In light of the whole arts world supporting Macklemore over his censorship, who in the music industry supported Róisín Murphy?

To her, I could add who in TV over Linehan, dance over Rosie Kay?
Sure, JKR is too big to be cancelled, but I didn't see any writers flock to her side.
I'm sure I've missed a few.
So, pressure put on Eddie Sheeran to drop Macklemore for his overtly political Free Palestine! chants, banners etc.
Hey, I may not share his politics, but I don't believe in censorship.
But as the wave of support comes in for him, and let's face it, this cancellation can only boost his career, I'm right now asking where was the wave of anti-censorship support for Róisín Murphy a few years back, when <her own record label!> cancelled her?
Macklemore walks into his next gig next week, his artist-activist credentials burnished, his opportunities to boost his career scaled up.
Róisín? She was at existential risk of career collapse.
Rosie Kay? Did the dance community in any meaningful way support her freedom to speak up? Highlight the iniquity of her losing the school shed sweated to build?
Linehan? Well, he really is a salutary lesson in the Age Of Scolding.
I know I've missed a few.
And of course multiples more women in lesser positions, cancelled from running maternity classes, as Green party candidates (I know one personally), from sports teams, etc etc, all of them invaluable in their fields, but cancelled or silenced via threat of cancellation.
So, while I see the Macklemore cancellation as poor in an apparently freedom-valuing West, I know this is in effect arbitrary. He isn't being dropped by his record label, all venues not touching him, activists working to bury him. If he ran a singing school, he wouldn't have it taken from him. If he was a writer for TV, he wouldn't have all opportunities for a decade denied him, true poison pen culture behind his back and to his face.
So I ask, why when Macklemore gets a prime gig cancelled, the whole arts/activist/Omnicause world lifts him up, yet when Róisín/Rosie/Graeme get cancelled, the rest of the mass bear down in them?
Of course, we all know the answer. I'm just finding I need to articulate what I see as a hypocritical world doubling down.

You can't see the difference in Macklemore being literally de-platformed for the expression of his views by the billionaire owners of venues ?

Macklemore has not been de-platformed, On the contrary, this affair is probably the best thing that's happened to his career.

True

I came to this thread because I am an old fart when it comes to music and hadn't heard of Macklemore until the news came on. I googled it and saw what he wore on stage a few years ago. He's an anti Semitic p.o.s for that and I think ed Sheeran trying to remain neutral (as apparently the RSOH folks have been praising the late great Dolly Parton for) was the right thing to do. Shame he has had to grovel. Anyone who hasn't seen it should watch Speechless on BBC iPlayer. This is the type of people that do this sort of batshittery. Go over to the Jewish Mumsnet section to read the threads - it is highly depressing. I have Jewish friends and I refuse to let them feel scared in Scotland but apparently that's where we are now. One of them refuses to go to Glasgow now its fucking nuts. Another always supported Celtic, not now. People are nuts.

What happened on the 7th Oct was one of the most depraved and evil things I'd ever read about and seen the videos of. It was akin to Vlad the impaler from the 1400s. You'd think humanity would have moved on from ripping babies heads off and killing them in front of their mothers then raping the mothers to death, but no, seems we are still stuck in the 1400s because this was done to Jewish people, so apparently it "doesn't count". If this had happened in any other country nobody would have been protesting the government's counter attack to bomb the terrorists.

The genocide of women and children is horrifying and israeli government are now like for like with hamas - two sides of the same coin. And it's always women and children and who suffer most. It all needs to stop. All of it. But it won't because humanity (and sadly a lot of it driven by violent, evil men) will never stop. Maybe A.I should win and kill us all...

What size would you say a venue has to be before the owner loses the right to any say over who plays there?

I mean I assume you’d be happy with a small venue not wanting Nigel Farage to have a Reform event there and turning him down? At what point is it not exercising your right to choose your clients and becomes de-platforming?

If it's a publicly-available event - any size. Or are you arguing that venue-owners should be able to ban GC events because they disagree with them?

alcovecupboards · 20/09/2026 21:03

Not sure how to edit, so I'll reply here. Was that the festival that removed her after she said "I do not want them anywhere near me or my music."

Because if so - why would she want to perform for them? Either way - she absolutely shouldn't have been de-platformed.

