What Mumsnet users say

My verdict

In short: The Emma Original Pro Mattress is a high-quality hybrid that really delivers on its promises, but it takes a little patience. After the two-month break-in period, it transforms into a wonderfully comfortable, supportive mattress with great cooling technology and fantastic motion isolation.

Full verdict:

This mattress definitely earns its five stars, though it asks for a bit of trust upfront. In the first few weeks, it felt fairly firm, which caused some discomfort for Poppy. However, as Emma mentions on their site, this is part of the “break-in process”.

Over the course of two months, the memory foam layer softened and adapted to her and her partner’s sleeping positions, ultimately becoming what Poppy describes as "the most comfortable, supportive mattress I've ever slept on."

One of the standout features is the cooling technology. The graphite-infused ThermoSync foam regulates temperature beautifully without compromising on the cosy comfort you want. For anyone who's struggled with overheating on traditional memory foam, this hybrid design is a game changer - combining the contouring support of memory foam with the breathability of pocket springs.

The mattress also does a brilliant job at isolating motion, making it an ideal choice for couples. Poppy found that there was barely any disturbance when either she or her partner moved around at night. The edge-to-edge spring system provides consistent support all the way to the mattress borders and the overall build quality is impressive.

That said, the break-in period and the price are the two main factors to keep in mind. At £919 for a king, this mattress is at the premium end of the market, though it's still more affordable than some competitors like Bensons iGel. The weight (requiring two people to move) and the slight chemical smell when first unboxed are minor issues and the lack of paper setup instructions might be frustrating for some, though the QR code system is pretty easy to use.

With a generous 200-night trial and 10-year guarantee, Emma backs their product with confidence. If you’re a side sleeper who needs proper support, someone who gets too hot at night, or a couple seeking motion isolation, the Emma Original Pro Mattress is definitely worth the investment.

How we’ve tested the Emma Original Pro Mattress

Poppy has been testing the Emma Original Pro Mattress (previously known as the Emma Hybrid ThermoSync Mattress) since late September. The mattress was used nightly in her UK bedroom, with testing done under real-world conditions.

She evaluated the mattress based on eight key criteria: performance, quality, durability, ease of use, value for money, comfort and support, temperature regulation and motion isolation. Each category was scored independently, with special attention given to how the mattress performed over time rather than just initial impressions.

Poppy is a side sleeper and shared the bed with a partner, so she was able to assess comfort and motion transfer, along with temperature regulation as autumn temperatures dropped. The mattress’s break-in process was closely monitored, with regular assessments of firmness, comfort and any aches or pains.

The mattress was rotated monthly as per manufacturer instructions and the removable cover was checked for durability. Setup and practical considerations like weight and maneuverability were also factored into the review.

By testing the mattress over an extended period, Poppy was able to evaluate whether it maintained its qualities over time - something that’s impossible to determine with a single night’s sleep or in a showroom.

Does the Emma Original Pro Mattress perform?

Emma’s website clearly mentions that the mattress needs a break-in period and Poppy’s experience confirmed just how important this phase is.

"The mattress took a little while to soften up, which the website clearly states - gradually, over the course of two months' testing, it's softened into the most supremely comfortable, supportive mattress I've ever slept on," Poppy says. "It regulates my temperature well, too - and there's a remarkable lack of movement when one of us gets up at night."

Making the switch from Poppy’s previous setup - a Panda bamboo topper on an IKEA sprung mattress - highlighted the mattress's adjustment period."Before this mattress, I had a Panda bamboo mattress topper on an IKEA sprung mattress and at first I missed the softness and support of the well worn-in memory foam topper.

“However, once I'd slept in the Emma for a few weeks, the memory foam layer softened and adapted to my sleeping position - now I know I can rely on the mattress to give me a good night's sleep and I don't ever wake up with aches and pains like I did the first few nights."

Rather than losing its appeal over time, Poppy found the mattress actually got better. "It's improved with age - it took a few weeks for the cooling properties and memory foam to properly 'kick in', but now they have, it promises a consistently good night's sleep," she adds. This gradual improvement is something to keep in mind if you’re someone who expects instant comfort right out of the box.

Is the Emma Original Pro Mattress durable?

Poppy was really impressed by the construction quality of the Emma Original Pro Mattress. The attention to detail is clear in every aspect, from the solid edge support to the durable fabric cover.

She particularly raves about the build: "Really well made. The edges are firm and hold their shape, there's no sagging and the fabric cover is tough and durable, yet soft. My dog, in his wisdom, likes to dig the mattress while I'm changing the sheets and he hasn't left a scratch on the Emma's removable fabric cover. Inside, you can feel the strength of the springs and the quality of the memory foam."

As a newcomer to hybrid mattresses, Poppy found the construction really stood out: "This is my first hybrid mattress and I'm really impressed. It's got great structural integrity and is soft enough to melt into at the end of a long day, yet still feels supportive. I really don't get along with memory foam mattresses, but this one offers the best of both worlds - plus cooling technology that keeps air flowing and manages to be both cool and cosy."

