“Started in 2019, Drag Race UK brought British drag into mainstream entertainment in the UK”. I think the Black & White Minstrel Show played a similar role in platforming Black performers in the 1950/ 1970s. And made them mainstream entertainment. Giving a voice to marginalised, and underrepresented cultures. BBC

Only because of lack of budget. They are simply moving to WOW (RuPaul’s streaming service). Drag Race UK is continuing but only those with a subscription will be able to see it. Rupaul has done that with most versions of his show as it makes him more money.

Comparing it to minstrel shows displays a shocking lack of history knowledge (of both drag as an art form and minstrelsy). You may as well say British Pantomime and Black and White Minstrels are the same.

Every time you’re involved in making a tv programme, you’re invited to fill in a ‘diamond diversity’ survey. However, as I recall, you can only put how you choose to identify, not whether you’re male or female.

NotInMyyName · 13/09/2026 21:32

Thanks @EvokerThe Diamond Report makes for interesting reading. The authors seem to be an independent organisation which has access to broadcasters data (I havent looked at their funding so the independent assumtion could be wrong).

“People who identify as transgender are more strongly represented on-screen (0.9%) than off-screen (0.6%) (Figure 14). They are far less represented in senior roles (0.2%) than they are in non-senior (0.8%) roles “

If the UK population of transgender is ~0.5%, does that mean that this group IS represented fully on screen?

Heres the link to the report which I got via the twitter link.

https://diamondreport2025.uk/home

Edit: not wholly sure my comment adds to the drag queen debate which platforms men who are gay and or T+. But the report does comment on LGB representation on and off screen and indicates ample representation. Those with a disability seem to be the least represented group on screen.

Interesting comment by Equity, I'm not sure the LGB are overrepresented, are they? It would be hard to tell anyway, as unless they're the kind of person who announces their sexuality, it's not relevant information.

Evoker · 13/09/2026 17:57

Saw an interesting tweet about the reaction to the drag race cancellation which talked about the over representation of LGBTQ people in entertainment when compared to the representation in the general public, the Diamond report or something?

So it doesn't hold that they're under represented on TV, not at all. That's not the story here. The story is that using women and women's bodily functions to punch down on while wrapping it up in the gaudy tinsel of drag costumery didn't mean that we didn't notice the rampant misogyny. We did notice, and we didn't like it.

As an aside, the diamond report shows stats like 'LGBTQ representation in senior roles'. Categories such as gay men and lesbian women make it clear that men are in fact, much more likely to be in senior roles than lesbian women. Plus ca change...

Equity. This "will have a direct impact on the work opportunities for drag performers"

There are a lot of struggling actors out there, well worth fighting for. This is just virtue signalling isn't it?

Equity have been disproportionately obsessed with their lgbt+ members for years now. Does my head in. Also constantly telling all their members how upset we should all be about the Supreme Court ruling. I can tell you many actors are GC but really can’t speak up if we want to work.

There's a garden centre near me, a good one, which I no longer use, partly because of a coded notice excluding non-British people, quickly removed, but mostly because they hosted drag nights, and one of the performers used a pornified version of my perfectly ordinary name. It was worse than when I hear a person calling their dog by it, because at least they like their dog. (Bitch)

No surprise. Trans/drag misogyny usually go hand in hand with racism, in my actual personal experience.

Despite the outfits, there is a huge macho competitive element to drag. It is a certain sort of gay man telling the straight establishment that they can be vile to women too but in their own way.

gay man telling the straight establishment that they can be vile to women too but in their own way.

Also a very good point. Like they're after approval of straight men but picking on their target in common - women. Kind of like kids in the school playground wanting to blend in and seek approval of the class bully by joining in the bully, to give themselves 'cover'.

Lins77 · 13/09/2026 13:32

I went to a drag show on holiday a few years ago. I didn't particularly want to go, but the people I was with were keen and it was described as "family friendly" and heavily promoted at our resort, so I thought it might be okay.

