This information is for trans (transgender) and non-binary people in England. It tells you about the adult NHS screening programmes that are available in England and explains who we invite for screening.

We use trans as an umbrella term to embrace the diverse range of identities outside the traditional male/female definitions. These include transgender, gender fluid and non-binary.

Full details and listings (long) at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/nhs-population-screening-information-for-transgender-people/nhs-population-screening-information-for-trans-people

Just think if created by sex it would be of use to everyone, and even educated some about screening that might need or should have.

Isn’t race a social construct like gender identity?

So are money, age and class. What’s your point? Are you saying race is not real? Wow! That’s a hot take right there? The thing is, race is verifiable. Gender identity is not. People can be gender fluid, they cannot be race fluid. People can opt out of gender (unless you are claiming non binary is bollocks), they cannot opt out of their race. People can claim to be a gender they are not, (see TIM ,TIF, and NB). and it is accepted. People cannot claim to be a race they are not (see Rachel Dolezal), who was vilified for claiming to be a race she was not, even though she identified as black.

In conclusion, black men are a minority because they are oppressed because of their race, transpeople are not a minority because is a TIM decided tomorrow he was actually a man, he would no longer be an oppressed minority. Black men do not have that privilege. You cannot identify into or out of race.

Rollingpinofdoom · 11/09/2026 20:24

And so are TIM. They are also men so not a minority. Black men are as they have a verifiable characteristic. Men claiming to be women do not. No one can prove gender identity actually exists. Race can be proven to exist.

Black men are men which meant they are not a minority according your logic

No. They are not a minority. They are either male or female. Neither of those are minorities. Women are oppressed though and face daily discrimination. Especially those without English as their first language. To be honest, as non binary comes under the trans umbrella, and non binary is a rejection of gendered stereotypes and not identifying with them, it could be argued everyone is non binary as no one adheres to all the stereotypes for their gender. Therefore transpeople are actually a majority. So yay for them!!

You were arguing that trans people aren’t a minority before and weren’t even talking about language Do you now know agree they are a minority?

Octogenarians are not discriminated against? Great news! Ageism is defeated for people over 79!

I said routine discrimination not that it never happens

Exactly. But it appears only transpeople are an oppressed minority

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 11/09/2026 20:13

The vast majority of people know whether they are male or female, whether they have a penis or a vagina, whether they have a prostate or a cervix - no matter how they choose to identify or to categorise themselves.

If you are adult enough to make serious choices about your body and identity, you are adult enough to hear the word cervix without melting like an ice cream in a heatwave. Stop expecting to be coddled with stupid terms like cervix-haver and either man-up or woman-up - your choice - and get cervical screening if you have a cervix.

If you have a cervix, you need cervical screening - it is that simple.

So do women who have English as a second language, but it was considered no big deal if they didn’t get screening because they didn’t understand the language used. So if it was ok for them to have to miss screening because they didn’t realise they were eligible, then it’ll be ok if a TIF doesn’t realise she’s included because she doesn’t understand the language used? Or is it different if the person is trans?

What do you think a protected characteristic is there to address? And the part you’re missing here is that I said people with gender reassignment make up a tiny percentage of the population

You said nothing about discrimination. You said a minority had a protected characteristic. If we’re talking people with a protected characteristic that are discriminated against, women would be a minority by your definition.

Yes it seems useful to me and is clearly directed at people with trans identities. It was when it spilled over into general health that it bothered me (the whole 'person with a cervix' INSTEAD of women stuff)

Edited

Exactly. Women had to be salted people with a cervix. And when women complained, saying it dehumanised them and reduced then to body parts, and that women who did not have English as a first language may struggle to understand it meant them, they were told to suck it up as it wasn’t a big deal. So why is the reverse not true? If it’s not a big deal for women to be called people with a cervix, surely it’s not a big deal for TIF to be called women right?

Rollingpinofdoom · 11/09/2026 19:44

No, I would argue they don’t face the routine discrimination that a minority does

But they know they are female. They must have requested the change. So it’s on them isn’t it? They need to tell the GP or whoever that they still need the screenings.

Yeah it's on them to organise their own screening. The information in the link tells them what they are entitled to and how to access it, if you take the time to read it.

NotTodayTy · 11/09/2026 19:33

Rollingpinofdoom · 11/09/2026 19:10

So in your eyes are octogenarians a minority? They have a specific protected characteristic and make up a small percentage of the population.

For anyone who hasn't actually clicked the link, it's actually really useful -- it has very specific information for particular circumstances, like trans men registered as male who might not be sure whether they still need breast screening if they've had mastectomies, or whether they'll be invited if registered as male. I imagine it would come up if you searched 'trans man post-top surgery do i need breast screening' and it gives you a clear answer which involves asking your doctor about the amount of tissue you have remaining.

None of this information would be available to a confused person if everything just said 'get the screenings relevant to your biological sex'. This page is nothing to do with me and I wouldn't go looking for it, but contains info that I imagine I would go looking for if I was a trans man worried about a lump in a post-surgery chest.

Yes it seems useful to me and is clearly directed at people with trans identities. It was when it spilled over into general health that it bothered me (the whole 'person with a cervix' INSTEAD of women stuff)

No, the point I was making is that trans people make up a very small percentage of the population and have a specific protected characteristic to stop discrimination. It’s because of this trans people are considered a minority

It very clearly is not since some trans-identified women are registered as male and therefore not called up for cervical screening. This makes clear how they can still access it.

TransParentlyAnnoyed · 11/09/2026 01:24

It's about trust. Lots of nb/trans people are deeply wary of attending screening, with many avoiding it altogether, and the NHS is trying to address this.

That's literally all it is. A message targeted at a vulnerable population, reassuring them they won't be discriminated against or harmed.

The only harm done to trans people by the NHS is the detrimental side effects of cross sex hormones and mutilation surgery. All of it done at the request of said trans people. There is no ‘literal violence’ done to anyone by acknowledging their biological sex, and offering them health screening relevant to it. TiM’s need prostate checks and TiFs need cervical screening and mammograms. Biology doesn’t stop being biology because someone is being allowed to indulge their delusions.

Whatchamacallitt · 11/09/2026 16:52

I don't see anything wrong with it. It's factual information about how they will be called up, or not, for screening depending on the sex they are registered as. I don't personally believe sex should be changed in GP records but regardless, the fact is that it can be and that affects screening.

There is nothing wrong with writing outreach literature for specific populations in a way that is accessible to them. The issue arises when general information is bastardised and made incomprehensible to your average person.

I'm GC but I don't want trans-identified people to miss out on healthcare and if this information helps then great. Being against it simply because it doesn't correlate with your personal beliefs is spiteful in my opinion.
