A view of the Emma Original Pro Mattress mattress from the side
Does the Emma Original Pro Mattress perform?
Emma’s website clearly mentions that the mattress needs a break-in period and Poppy’s experience confirmed just how important this phase is.
"The mattress took a little while to soften up, which the website clearly states - gradually, over the course of two months' testing, it's softened into the most supremely comfortable, supportive mattress I've ever slept on," Poppy says. "It regulates my temperature well, too - and there's a remarkable lack of movement when one of us gets up at night."
Making the switch from Poppy’s previous setup - a Panda bamboo topper on an IKEA sprung mattress - highlighted the mattress's adjustment period."Before this mattress, I had a Panda bamboo mattress topper on an IKEA sprung mattress and at first I missed the softness and support of the well worn-in memory foam topper.
“However, once I'd slept in the Emma for a few weeks, the memory foam layer softened and adapted to my sleeping position - now I know I can rely on the mattress to give me a good night's sleep and I don't ever wake up with aches and pains like I did the first few nights."
Rather than losing its appeal over time, Poppy found the mattress actually got better. "It's improved with age - it took a few weeks for the cooling properties and memory foam to properly 'kick in', but now they have, it promises a consistently good night's sleep," she adds. This gradual improvement is something to keep in mind if you’re someone who expects instant comfort right out of the box.
Is the Emma Original Pro Mattress durable?
Poppy was really impressed by the construction quality of the Emma Original Pro Mattress. The attention to detail is clear in every aspect, from the solid edge support to the durable fabric cover.
She particularly raves about the build: "Really well made. The edges are firm and hold their shape, there's no sagging and the fabric cover is tough and durable, yet soft. My dog, in his wisdom, likes to dig the mattress while I'm changing the sheets and he hasn't left a scratch on the Emma's removable fabric cover. Inside, you can feel the strength of the springs and the quality of the memory foam."
As a newcomer to hybrid mattresses, Poppy found the construction really stood out: "This is my first hybrid mattress and I'm really impressed. It's got great structural integrity and is soft enough to melt into at the end of a long day, yet still feels supportive. I really don't get along with memory foam mattresses, but this one offers the best of both worlds - plus cooling technology that keeps air flowing and manages to be both cool and cosy."
The mattress also balances aesthetics and functionality. "It has a minimalist design – a dark charcoal and white removable fabric cover with minimal branding. The Emma website recommends rotating it every month for the first six months, then every three months after that. It shouldn't be flipped as it's single-sided. There are sturdy fabric handles on each side to help with this," she says.
When asked about the mattress's long-term durability, Poppy’s answer was clear: "Yes, I do." The high-quality materials and careful construction suggest this mattress is built to last for years of nightly use. However, it's worth noting that some Mumsnet users have reported durability issues after one to three years of use.
