Claire, your view of women in history is simplistic and inaccurate. Women weren't oppressed because they had the childbearing role. For example, men and women worked alongside each other in textile factories doing exactly the same work but women were paid half of what men were. Their children were also at work, earning the same as them.

As for the race argument. Slavery was abominable and even though it was abolished racism still exists throughout our society. Should we therefore say that because this racism is not as bad as slavery that it is tolerable and should not be challenged?

Inequalities exist throughout our society and some women work to challenge them. If you choose not to, or to ignore them, then that is your perogative. I don't expect you will answer this post, preferring instead to believe that all feminists have something missing in their lives. It would be galling for you to think that we had happy, fulfilling lives yet still wanted to work to make the world a better place for all its citizens.

Its not exactly double standards. I did say that IMO it is also wrong the other way around. I was just offering up a counter arguement to those who say 'oh its fine for the male teacher to ogle women with the boys because if it were the other way around no one would care' Im explaining why people care more about this kind of objectification about women than of men, because the issue of disrimination against women need more active challenging at the point society is currently at..

I reckon someones already said it but just to add my twopennies; for those who have said it would be a different story and no one would mind if it had a been a female teachers oggling a male.. In my opinion that would also be wrong but the reason it is slightly more acceptable is because men have not suffered 100s of years of oppression (objectification, lower pay; I wont list it all) So it would be less damaging IMO if this happened the other way around.

Teachers should be actively challenging sexist views about women not encouraging them.

My daughters school has a 4 page long gender equality policy. I wonder if same sex schools have these. If not, I beleive they should.