The mattress also balances aesthetics and functionality. "It has a minimalist design – a dark charcoal and white removable fabric cover with minimal branding. The Emma website recommends rotating it every month for the first six months, then every three months after that. It shouldn't be flipped as it's single-sided. There are sturdy fabric handles on each side to help with this," she says.

When asked about the mattress's long-term durability, Poppy’s answer was clear: "Yes, I do." The high-quality materials and careful construction suggest this mattress is built to last for years of nightly use. However, it's worth noting that some Mumsnet users have reported durability issues after one to three years of use.

How easy is it to unbox and setup the Emma Original Pro Mattress mattress?

The Emma Original Pro Mattress arrives in the now-familiar bed-in-a-box format. While the process is generally straightforward, there are a few practical considerations to keep in mind when setting it up. It’s best to have a plan and an extra pair of hands.

Poppy’s setup experience highlights the key logistics: "The Emma ThermoSync arrived in a box for easy transport - it was pretty heavy and I needed help getting it up the stairs and into my bedroom. Don't try and unpack it in a different room, as it springs quite dramatically out of the box and starts 'inflating' straight away. It takes at least 24 hours to fully inflate, which can cause a conundrum if you take advantage of their old mattress removal service. We took our old mattress to the tip ourselves, so it was easy enough to prop the Emma up until 24 hours had passed and sleep on our old mattress in the meantime."

The instructions are provided via QR code rather than traditional paper format. "The instructions were via a QR code, I would have preferred a paper copy in the box, but I understand the QR code is a more sustainable option. There isn't much to do in order to set the mattress up, other than wait 24 hours," Poppy notes. While eco-friendly, this might frustrate those without smartphone access or those who simply prefer physical instructions.

The break-in period extends beyond just the initial inflation. "I was a little apprehensive at first, as the memory foam layer and cooling technology took a while to soften up. Gradually, it's become more and more comfortable," Poppy explains. For side sleepers specifically, she adds: "I'm a side sleeper and have no complaints" once the mattress is fully adjusted.

Is the Emma Original Pro Mattress good value for money?

At £919 for a king size, the Emma Original Pro Mattress sits firmly in the premium category of hybrid mattresses. So, is it worth the investment?

Poppy believes it is: "Yes - this feels like a premium mattress and £999 feels like a fair price." The quality of the materials, the build and the overall performance definitely match what you’d expect for this price point.

When comparing it to similar mattresses, Poppy thinks context matters. "It's on the expensive side for hybrids, but its cooling technology sets it apart - it's a lot cheaper than the Bensons iGel, for example," she observes. The graphite-infused ThermoSync foam and seven-zone pocket spring system are features that justify the higher price tag, offering a real technological advantage.

Her final assessment is clear: "Yes, this is a high quality mattress providing amazing comfort and support." And with the 200-night trial period and a 10-year guarantee, the value proposition becomes even stronger. "You're essentially removing the risk of making an expensive mistake," Poppy adds. For those who need the specific benefits this mattress offers (temperature regulation, motion isolation and support for side sleepers), the premium price is definitely worth it for better sleep quality.

How comfortable is the Emma Original Pro Mattress?

Comfort is where the Emma Original Pro truly excels - but only once you’ve given it time to adjust. The break-in period is real and understanding this process is key to managing expectations.

Once the memory foam has adapted, the comfort level is outstanding. "Yes, now the memory foam has softened, it feels incredibly comfortable to lie on," Poppy confirms. This isn’t just about general comfort - it’s about waking up feeling rested and pain-free.

The first few nights, however, were a different story. "The first few nights I did, but after that it got incrementally more comfortable every night. Now I never wake up with aches and pains," Poppy explains when asked about waking up with stiffness or discomfort. The mattress gradually improves over time, with each night offering a little more comfort as the memory foam adjusts to your body.

The Original Pro strikes the perfect balance of firmness and softness. "Yes, it's just the right balance between softness, supportiveness and firmness," Poppy says. This balance is especially important for side sleepers, as you need enough softness for pressure relief on your hips and shoulders, but enough support to maintain proper spinal alignment. The seven-zone pocket spring system targets support exactly where it’s needed, while the memory foam layer offers contouring comfort without the feeling of being engulfed by the mattress.

Is the Emma Original Pro Mattress mattress good at regulating temperature?

Temperature regulation is one of the Emma Original Pro’s standout features, thanks to the graphite-infused ThermoSync foam designed to address the heat retention issues that can plague traditional memory foam mattresses.

Poppy’s experience with the cooling technology has been positive: "Not with this mattress, it's actually improved this a lot. Although, it's worth noting I tested it from late September to late November, so the nights were getting cooler too," she reports when asked about waking up hot or overheated. While the autumn results are promising, we can't fully assess its summer performance based on Poppy's test period.

The mattress maintains a comfortable sleeping temperature all night long. "It feels pleasantly cool to the touch," Poppy notes. This coolness isn’t just a surface feature—the hybrid construction allows air to circulate through the pocket springs, preventing the heat buildup that typically occurs with all-foam mattresses.

