Our verdict
There are few purchases that feel quite as high stakes as a mattress. You don’t think about it much day to day, until you’re lying awake at 3am wondering why your hip hurts or why you’re somehow both freezing and sweaty at the same time, even with the best duvet for your sleep style thrown into the mix.
And then there’s the opposite experience. The one where you get into bed and think, oh. This is nice. This is very nice.
That’s the space Loaf is aiming for with the Top Dog mattress. It’s pitched as the sort of bed you’d expect to find in a good hotel, the kind where you briefly consider Googling the brand before checkout.
But at well over £1,000, it’s not an impulse buy. And when you’re spending that sort of money, you don’t just want it to feel good on night one. You want it to slot into real life. Children climbing in, partners shifting around, the slow wear that comes from actually using something every day.
So, is this one worth it?
In short: It’s a comfortable, hotel-style mattress that feels luxurious from the outset, with a few practical drawbacks to consider before investing.
Full verdict: The Top Dog makes a strong first impression. It’s deep, soft on the surface but supportive underneath, and has that slightly indulgent feel you associate with higher-end beds.
Rachel took to it quickly. She described it as “super comfortable” and said it “definitely feels like a premium product”. More tellingly, she said, “I genuinely look forward to sinking into it each night,” which is about as good an endorsement as you can get after a long day.
