What Mumsnet users say

Our verdict

There are few things that make you feel more grown-up than caring deeply about a mattress. In your twenties, you could sleep anywhere. Sofa. Floor. Friend’s spare room with one mysterious pillow. Add work, children, school runs, twin toddlers and a partner who turns over like a rotisserie chicken, and suddenly a decent mattress stops feeling like a treat and starts feeling like basic survival.

For our tester Rebecca, the Emma Original Elite landed in a house where sleep already had enough working against it. She’s a working parent of three, with one six-year-old and two-year-old twins. She shares her bed with her partner, sleeps in a warm bedroom and describes herself as a combination sleeper.

Her previous mattress had also seen better days. As Rebecca put it, “Our old mattress was very old, hard, and uncomfortable. We could feel the springs through it, which made it difficult to get a comfortable night’s sleep.”

The Emma Original Elite is one of Emma’s more premium mattresses, with seven layers including AirGrid technology, foam comfort layers and a pocket-spring core. It’s designed to offer pressure relief, support and better breathability than a traditional foam-heavy mattress. All good on paper, but the real test is whether that still holds up in a normal family bedroom, not just on a glossy product page.

In Rebecca’s home, it was a clear upgrade. It felt comfortable straight away, gave strong support for side and front sleeping, stayed neutral during warmer nights and cut down sleep disturbance compared with their old mattress.

How the Emma Original Elite Mattress is delivered

Famed for their bed-in-a-box delivery, Emma’s branding is recognisable

It also made a strong first impression. Rebecca rated the quality 5 out of 5, praising the finish, quilting and overall build. She said, “The mattress looks and feels excellent quality. The quilting gives it a premium finish, and the branding is clear and well presented. Overall, it feels very well made and looks great in the bedroom.”

More importantly, it did the job overnight. Rebecca found it comfortable from the first night, with no awkward bedding-in period. She said, “What surprised me most was how comfortable it felt straight away. I was expecting it to take some time to adjust to a new mattress, but we both slept well from the start. I was also pleasantly surprised by how well it performed during the recent warm weather, as I would normally wake up feeling too hot.”

That temperature point is worth paying attention to. Rebecca’s bedroom tends to be warm, and she tested the mattress during recent summer heat. She didn’t find it icy-cool, and nobody should expect a mattress to work miracles if the room is boiling and a small child climbs in at 4am. But she did find it stayed comfortable and didn’t leave her waking up overheated.

It also did well for bed-sharing. Some hybrid mattresses can feel a bit lively, but Rebecca said she could feel her partner moving “Hardly at all”, and that sleep disturbance was “Significantly improved” compared with their previous mattress.

There are a few things to know. Rebecca noticed a slight smell when the mattress was first unpacked, though it disappeared quickly. She also said it has some weight to it, which matters if you’ll need to rotate it or move it around often. And if you prefer a very firm mattress, this probably isn’t the one for you. Rebecca felt it offered cushioning and support rather than a hard feel.

Overall, the Emma Original Elite did exactly what Rebecca needed it to do. It replaced an old, uncomfortable mattress with something supportive, comfortable and much better made. In a busy family home where sleep is already precious, that counts for a lot.

How we’ve tested the Emma Original Elite mattress

The Emma Original Elite mattress was tested over a 30-day period by Rebecca, a working parent aged 35 to 44. She lives with her husband and three children: one six-year-old and twins aged two.

Rebecca shares her bed with her partner and describes herself as a combination sleeper. Her home and bedroom are both warm, so temperature regulation was an important part of testing.

She tested the king size Emma Original Elite mattress at home, assessing comfort, support, temperature regulation, motion isolation, setup, practicality, quality and value for money.

Does the Emma Original Elite mattress perform well?

Yes. Rebecca’s experience was consistently positive across the 30-day test. She found the mattress comfortable and supportive from the start, and performance didn’t drop off over time.

Asked whether it delivered on Emma’s claims around support, cooling and pressure relief, Rebecca said, “Yes, the mattress has definitely delivered on its claims. The level of support is excellent and we’ve noticed a significant improvement in comfort compared to our previous mattress. It provides great pressure relief, helping us feel properly supported throughout the night without any uncomfortable pressure points.

“Despite the recent summer heat, we’ve also found it remains comfortable to sleep on and doesn’t feel overly warm. Overall, we’ve been very pleased with the quality of sleep we’re getting and are waking up feeling more rested.”

That’s a strong result, especially given what it replaced. Rebecca and her partner were moving on from an old mattress that was hard, uncomfortable and springy in all the wrong ways. The Emma Original Elite felt like a real step up.

In everyday use, she said, “The mattress has been consistently comfortable and supportive [...] As side and front sleepers, we’ve both found it works well for our preferred sleeping positions, providing a good balance of softness and support throughout the night.”

When asked whether performance changed during testing, Rebecca answered, “No change.” That’s what you want from a mattress trial. No sagging, no softening and no creeping suspicion that the first night was a fluke.

Close up details of the sides of the Emma Original Elite Mattress

The cover is removable and can be machine washed for easy care

Is the Emma Original Elite mattress durable?

