Our verdict

The Otty Aura Hybrid is one of those mattresses that doesn’t feel particularly flashy, but quietly sorts out the things that actually matter. It’s supportive, comfortable and noticeably cooler than memory foam. It’s also a bit firmer than you might expect, which in this case works in its favour.

There are a few niggles, mainly around edge support and day-to-day practicality, but overall it’s a well-balanced mattress that feels like a proper upgrade rather than just a change.

How we’ve tested the Otty Aura Hybrid Mattress

Matt, who, without revealing too much about his age, falls into the 35 to 44 year old bracket. He and his DW slept on the double Otty Aura Hybrid Mattress for 30 days in a busy household with two children aged six and ten.

He shares the bed with his partner, sleeps in a mix of positions and experiences both back and neck pain. His previous mattress was a memory foam model that had started to sag and sleep hot, which is often the point people start looking into the best mattresses as a proper replacement rather than a quick fix.

Otty Aura Hybrid Mattress: what’s in the box?

The Otty Aura arrives vacuum-packed and rolled in a box, which is now fairly standard but still feels slightly miraculous the first time you see it. There’s no complicated setup or extra parts. You simply unbox it, unroll it and let it expand.

Like all Otty mattresses, the Aura Hybrid turns up neatly packaged for easy lifting

First impressions of the Otty Aura Hybrid Mattress

The first thing that struck Matt wasn’t the packaging or the finish. It was the feel:

"How firm it was! It's advertised as being a medium mattress, but it's firmer than I expected. That's great for me! Whilst it's firm, it's also very comfortable."

That slightly firmer-than-advertised feel is worth flagging early. If you’re expecting something soft and sinky, this isn’t it, and those who prefer something sturdier might usually gravitate towards the best firm mattresses instead.

In terms of quality, his reaction was broadly positive: "The materials feel great. The finish is also good."

He rated it four out of five overall and described it as “substantial and well made”, adding: "Probably not extremely premium, but certainly good and above average."

The only small gripe at this stage was the cover: "The only criticism I'd have is that the top cover isn't quite as tight as I'd like it to be and does have some creasing."

How easy was it to setup

Happily, this is one of the easier parts of the experience. Matt found it “very easy” to set up, with “clear and helpful” instructions. It expands quickly and doesn’t require much thought, which is exactly what you want when you’re dealing with something this bulky.

One pleasant surprise was the lack of that telltale chemical smell you sometimes get with foam mattresses: "I didn't notice any chemical smell at all."

Matt shared that setup was easy, with no off-gassing after opening

How does the Otty Aura Hybrid Mattress feel to sleep on?

This is where the Otty Aura really earns its keep. Matt described it as: "extremely comfortable. It's firm enough for support, but soft enough to feel cosy."

That balance is the key selling point here. Hybrid designs like this, which combine foam and springs, are increasingly popular and feature heavily in our guide to the best hybrid mattresses.

It doesn’t swallow you up like some memory foam mattresses, but it doesn’t feel hard or uninviting either.

He explained the difference clearly: "The pocket springs give it a much more stable, "on top of the mattress" feel rather than sinking in."

That “on top” feeling is something you’ll either immediately appreciate or need a night or two to adjust to, especially if you’re coming from foam.

Over time, that structure seems to pay off. "My back seems to be getting better. I also have noticed that my neck isn't as stiff." If that’s a priority, it’s worth comparing with the best mattresses for back pain too.

After 30 days, there was no change in performance either, with Matt sharing “no change” when asked. Which, for a mattress, is exactly what you want to hear.

Is the Otty Aura Hybrid Mattress good for couples?

If you share a bed, movement matters more than you think. Matt found that the mattress handled this well: "It's also good at reducing movement when the other person rolls over."

When asked more directly, he said he could feel movement “hardly at all”, and that sleep disturbance had “slightly improved” compared to his previous mattress.

So while it’s not completely still, it does a good job of stopping every toss and turn from becoming a shared experience.

Unlike the Otty Original Hybrid, the Aura lacks the Otty brand and detailing in the top layer

Does the Otty Aura Hybrid Mattress regulate your temperature?

This was a big improvement compared to Matt’s previous setup. His old mattress was, in his words, “extremely hot”.

The Otty Aura, though, performed well. He described it simply as “cool” and said he has “never” woken up overheated. If overheating is your main issue, it’s worth comparing options in our guide to the best cooling mattresses.

How’s the edge support?

This is where things dip slightly, quite literally. Matt was very clear about the issue: "If you're on the very edge of the mattress then it dips down towards the outside and it's easy to fall off if you're not being too careful!"

It’s not a problem if you sleep more centrally, but if you tend to perch on the edge or spread out, you’ll notice it.

How does it perform for different sleep positions?

As a combination sleeper, Matt put the mattress through a fair test. He rated comfort in his usual position four out of five and described the firmness as: "Just right." Support was also consistent, with his feedback stating that he was “well supported."

If you’re more of a dedicated side sleeper, you might want to compare with the best mattresses for side sleepers.

Otty Aura Hybrid Mattress design: the good and slightly annoying

In day-to-day use, the mattress is mostly straightforward. Matt liked the removable cover: "I like that the top cover can be removed for washing." Even so, pairing it with a mattress protector is still a sensible move.

It’s one of those features that sounds minor until you need it, especially with children around.

However, there’s one omission that quickly became noticeable: "Our old mattress had handles (one near each corner) that you could use to lift it up when making the bed which made it really easy. This one doesn't, which makes it harder."

And his suggestion is fair: "Otty should consider adding handles at each corner."

Who is this mattress best for? Who should avoid it?

Matt described it as: "a good, all round mattress that would suit most people."

It’s particularly suited to those who want something supportive, slightly firmer, and cooler than traditional foam, especially if you’re comparing options in the best budget mattresses category.

It’s less ideal if you’re after extremes. "Anyone looking for an extremely firm, or extremely soft mattress. It's right down the middle (leaning towards more firm)."

Is it of good value? Worth the money?

This is where the Otty Aura feels especially convincing. Matt said: "It's cheaper than some of its competitors and feels like better quality than the others that I've seen."

He also noted: "It's reasonably priced and seems to deliver a better quality than I was expecting."

And crucially: "Yes. It's fairly cheap for a mattress but it feels like it's very good quality." He confirmed he would buy it at full price, which is often the clearest endorsement.

Final verdict: is it the right mattress for you?

The Otty Aura Hybrid Mattress doesn’t try to be everything. It focuses on doing a few key things well, and for the most part, it succeeds.

It’s comfortable, supportive and cooler than many alternatives. It’s also held up well over a full month of testing, with no noticeable dip in performance.

There are a couple of drawbacks. Edge support isn’t the strongest, and the lack of handles is a small but persistent annoyance. But neither feels like a dealbreaker.

If you’re coming from a sagging or overly warm mattress, the difference is likely to feel quite stark. As Matt put it: "The biggest difference with this mattress is the support and temperature regulation." And ultimately, that’s what most of us are after.
