It's not a question of owing anyone rehabilitation. The problem is that most people who commit offences are damaged in some way, usually traumatised when they were children. Sex offenders were often sexually abused themselves as children. So incarcerating them doesn't help with any of this, it just traumatises them more. If you release them without trying to help them come to terms with their own trauma you are just creating more victims when they reoffend.

This is the reality of the situation. Although it sounds like a plan to leave them in the desert somewhere I don't think you really think that is practicable do you?

Prison should be a mixture of 1. consequences so that victims feel that their suffering has been recognised, but also 2. attempts to rehabilitate offenders simply because not to offer this, tempting though it is, does not address the underlying causes.

For Governments to free up money for this isn't an easy sell. It's an easy target for the tabloids. So we keep going around the offending/incarceration/reoffending loop.

There are no easy answers that I can see.

Their victims dgaf about their traumatic backgrounds I imagine.

Multiple psychologists assert that paedophiles simply cannot be rehabilitated. It’s not something they can or wish to be ‘trained’ out of. At best they can be contained or closely monitored on release. Ankle tags and no access to the internet?

I am actually starting to believe we don't owe sex offenders rehabilitation. Place them out in a desert with a tent and a bucket and spade and let them fend for themselves for all I care. Put up a laser fence and ban the bastards from society. At 53 years old I have read and heard more than enough examples of abusive men harming others, and I simply don't care about their welfare anymore. I don't believe they can change. Send them away. Zero tolerance. The good ones can stay.

What's the alternative? Brutalise then for 20 years then release them? That just creates more victims doesn't it?

Well we need to rehabilitate them don't we?

You cannot rehabilitate a paedophile.

I have no idea what to say about the motorcycle.

Let's try "the continued manipulation of a child."

Makes one wonder about the parent who was friendly with Scmid. What part are they playing in all this?

There is an extra bit of info, linked to by Reduxx:

The basis for the plea deal to go through and for the court to adhere to the agreed-upon sentence in the event of a conviction is, in addition to the former police officer's confession, a victim-offender reconciliation agreement. As part of this agreement, the young victim is to receive a motorcycle and €5,000. Furthermore, the defendant must fully pay a fine from a previous – apparently related – ruling by the Rosenheim District Court. The fact that the 55-year-old reoffended so quickly after this July 2025 ruling was considered an aggravating factor by the prosecution.

So he seems to have had some sort of very recent related offence.

I have no idea what to say about the motorcycle.

Do furnish us with a detailed rehabilitation scheme, based on international evidence, with verifiable success rates and accurate costings.

There are several meta analyses available and they’re so easy to find

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 18/09/2026 14:34

So the price of raping a child is 2 years, €4000 and a motorbike.

Does he at least lose his job?

I wonder if he assumed she wouldn’t tell. Or wouldn’t be believed.

testmatchspecial · 18/09/2026 13:52

This thread is about a rape committed in Germany by a German man so he will go to a German prison. Our prisoner numbers are irrelevant.

I only became aware of the privacy laws when it arose in the case of the Madeleine McCann suspect Christian Brueckner (sp?). I don’t think you can publish his surname in German papers can you?

It has the suggestion of a reward, somehow. Never heard anything like it.

Imagine when she is an adult and able to fully reflect on her ordeal and she realises that the people who should have defended her tried to placate her instead, with €5000 and a motorbike. A motorbike which will remind her of her rape everytime she looks at it.

A motorcycle? Wtf? That's grotesque.

It's bizarre. She's not even old enough to ride it.

What a sorry state of the world we live in. So because prisons would be full to bursting with child abusers and rapists we have to let them out where they are free to re-offend abd hurt innocent children. If there’s that many walking among us then castrating them should be an option.

Well we need to rehabilitate them don't we?

Mugsey62 · 18/09/2026 12:20

So 20 years? I am interested in an exact figure simply because you have to consider how you would manage the prison estate and the inmates therein. So if you have a sentence of 20 years for this offence then you would fill the prisons very quickly.

Regardless of what Michael Howard proclaimed, prison doesn't work at all. We have the biggest PC population in Western Europe and there are no signs that this reduces crime.

What outcome would you be hoping for from this 20 year imprisonment?

I would have thought it very appropriate tbh, but no problem.

It's too broad. It would lead the thread away from the focus on this child and the brutality that has been enacted on her. You would probably get more interaction if you started a separate thread anyway, because people would be drawn to your thread heading.

Massive topic, not really appropriate to this thread. Start a separate thread and I might join in.

I wouldn't quibble with a sentence of a couple of decades, in a men's prison of course.

Why is it so important to you that I give you a specific number 🤔

Given that there has been a clear abuse of trust by a serving police officer who was also a family friend, my sentencing guideline would be: fuckloads of years.

In the UK you can get several years in prison for downloading child abuse images. He did that, raped a child and performed sex acts on a dog. The punishment is ludicrously light. Why?