Rebecca’s first impressions of durability were very positive. The quilting, stitching and fabric all helped the mattress feel premium, not just expensive.

She said, “Yes, the mattress feels very well made and durable. The stitching is neat and robust, and the quality of the materials is evident throughout. Everything from the fabric to the finishing details feels premium and built to last, giving us confidence that it will maintain its comfort and support over time.”

Over 30 days, she didn’t notice any dips, changes in support or loss of comfort. Of course, a month can’t tell us how it’ll cope after five years of bedtimes, duvet days, children climbing in and the occasional bouncing incident everyone pretends not to have seen. But during the short-term test, it held up well.

The removable cover is also a practical plus. Rebecca hadn’t needed to wash it during testing, but liked having the option: “The design feels very practical. We haven’t needed to remove the cover for washing yet, but I really like that this is an option as it makes maintenance much easier.

“We also haven’t had to move the mattress since it was installed, but the handles are a great feature and should make repositioning it much easier when needed. The mattress is substantial and feels like it has some weight to it, but that seems to come with the high-quality materials and comfort levels.

“I think reducing the weight would likely mean compromising on the quality and support, so it’s a trade-off that makes sense.”

That weight is worth bearing in mind. It feels substantial, which Rebecca saw as part of the quality, but you’re unlikely to want to drag it around on your own.

How easy is it to unbox and set up?

This was one of the strongest practical points for Rebecca. The Emma Original Elite arrives vacuum packed, which makes it much easier to get upstairs and into position than a full-size mattress.

Rebecca said setup was “Very easy”, and that the instructions were “Very clear and comprehensive.”

She was particularly impressed by the delivery format: “The vacuum-packed delivery system was excellent. It made getting the mattress upstairs and into the room really easy, and the unpacking process was simple and hassle-free. It’s a very well-designed feature that made setup much more convenient.”

Anyone who has ever tried to pivot a king size mattress around a narrow landing will see the appeal. Vacuum-packed mattresses do come with the usual wait for expansion and, sometimes, a new-mattress smell. Rebecca noticed a slight smell at first, but it didn’t hang around.

She said, “There was a slight smell when the mattress was first unpacked, but it disappeared quickly and wasn’t an issue. It didn’t last long enough to impact our comfort or sleep.”

Carrying the Emma Original Elite Mattress to the right place

Carrying the mattress to its final destination is easy enough thanks to its compact packaging

Is the Emma Original Elite mattress good value for money?

Rebecca felt it was. The Emma Original Elite isn’t the cheapest mattress around, but it isn’t in the handmade luxury bracket either. It sits in that middle ground where you still very much want it to justify itself.

For Rebecca, it did. She said, “Yes, I feel the mattress offers good value for money. While it isn’t the cheapest option on the market, it also isn’t at the very top end of the price range. The level of comfort, support, quality of materials, and overall sleep experience make it feel well worth the investment.

“Given how much time we spend in bed and the improvement we’ve noticed in our sleep quality, I think it represents excellent value.”

Asked whether she would buy it at full price, she said, “Yes, I would. It’s comfortable, supportive, and feels very high quality. Given the overall performance and reasonable price point, I think it’s well worth the cost.”

That said, mattress pricing can be slippery. Emma often runs discounts and bundle offers, so check the live price before buying rather than assuming the RRP is what you’ll pay.

How comfortable is the Emma Original Elite mattress?

Comfort was the biggest win. Rebecca rated it 5 out of 5 in her usual sleeping position and said it suited her firmness preferences.

Asked how the firmness felt, she answered, “Just right.” Asked whether she felt properly supported throughout the night, she said, “Extremely well supported.”

This is useful because Rebecca and her partner sleep in different positions. She describes them as side and front sleepers, and both found it comfortable. The mattress gave them a balance of softness and support, rather than feeling too hard or too sinky.

She also said, “It’s one of the most comfortable mattresses we’ve tried. It provides an excellent balance of comfort and support and feels higher quality than many other mattresses we’ve owned.”

Rebecca didn’t report an improvement in aches or stiffness, but that’s because she wasn’t dealing with regular pain before testing. She explained, “Not applicable. We didn’t experience regular aches, stiffness, or pain with our previous mattress, so we haven’t noticed any changes in that respect. However, the new mattress is noticeably more comfortable overall.”

That’s an important distinction. This isn’t being presented as a mattress that fixes back pain. Rebecca’s experience was simpler and more useful: it was much more comfortable than the old mattress it replaced.

Looking down on the Emma Original Elite Mattress

Rebecca shared that the new mattress is “noticeably more comfortable overall”

Does it regulate temperature well?

Yes, based on Rebecca’s test. This was one of the areas where the Emma Original Elite did particularly well.

Rebecca’s home and bedroom are warm, and she tested the mattress during recent warmer nights. She normally wakes up feeling too warm in hot weather, but that didn’t happen during the trial.

Asked whether she had woken feeling overheated or sweaty since using it, she said, “Never.” Asked whether it felt cool, neutral or warm, she said, “Neutral.”