You can't see the difference in Macklemore being literally de-platformed for the expression of his views by the billionaire owners of venues - and fans not buying tickets/albums? The former - no matter who it happens to - is outrageous, the latter is simply market forces. Has Roisin been de-platformed in such a way? Last I checked her tour went ahead in all of its scheduled venues - just not quite as sold out as it would have been.

“her tour went ahead in all of its scheduled venues - just not quite as sold out as it would have been”

Do you have a citation for that ‘not quite as sold out’ claim?

ETA RM was removed from a festival. Or ‘de-platformed’ if you prefer.

Edited

Her Instagram... not all her dates sold out. Or is the argument now that she hasn't been cancelled and sold out every tour date? I can't keep up!

Sure, and Macklemore should be fine with being cancelled if the venue owner doesn't want him playing there. You see how this goes?

Roisin Murphy's (former) fans are passionately pro-trans. Contrary to Mumsnet belief - people aren't actually required to continue supporting an artist they find objectionable. As she has now discovered. That isn't cancellation - that's free market choice. Just like the (failed) boycott of M&S - no-one is required to shop there because you disagree with their changing room situation.

I can’t believe Ed gets nearly cancelled but that costume below is par for the course, applauded even. Mad stuff.

noblegiraffe · 20/09/2026 20:24

It certainly does seem to be the hard left wing way, to ditch anyone as soon as they say something that isn’t part of the approved opinion list. It must be quite tedious to keep track of it all.

The rest of us are just trying to keep track of the ones who have turned out to be paedophiles.

which TBH many of us agree with.

Speak for yourself, I know quite a few who don't.

Well I clearly was - wasn't saying everyone did ffs.

I think the killing of palestine children in recent events is horrific - if disagree with that and think it's great and wonderful what can I say to that?

I also think Hammas triggered it all with absouletely appalling crimes and the Israeli govenement has broken interational law in reponse which UN agree with and agree that palestine is under occupation - so yes I'm clearly out on a limb there all by myself Hmm.

Shedmistress · 20/09/2026 16:13

I mean that looks kinda racist.

No, those Cali boys in Sombreros were racist. Not Macklemore.
Just like Bob Vylan calling out "kill the IDF" didn't actually mean kill Jews. Oh no.

Whatchoo talkin bout Willis?

Heard it all now! Ive followed Roisin since Tight Sweater and this never happened.

The 'fancy dress' that he said was 'just random'.
Hatred of Jewish people in plain sight.

Ed Sheeran was on stage last night saying that people he thought were his friends, and even his own family have backed off from him, and don't want to be seen with him. Which is pretty fucking terrible when his 'appalling behaviour' was to not cancel concerts that loads of his fans had paid lots of money to get to.

Hearing the extremes of those on the “right side of history” is something I’m finding deeply depressing.

I don’t know how the western world has reached this point, but the level of intolerance is disturbing. Family and friends deserting those they see as blasphemous, even to the point where they persecute those who choose to say nothing.

Whatever happened to tolerance and loyalty? I’m not sure I want to be alive in the world as it is now.

EasternStandard · 20/09/2026 15:50

As for Ed Sheeran he got himself into a pickle due to inviting Macklemore, now in a career threatening situation has had to say something.

Artist management everywhere beware of doing the same.

roxyro · 20/09/2026 15:47

The ones the OP mentioned aren’t voicing support for the right side are they? Celebrities will always queue up to support the latest cause célèbre - publicly that is. I’m disappointed in Ed for caving in but he was in a very difficult position and I really hope he totally blanks every single one of his so called friends over this.

What on earth was he thinking.

Macklemore appears to be one of those terribly unlucky anti-racists, like Jeremy Corbyn, who just keeps on being accidentally antisemitic. Not sure what Sheeran expected tbh.

I think there a time and place for comments about Palestine - which TBH many of us agree with.

A political rally a supporter event even in a news article or interview - he made them at a music concert in a country with a large jewish population and heated poltical atmosphere where audence had paid to watch music not poltcial commentary. He knew it would cause blacklash could have predicted the areans and promoters in that system may feel need to do something back.

There another patten I've noticed and seen articles about where more seasoned professionals in art world trying to help out up and coming and the up and comming stabbing them in the back with omicause stuff - and then act like backlash on seaosned professional is nothing to do with them and are suprised they are upset.
