Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

In light of the whole arts world supporting Macklemore over his censorship, who in the music industry supported Róisín Murphy?

To her, I could add who in TV over Linehan, dance over Rosie Kay?
Sure, JKR is too big to be cancelled, but I didn't see any writers flock to her side.
I'm sure I've missed a few.
So, pressure put on Eddie Sheeran to drop Macklemore for his overtly political Free Palestine! chants, banners etc.
Hey, I may not share his politics, but I don't believe in censorship.
But as the wave of support comes in for him, and let's face it, this cancellation can only boost his career, I'm right now asking where was the wave of anti-censorship support for Róisín Murphy a few years back, when <her own record label!> cancelled her?
Macklemore walks into his next gig next week, his artist-activist credentials burnished, his opportunities to boost his career scaled up.
Róisín? She was at existential risk of career collapse.
Rosie Kay? Did the dance community in any meaningful way support her freedom to speak up? Highlight the iniquity of her losing the school shed sweated to build?
Linehan? Well, he really is a salutary lesson in the Age Of Scolding.
I know I've missed a few.
And of course multiples more women in lesser positions, cancelled from running maternity classes, as Green party candidates (I know one personally), from sports teams, etc etc, all of them invaluable in their fields, but cancelled or silenced via threat of cancellation.
So, while I see the Macklemore cancellation as poor in an apparently freedom-valuing West, I know this is in effect arbitrary. He isn't being dropped by his record label, all venues not touching him, activists working to bury him. If he ran a singing school, he wouldn't have it taken from him. If he was a writer for TV, he wouldn't have all opportunities for a decade denied him, true poison pen culture behind his back and to his face.
So I ask, why when Macklemore gets a prime gig cancelled, the whole arts/activist/Omnicause world lifts him up, yet when Róisín/Rosie/Graeme get cancelled, the rest of the mass bear down in them?
Of course, we all know the answer. I'm just finding I need to articulate what I see as a hypocritical world doubling down.

Ok. Well I’ll leave you all to your conspiracy theories and hate at this stage. Hope they make you happy.

Oh dear. It looks as though I won't get an explanation.

Olivebrancher · 21/09/2026 16:48

who has mentioned UK party politics anywhere apart from
you?

You talked about the far right and I think most posters on Mumsnet are based in the UK. Were you referring to a different far right?

I'm just trying to understand your point.

As explained previously I think it's 'far right' to suggest that women don't need rights, so I am wondering if you are 'far right'.

You don't get a free pass on these kind of accusations. Have a look at the Róisín Murphy and Rosie Kay cases, look at the sustained hate they got from your side.
A Jewish billionaire took exception to anti Semitic tropes from Macklemore, but his side will close around him, he experiences no hurt to his career.
Whereas your side will now ramp up the hate towards Sheeran.
So, don't come on here accusing me, us, of hate.
Try and be more self reflecting rather than just a mouthpiece.

You've just proved you're an Omnicause adherent. Because you've detected what you consider to be transphobia in me, and you gauge my mentioning of two tier as racist, and you've totally misunderstood who uses Omnicause (pretty much everyone), you've gone and accused me on the whole damn shooting match.
Indeed, you are Omnicause to your little toes...accusing me of being guilty of one or two sins, thus guilty of the lot.
Thanks so much for demonstrating the Omnicause in action.
You're only the "good cop" in good cop bad cop because you're so endearingly naive in your proclamations.
I mean, you've literally only heard of the Omnicause today, and yet on the same day, you've decided it's a "far right" concept, and thus I'm "far right".
Amazing, I must check my privilege, especially after I voted Green at the GE, and will again if the same candidate is put fwds by them.

Now I do know, let me be clearer: your views are transphobic, racist, and anti immigration

I have lost track here - Is any political party (even the Greens?) promoting uncontrolled immigration? Are they therefore all racist?

Oh sorry, I didn’t mean to be a softer voice! I didn’t know what you meant by omnicause as I’m not in the kind of far right circles where it’s used.

Now I do know, let me be clearer: your views are transphobic, racist, and anti immigration; you are a climate change denier and a conspiracy theorist. You are actively making the world more dangerous for women and children.

Hope that helps!

😂 😂😂

See I told you a mischief.

What part of the 'creative industry' are you in Olive, fantasy fiction?

