Teenage boy receives referral order after stabbing girl who rejected him

This happened locally to me. A 14 year old girl turned down the advances of a teenage boy who then used fake social media accounts to harass her. When she refused to go out with him, he followed her into a shop and stabbed her repeatedly. He also stabbed the shop owner who tried to intervene.

What did this little pillar of the community get as a punishment, a restraining order and a 12 month referral order. I’m so bloody angry that the safety of women and girls is seen as unimportant and the sentences given to offenders are so pathetic.

The victim impact statement is heartbreaking.

Sorry about the DM link, it’s in my local paper but behind a paywall https://www.dailymail.com/news/article-16150735/Moment-schoolboy-follows-girl-repeatedly-stabs.html

Moment schoolboy follows girl and stabs her in shop

The 14-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, launched the attack in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, on the morning of March 15 after she refused to go on a date with him.

Quite apart from anything else, surely 'repeatedly stabbing' someone is attempted murder? Not to mention GBH on the unfortunate shopkeeper.

To be fair to work, they have always been amazing

They have allowed me to have time to explain what's happened, time to calm down, slung the bloke out and called the police (my manager may be small but she's bloody fierce-shes very supportive)

The problem is,I work alone (sort of) as front of house (the only problem I did have is when I refused to go into the gents alone and they disagreed but I sorted that with colleagues to go inas pairs and the problem sorted itself when a bloke tried to pin me to the wall in there-they had a change of policy because of that)

The problem is the police-they don't give a fuck

I once turned round and said 'you've learned nothing from Sarah everard' and they just laughed

Nothing changes and that is so depressing

They are not scared of other/bigger men/the police/the system/their parents

And these are just the stories that make the papers-a girl was stabbed for fuck sake and nothing happens, just a 'don't do it again'

Every single woman I work with/are friends with has had something happen-i think I read 1 out of 4 women have suffered some sort of harassment

Bollocks-itll be 4 out of 4 of any women over the age of at least 16 (and younger)

Not all men (I have sons and a dp who wouldn't dream of it) but it's always a man

It 1 in 4 that are raped and 9 in 10 who are sexually harassed/assaulted

IANAL but unfortunately I don't think the lenient sentence review will get anywhere.

Because the issue is what CPS decided to charge him with (emphasis added):

>"wounding with intent, inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent and possession of a bladed article in a public place."

The sentencing guidelines follow from the offence; the judge can't decide to go beyond.

It's crazy. How can you repeatedly stab somebody "without intent" to do them serious harm?

Divinedownload · 23/09/2026 20:21

I am so angry about this, footage was horrific. She would have been terrified. What a waste of space….. I doubt the likes of him can even be rehabilitated. 😡

I have skim read and my immediate question is whether all of this support is offered to child victims whether or not they have to give evidence remotely against a violent perpetrator?

'the Probation Service has too few staff, with too little experience, managing too many cases. '

Not really very reassuring.

He will come under the local Youth Offending Team which is different to the adult Probation Service and in a slightly better place than the probation service.. He should have regular meetings with his YOT worker to address his offending behaviour and there are attempts being made to develop approaches to tackle these behaviours.
The statistics though, are shocking....

And Labour want to convince us they take VAWG seriously

it’s beyond a joke

No political party takes it seriously. Tories had 14 years to do something and they did very little.

LordEmsworthsGirlfriend · 23/09/2026 15:53

It's an all of them problem. The only way to fix it would be for women to start acting as a political block and making it clear that locking up rapists and other abusers/refusing to let those found guilty of such into the country is a condition of our votes. Not much prospect of that at the moment but it's the only way anything will ever change.

That's odd, the Sentencing Council describe it as follows
**
How it works: The young person meets with a Youth Offender Panel made up of community volunteers and a Youth Justice/Offending Team (YOT/YJS) worker. 1, 2]
The Contract: Together, they agree on a written contract aimed at repairing harm, addressing the root causes of behaviour, and taking responsibility. 1]
Outcome: Once successfully completed, the conviction becomes "spent," meaning it usually does not need to be declared for jobs or courses. 1]

None of which is 'signing a bit of paper and that's it'.

alcovecupboards · 23/09/2026 15:27

That isn't what a referral order is. It isn't an ASBO. It's a bit more involved in that - and it's absolutely not just what you claim.

But there is no element of punishment. He'll attend a meeting with one youth worker and two amateurs, be told to sign a piece of paper saying he won't do it again, and that's it. He'll be home by tea time, to collect another kitchen knife so he can do it to some other poor child.

And how can attempting to murder someone, stabbing them repeatedly, and then stabbing someone else who tried to protect the victim, not be serious enough? But for the luck of the gods, the boy is a murderer. He needs to be detained for public safety. Except public safety - especially the safety of women & girls - is irrelevant to men like Judge Lawrie.

My point is that if you’re complaining about the sentence you have to be aware of the sentencing guidelines. And you are misrepresenting what a referral order is.

If you are complaining officially, as I understand that you are, then you have to refer to the sentencing guidelines and be clear about in what way the judge wrongly applied them.

I’m not debating the issue with you: I’m pointing out what you have to do if you want to complain that the judge applied the sentencing guidelines wrongly.

Perhaps we should be more Norway. Evidence suggests that removal from toxic family and peer group can be effective at preventing further offending. I imagine that the foster families are very well paid, they’d have to be really.

This is exactly what we should be doing. Unfortunately Norway was smart enough to invest the money it made from oil and gas reserves into a sovereign wealth fund that effectively covers the cost of being a civilised nation. Our Government gave it all the way to profit making companies and we all suffer as a result. But on the point of removing them from their influences - what they also do incredibly well is not allowing the young offenders to spend all their time with other similar offenders and be influenced that way. Which is what we do. We just shove them into a facility, let them bounce off each others and feed into the notion that they're all criminals and will have no other possible future.

Thats good news. I’m sceptical about him getting a sentence that reflects the seriousness of the crime but live in hope.

We need to petition Andy Burnham about this urgently. He posted a virtue signalling 'we need to take violence against women seriously' post. Let's see him put his money where his mouth is.

That is appalling. And sounds like your police force is shocking. Letter to your MP/papers? Try to get things in writing, take notes, write down everything that's happened as best you can remember it, with dates and any other witnesses or evidence to support.

Police forces vary; our local police are amazing when it comes to dv, threats, harassment, etc.

What he needs is an older male to intervene. He needs firm, clear, absolutely crystal clear boundaries. He probably needs help.

Absolutely shocking to hear your story. I'm really sorry to hear about your experiences at work. You know that your employer now has responsibility to protect you from sexual harrassment/abuse?

Police Det Supt said this:

'"What is unusual in this case is that it's a 14-year-old child that has had this obsessive behaviour.
"It's the type of thing we'd see in domestic violence cases with adults, but it's not something we would have normally seen when it comes to child offenders."'

Judge Lawrie appears to have form for sympathising with offenders - a few of his other decisions - the man needs to be looked at by his superiors so here's hoping there will be a backlash on this case.

Judges don't have superiors, really.
