The aim of the group is to bring experts and MSs together to consider the legal and policy framework for women’s and girls’ rights and its implications for devolved policy and practice.

Welsh Conservative MS Natasha Asghar will be chairing the group with Reform’s Cristiana Emsley and Art Wright, Labour’s Mike Hedges and Plaid Cymru’s Safa Elhassan joining as members.

The group’s formation is important more now than ever before following the Supreme Court’s ruling that sex is defined as biological sex only.

....

“Given the Supreme Court’s recent ruling, I hope the group will play a key role in ensuring public bodies are adhering to the law, particularly when it comes to single-sex spaces.”

At the group’s inaugural meeting, members agreed topics to cover including gender distress, barriers facing women and girls in sport, lesbian rights, and the impact of pornography on young people.

Women’s Rights Network Wales and Merched Cymru have agreed to be joint secretariats for the group.

At last. All power to their elbow. Did labour have no women interested? Or am I making gendered assumptions about Mike?

I didn't notice that! https://senedd.wales/people/mike-hedges-ms/

Mike Hedges MS

The Welsh Parliament is the democratically elected body that represents the interests of Wales and its people. Commonly known as the Senedd, it makes laws for Wales, agrees Welsh taxes and holds the Welsh Government to account.

There are only two female Labour MSs, so if neither are available to contribute regularly to the group then I guess they had to look at the males - there are a whole seven of them! This is a great step forward, very pleased to see the Senedd doing this. Mike Hedges is one of my MSs as it goes, so if he steps out of line, don't worry, I am quite prepared to tell him..!

That's even more encouraging with the support networks listed involved as well isn't it?

Good on them!

Cross-Party Groups may be set up by Members of the Senedd in respect of any subject area relevant to the Senedd.

A group must include Members from three political party groups represented within the Senedd. Cross-Party Groups are not formal Senedd groupings and are not, therefore, bound by any of the Senedd's Standing Orders.

They have no formal role in policy development.

Good, it's time to make some noise. 🥳

The best of luck to them, I hope our system is not so broken they will be prevented from making a difference. 👏

I do hope they manage to get the blinkers off, there. I just struggle to believe Gender Ideology is a particularly widely held concept in their various constituencies. I don’t live there anymore, but my old friends don’t appear to be buying into it.

Yes that's standard of cross party groups in any parliament - UK and Scottish too. Instead they influence the policy-making process through a range of informal channels. It's a very standard way of doing things and of course formal committees exist to support the scrutiny and passage of a bill.