Her fuller answer was, “Yes. I would normally wake up during hot weather feeling too warm, but I haven’t experienced that with this mattress. It has stayed comfortable during the recent warmer nights and has helped improve my sleep quality.”

This doesn’t mean the mattress will chill your bedroom or solve every hot-sleeping problem. A mattress can only do so much when the weather is close, the duvet is wrong or there’s a child starfished across your pillow. But Rebecca found it comfortable in a warm room and didn’t wake up sweaty during the test.

She also said it felt suitable year-round: “Yes, definitely.”

Is there motion isolation with this mattress?

Rebecca’s experience here was very positive. She shares her bed with her partner and found that the Emma Original Elite reduced sleep disturbance compared with their old mattress.

Asked whether she could feel movement when her partner moved or got out of bed, Rebecca said, “Hardly at all.”

Asked whether this improved or worsened sleep disturbance compared with her previous mattress, she said, “Significantly improved.”

She also described the mattress as “Very stable” when someone moved or sat on the edge.

That’s reassuring for bed-sharers, especially if one person moves around more than the other. Some hybrid mattresses can feel bouncy, but Rebecca didn’t find this disruptive. In her test, the mattress felt stable and partner movement was barely noticeable.

The depth of the Emma Original Elite Mattress

At 27cm deep, the Emma Original Elite Mattress  provides plenty of comfort and support

Do you need a mattress topper with this mattress?

Rebecca didn’t use or mention needing a mattress topper during testing. The mattress was comfortable enough on its own.

Given that she rated comfort 5 out of 5 and said it felt “Just right”, there’s no obvious need to add a topper unless you prefer a much softer or more cushioned sleep surface.

Are there any health and safety concerns?

None came up during Rebecca’s test. She reported no allergies, irritation or breathing issues, answering, “No issues.”

She also said she felt confident in the safety and materials used: “Yes. The mattress feels well made and made from quality materials, and we've had no concerns or reasons to question its safety.”

There was a slight smell after unpacking, but Rebecca said it disappeared quickly and didn’t affect comfort or sleep.

Who is this best suited for? Who should avoid it?

Rebecca thinks the Emma Original Elite would suit a broad range of sleepers, especially people upgrading from an old mattress who want better comfort and support.

Her answer was, “I think this mattress would suit a wide range of sleepers, particularly those looking for a good balance of comfort and support. As both side and front sleepers, we’ve found it works really well for us. It would also suit anyone looking to upgrade from an older mattress and improve their overall sleep comfort.”

Based on her experience, this mattress is likely to suit:

  • Side and combination sleepers

  • Bed-sharers who want less partner disturbance

  • Warm sleepers who want a mattress that feels neutral

  • Families upgrading from an old or uncomfortable mattress

  • Anyone who wants support without an extremely firm feel

It may be less suitable for:

  • People who prefer a very firm mattress

  • Anyone who wants a very soft, sink-in feel

  • Those who need an ultra-light mattress to move regularly

  • Shoppers looking for the cheapest possible option

Rebecca’s main caveat was firmness preference. She said, “It may not suit people who prefer an extremely firm mattress, as it offers a comfortable balance of cushioning and support rather than feeling very hard. Other than that, I think it would appeal to most sleepers.”

The Emma Original Elite Mattress made up with bedding on

Despite lacking a bed frame due to an ongoing renovation, Rebecca’s sleep hasn’t been disturbed

Is the Emma Original Elite mattress worth it?

For Rebecca, yes. After 30 days, she would recommend it. Her final verdict was, “Yes, I would recommend this mattress. It offers a great combination of comfort, support, quality, and value for money. We’ve both slept very well on it, it has performed well during warmer weather, and the overall quality and finish have been impressive. Compared to our previous mattress, it has been a significant upgrade, and we’ve been very pleased with our experience from delivery and setup through to everyday use.”

That sums it up nicely. The Emma Original Elite was comfortable straight away, suited Rebecca and her partner’s sleeping positions, stayed neutral during warm nights and reduced disturbance from partner movement. It also felt well made, looked premium and was easy to get upstairs thanks to the vacuum-packed delivery.

The drawbacks are fairly minor: a slight smell on unpacking, a substantial feel once in place and a firmness that won’t suit those who want something very hard. But for Rebecca’s family home, it was a clear and very welcome upgrade.

Final verdict: is this the right mattress for you?

The Emma Original Elite made a very strong case for itself during Rebecca’s 30-day test. It was comfortable from the first night, easy to set up, supportive for both side and front sleeping, and much better than her previous mattress at reducing partner disturbance.

It also did well in warm weather. Rebecca didn’t wake up overheated or sweaty, despite usually feeling too warm during hot nights. That’s a useful result for a mattress tested in a real family bedroom, not a showroom.

It won’t be the right choice for everyone. If you like a properly firm mattress, Rebecca thinks this may not suit you. It’s also fairly substantial once in place, so moving and rotating it may take a bit of effort.

But if you’re replacing an old mattress and want something supportive, cushioned, stable and well made, the Emma Original Elite is easy to recommend. Rebecca summed up the upgrade best: “Overall, it has provided a much better sleeping experience and feels like a worthwhile investment.”
