Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

In light of the whole arts world supporting Macklemore over his censorship, who in the music industry supported Róisín Murphy?

To her, I could add who in TV over Linehan, dance over Rosie Kay?
Sure, JKR is too big to be cancelled, but I didn't see any writers flock to her side.
I'm sure I've missed a few.
So, pressure put on Eddie Sheeran to drop Macklemore for his overtly political Free Palestine! chants, banners etc.
Hey, I may not share his politics, but I don't believe in censorship.
But as the wave of support comes in for him, and let's face it, this cancellation can only boost his career, I'm right now asking where was the wave of anti-censorship support for Róisín Murphy a few years back, when <her own record label!> cancelled her?
Macklemore walks into his next gig next week, his artist-activist credentials burnished, his opportunities to boost his career scaled up.
Róisín? She was at existential risk of career collapse.
Rosie Kay? Did the dance community in any meaningful way support her freedom to speak up? Highlight the iniquity of her losing the school shed sweated to build?
Linehan? Well, he really is a salutary lesson in the Age Of Scolding.
I know I've missed a few.
And of course multiples more women in lesser positions, cancelled from running maternity classes, as Green party candidates (I know one personally), from sports teams, etc etc, all of them invaluable in their fields, but cancelled or silenced via threat of cancellation.
So, while I see the Macklemore cancellation as poor in an apparently freedom-valuing West, I know this is in effect arbitrary. He isn't being dropped by his record label, all venues not touching him, activists working to bury him. If he ran a singing school, he wouldn't have it taken from him. If he was a writer for TV, he wouldn't have all opportunities for a decade denied him, true poison pen culture behind his back and to his face.
So I ask, why when Macklemore gets a prime gig cancelled, the whole arts/activist/Omnicause world lifts him up, yet when Róisín/Rosie/Graeme get cancelled, the rest of the mass bear down in them?
Of course, we all know the answer. I'm just finding I need to articulate what I see as a hypocritical world doubling down.

All I could hear in my head when reading Olive's diatribe was Violets "I'll scream and scream and scream until I'm sick!"

Edited

Violet Elizabeth Bott joins the Stasi.

(that's how comedian Andrew Doyle describes modern day left-wing activists).

They didn't call you a homophobe, so at least you're not making the world more dangerous place for same sex attracted people. 10 points deducted for them though, the Omnicause gatekeepers will be after 'em if they find out, so they're in more trouble than you. 😂

I mean, I've been called horrible before in lots of ways, but not these.
It's like scoring a Grand Slam in tennis, or all four trophies if you're a Premiership team.

This person earlier called me a transphobe, racist, anti immigration, climate change denier and conspiracist. And to boot, actively making the world more dangerous for women and children.
A person who denies the Omnicause exists yet demonstrates textbook behaviour for one adhering to it.
I mean, it's got to be a parody account, surely?

It's been explained before: we are not a hive mind. Yes there are some brilliant women posting here, who can discuss and explain issues in a way that brings clarity and aids debate, but even if these 'big names' (though I bet they would prefer to be called something like 'regular contributor', and, as has been pointed out, some are already on this thread), were to come on this thread, careful, informed debate would be the result. So hinting that a) there is a leadership hierarchy and b) that hierarchy would be disappointed by the rest of us is simply silly.

I think this person can be safely ignored.
As of this afternoon, they hadn't heard the term Omnicause.
As of 5 minutes later, they had it explained to them on here, decided it was a far right conspiracy/dog whistle, and that I and the rest of MN were far right conspiracists.
I mean, what can you do with some people?

This thread is terrifying. I hope some of the more thoughtful Big Names of gender critical mumsnet make it over here and take a good look at the type of racists and conspiracy theorists they’re throwing their lot in with.

He let his friends down so I can see why some are questioning his loyalty.

Hmm...I think you've got that the wrong way round!

Which is why he is supported. He is backing the other current sacred caste, Palestinians (but until they get rid of Hamas and Hezbollah and Iran's backing of said, there is no hope for them). Had Macklemore spoken of supporting Israel not one person would have spoken for him. Ditto if he had said men can't be women.

Yes, Palestinians and Trans are very much the cause du jour. Anyone who fails to sign up risks the wrath of the mob.

I'm hoping that one day ordinary people will bring this lot crashing down.

ArabellaScott · 21/09/2026 14:43

Olive you'll find most people on this board are not generally keen to chant catechisms on demand. Are you going to continue to ask us all to trot out statements on the person/people/views you require everyone to performatively condemn?

Your real comparator here is Ed Sheeran, not Macklemore. Macklemore is the one touting the approved line not the one going against it.

GaIadriel · 21/09/2026 19:31

Without knowing all the details I'd say it's probs because the woke mob are generally pro trans without much exception. It's less of a consensus with the Israel/Palestine thing.

BezMark · 21/09/2026 19:17

The wide eyed ingenue posters who unerringly find themselves drawn co.pletely by accident to this niche corner of a minor UK talkboard. Dozens and dozens.

apropos of nothing, comes to mind that blue Peter stunt with the hundreds of people coming out of a 4 man vango tent.

(Spoilers, the same people going around the back of the set and sneaking in, coming out again and again as new people)

Olivebrancher · 21/09/2026 16:28

I think by ‘widely used’ you might mean ‘widely used by the far right’.

Honestly I did think that most of the gender critical feminists on mumsnet spend quite a bit of their time making the case that gender critical views don’t need to be aligned with the far right, and I am genuinely surprised to see people on this thread reveling in racism, anti-immigration rhetoric, climate change denial etc.

On what basis are you calling Clarence Page far right?

With friends like that, who needs enemies.

Ed Sheeran was on stage last night saying that people he thought were his friends, and even his own family have backed off from him, and don't want to be seen with him. Which is pretty fucking terrible when his 'appalling behaviour' was to not cancel concerts that loads of his fans had paid lots of money to get to.

He let his friends down so I can see why some are questioning his loyalty.

Oh dear. It looks as though I won't get an explanation.

MN is like an exam in critical thinking.
The TRAs and naive Omnicausers enter it, thinking they can get the nasty dimwitted TERFs to roll over with classics like "kids know their gender ID at 5", and "you're all transphobes and racists and conspiracists"
And then they either bow out silently, or express "woe is me" like dear Olive.
Yet they're so lacking in any self reflection that they believe they've won the argument.
Back to Trans R/eddit for them, that's more their intellectual level.

But Sheeran knew full well what he would get with Macklemore...he's seen his act, and what he says between every song.
As one does with Bob Vylan.

Doesn't that suggest that he was fine with it personally? Whether he agrees, or just thinks he should be able to say what he wants.

The issue seems to me to be with the contracts he has with the venues. Which is not a small thing. And he's always seemed to be fan focused, and ultimately they would be the losers.

You are right that people are not being consistent in their claims to want free speech. Most though, if you dig, actually don't care about that. Many people now only believe in free speech for people they think are in the right.

The other elements is, and I think this is important, they are after Sheeran because they are enjoying taking him down. It's not really principled.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 21/09/2026 17:10

Julie Burchill in The Spectator, with her usual wit.

"And now Ed Sheeran (who seemed happy to be supported on his current American tour by the fantastically pro-Pally ‘white rapper’ Macklemore) is being reviled by the practitioners of what I call ‘Fresh’n’funky anti-Semitism’. Not the old right-wing kind which tried to keep Jews out of golf clubs for allegedly being vulgar, but the new left-wing kind which tries to keep them out of cultural discourse for allegedly being baby-killers. Isn’t progress wonderful!"

Well, one Left activist artist has the volume of one hundred Ed Sheerans, maybe it just feels like it.
