But in exchange, you get a well-made, supportive mattress that’s held its shape, coped well with daily family life and delivered noticeably better sleep over time.

If you’re looking for a medium/firm mattress with a touch of luxury, that works well for couples and doesn’t crumble under real-life use, this one is well worth considering.

🔎 About the testers

This mattress was tested by me, Rebecca Roberts, and my husband David in our family home over a seven-month period. Testing took place in a super king bed in a warm dormer bedroom, with nightly use by the two of us and the often nightly appearance of two small dogs and occasional child. David sleeps hot and is easily disturbed by movement, while I tend to run cold and move around during the night, making this a useful test of comfort, temperature regulation and partner disturbance.