When asked about year-round comfort, Poppy is honest about the limits of her testing: "I've only tested it in autumn, so can't comment on this." If you're a hot sleeper concerned about the summer months, Poppy recommends taking advantage of Emma’s 200-night trial to test the mattress in warmer weather. It’s also worth mentioning that some Mumsnet users have reported overheating despite the cooling features, which suggests that temperature sensitivity varies from person to person.

Is there motion isolation with the Emma Original Pro mattress?

For couples, motion isolation is a crucial factor. The Emma Original Pro excels in this area, combining the motion-dampening properties of memory foam with the individualised support provided by pocket springs.

Poppy’s experience speaks for itself: "Not at all." When asked if she feels her partner's movements, she has no complaints. This level of motion isolation is especially impressive considering the hybrid construction - spring mattresses typically transfer more motion than all-foam designs.

The lack of disturbance extends to all types of movement. "Yes, it doesn't disturb me when my partner gets up or shifts around," Poppy confirms when asked about sleeping undisturbed by a restless partner. Whether it’s middle-of-the-night bathroom trips, changing sleep positions, or early morning wake-ups due to different schedules, the mattress absorbs motion effectively.

Even edge-of-bed movements, which usually cause the most disturbance on hybrid mattresses, are well-controlled. "No," Poppy states simply when asked if the mattress bounces or shakes when someone sits on the edge. This makes the Emma Original Pro a great choice for light sleepers, couples with different sleep schedules, or anyone who’s struggled with partner disturbance on spring mattresses.

Any health and safety concerns with Emma’s Original Pro?

Health and safety considerations are minimal with the Emma Original Pro, though there are a few points worth mentioning for those with sensitivities.

The most common concern with compressed mattresses is off-gassing. "It did have a distinct chemical smell for about a day and a half after opening. It vanished completely after that though," Poppy reports. This is typical for bed-in-a-box mattresses and the smell dissipates quickly. If you have chemical sensitivities, it might be worth letting the mattress air out for a couple of days before regular use.

During her two-month testing period, Poppy didn’t experience any health issues. "No," she confirms when asked about any increased allergies or respiratory problems. The mattress performed without causing any adverse reactions.

As for safety certifications and materials transparency, there’s some limited information available. "The website says the fabric cover is gentle on skin, but it doesn't say anything else on this topic," Poppy notes. While Emma highlights the skin-friendly properties of the cover, there isn’t much detail about materials certifications or testing standards. If you’re after specific certifications, Poppy suggests contacting Emma directly before purchasing.

Emma Original Pro mattress review, final verdict

The Emma Original Pro delivers on its promises of comfort, cooling and support - but requires patience. After a two-month break-in period, it transforms into an exceptionally comfortable mattress that excels at temperature regulation and motion isolation. The premium construction, 200-night trial and 10-year guarantee provide peace of mind for the £999 investment.

This mattress is ideal for side sleepers, hot sleepers seeking better temperature regulation and couples needing motion isolation. However, those wanting immediate out-of-the-box comfort or working with a tighter budget may want to consider other options.

Despite mixed reviews from some Mumsnet users regarding long-term durability and customer service, our testing experience confirms the Emma Original Pro as a high-quality hybrid mattress that justifies its premium price point for the right sleeper.

What do people say about the mattress?

Despite Poppy’s five-star rating, Mumsnet users share mixed experiences with Emma mattresses, including the Original Pro model.

According to data analysed by mumsGPT from December 2024 to December 2025, while many praise the brand’s trial period, initial comfort and support - particularly for back pain - others report issues with temperature, durability and the brand’s customer service.

This mix of opinions is clear from sites like Argos, where common complaints in the reviews section of the mattress include overheating (despite cooling claims), durability issues after one to three years and variable customer service experiences from Emma directly.

What's the best Emma mattress?

The "best" Emma mattress depends on your needs. The Original Pro excels at temperature regulation and suits side sleepers, while the original memory foam version offers firmer support preferred by some back sleepers.

The Hybrid Premium provides the most advanced features, while the Hybrid Original offers better value. Consider your sleeping style, temperature preferences and budget when choosing.

Are Emma mattresses worth it?

Based on Poppy’s testing, yes - if you're willing to wait through the break-in period and the features align with your needs. The quality construction, cooling technology, motion isolation and generous trial period provide good value at the premium price point.

However, take advantage of the 200-night trial to ensure the specific model works for you, as individual experiences vary.

Is there an Emma super king mattress?

Yes, the Emma Original Pro is available in UK Super King size (180 x 200 cm), along with Single, Small Double, Double and King sizes.

What is a ThermoSync mattress?

ThermoSync refers to Emma's temperature-regulating technology featuring graphite-infused foam in the top layer.

The graphite works to disperse heat away from the body, while the hybrid construction (memory foam plus pocket springs) allows for better airflow compared to traditional all-foam mattresses. This combination aims to keep sleepers cool throughout the night while maintaining the contouring comfort of memory foam.