ArabellaScott · 21/09/2026 16:44

Everybody Olive doesn't like is racist, climate change denier, etc etc.

I have to say, it's not the most convincing argument I'veheard.

ArabellaScott · 21/09/2026 16:43

Olivebrancher · 21/09/2026 16:28

I think by ‘widely used’ you might mean ‘widely used by the far right’.

Honestly I did think that most of the gender critical feminists on mumsnet spend quite a bit of their time making the case that gender critical views don’t need to be aligned with the far right, and I am genuinely surprised to see people on this thread reveling in racism, anti-immigration rhetoric, climate change denial etc.

😂

I'm seeing a pattern on so many threads. One TRA will come in and berate eg Róisín as a raging transphobe, gets everything coming to her, noone in the arts world wants to work with them.
Boilerplate identical criticism of Rosie Kay etc.
And certainly no fans want anything to do with them.
Their "cancelling" is pure market forces...say shit...get shit outcomes.
Yet our boy Mackelmore, now his cancelling is billionaire crushing of pro Palestine voices (Robert Kraft, with cowardly Ed Sheeran in tow), Zionist plot etc etc.
Now the Zionist capitalist billionaire system is crushing the innocent. Not market forces, Mackelmore against the system. Unfair censorship, not fake narrative of Róisín.
And then a babe in the wood Olive comes along, a softer version of the same moralism, that Róisín only has herself to blame, but Macklemore is a victim.
Then a side order of conspiracy theories to try and discredit the view common on MN.
It's like a "bad cop, good cop" double act.
My point remains, the Omnicause (sorry Olive) would never be happier than if the likes of Róisín, Rosie, JKR etc were never heard of again.
The sane middle, I give not a shit if Macklemore has a long and successful career peddling the Omnicause in his music, but if Róisín is going to be cancelled for her so-called transgressions, then why not Macklemore?
The fact the whole arts community will huddle around him, but were happy to let Róisín, and Rosie, rot, is the big takeaway for me.

And do you think it also works the other way round? I.e. Are you aligning gender critical feminism with anti immigration and ‘climate change’ isn’t real viewpoints??

because I didn’t think you’d persuade me to stand up for gender critical views, but there are many regular gender critical posters on here who would be horrified by that, and spend a great deal of time explaining why they don’t believe their views are aligned with the far right etc 😮

Are you aligning gender critical feminism with anti immigration and ‘climate change’ isn’t real viewpoints??

Why would anyone do that? The roots of gender critical feminism are left wing. The clue is in the name.

I would, however, argue that people who promote pseudoscience and attack sex based rights in the Equality Act are difficult to distinguish from the far right.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 21/09/2026 16:32

Thinking is not their strong suit, they should give it up before they do themselves a mischief.

Wonder what Olive thinks of intersectionality?

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 21/09/2026 16:20

Olive they're talking about you ⬇

"Coined by Alysia Ames, an Iowa accountant who writes for Ordinary Times, Omnicause is an alternative label for intersectionality. That’s the social theory credited to Kimberle Crenshaw, a leading legal scholar of critical race theory, which in today’s political arenas has become a widely known term to many more people than those who actually understand it."

“If you protest one thing, you protest everything — intersectional inanity.”

Hadley, as may be expected, is funnier.

Gender, environment, Gaza: they’re all the same, even though LGBT people live under the threat of death in Palestine, and I haven’t heard too much from Hamas about the environment. According to The Omnicause, they’re all magically connected. It’s the fatberg of causes, and the fat gluing them all together is Western narcissism.

...But history doesn’t work in single, simple ways, alas. It would be so much easier if it did, but it doesn’t, and part of growing up is learning this fairly basic truth. You can resist it if you like, and reside in a state of arrested development, clinging with your fingernails to the fatberg Omnicause, but don’t kid yourself that you’re doing any good. All you are, really, is a crank and a conspiracy theorist.

Excellent as always from Hadley. The Guardian is poorer without her as one of their journalists.

Love Hadley Freeman

As Hadley Freeman writes in The Jewish Chronicle, Omnicause is “the Fatberg of activism,” referring to the label given to a rock-like mass of unprocessed waste matter that can clog sewer systems.

Can someone call out to Olive, they must be all at sea right now.
Or maybe Olive will see this article in the JC, and assume it's all a Jewish, um, conspiracy.