No, it was not and I don't know how they had the nerve to call it family friendly, it makes me wonder what the rest can be like. There was a lot of very sexualised "humour" and insulting of women - sometimes individual women - in the audience in ways that were not funny at all (though of course people howled with laughter). I remember one "Dolly Parton" skit where the entire joke was a humongous pair of fake breasts.

I suppose they were good performers in the sense of being skilled at what they did, but the whole thing left me deeply uncomfortable.

Drag is a celebration and protest

It absolutely isn't. It's a group of men saying 'aren't women shit compared to men! Hahahaha! Let's take all the worst stereotypes of how women behave (bitchy, cliquey etc), and combine them with ridiculously over the top makeup and massive fake boobs. Throw in some offensive language about how disgusting women's bodies are and then tell women that they're joyless harridans because they look at drag and say ' hang on a minute, why are we the ones getting shit for saying that men laughing at us is misogyny on steriods?'

If it's a protest, why are women the punchline?

If it's a protest, why are women the punchline?

ITA! And therein is the issue. Women are the punchline for gay men being beaten up/oppressed by macho men.

Drag is a celebration and protest.

It's not a celebration of sexual violence. And as if I haven't noticed sexual violence, when I and all of my friends - every woman I've ever met, in fact - have been sexually assaulted. I'm a childhood violence survivor too.

Young gay men know who they are. They aren't 'confused' and have plenty of positive role models - teachers, parents and people in all professions. How they choose to express their sexuality is up to them. Watching a drag queen is going to be for all of them - but it won't harm them.

And again, my main point was how racist it is to compare drag to minstrelsy. Gay men having fun with gender isn't what's oppressing women - it's rape culture, the destruction of our services, and creeping fascism.

No drag queen ever advocated removing my reproductive rights, defended violence against women, or defined me by my genitals. That's Reform.

Drag is a celebration of hateful misogyny. It celebrates the mocking and oppression of women. And you know it.

And as a woman of colour, I can assure you that it is identical the the Ministrels. And we all know that.

TransParentlyAnnoyed · 11/09/2026 00:46

Nope, a protest at the criminalisation of being gay, and the relentless, violent, ignorant targeting of queer communities which continues today. A fuck-you stand against the orderly daughters, often.

They can do that WITHOUT mocking women and suggesting we are promiscuous 'fishy' whores and dumb bimbos with massive tits. Women don't exist to boost gay men up. They could choose to dress up as macho men and take the piss out of the macho homophobic men that oppress them, but no.... That would be too risky. Better punching down on those who can't fight back - women, than risk a beating by macho men.

Minstrel shows were part of violent systemic racism. They were vital props (and propaganda) for slavery, depicting Black people as subhuman simpletons incapable of making their own decisions.

Under slavery, Black women were treated as less than animals, raped from cradle to grave by their 'owners', forced through rape to create more and more children until they died, often very young.

Minstrel shows promoted the lie that Black women were promiscuous, stupid and undeserving of any rights.

Comparing any form of minstrel show to drag is repellent. Women do drag, and it is a protest. Drag has always been subversive, and a way for LGBT+ people to express themselves. Try reading some queer history and seeing why.

It is deeply racist to compare drag to minstrel shows. A total denial and
trivialisation of the malice and violence behind the former.

Yeah, drag names like Anna Bortion, Miss Carriage, Molestia Child and calling women 'fishy' are not suggesting women are promiscuous. Sure.....

Like the minstrel shows, drag is performed by the ruling oppressor class and mock the oppressed. It is the same thing and you know it, you can't deny it. I know the truth hurts your agenda, but it is what it is, just own what you support and defend.

I am so sick of the people who pretend that drag is a compliment to women.

Since when was being told you smell like 'fish' a compliment?

Or have big boobs

Repeatedly. I am GC - mostly - but it isn't my entire personality. I don't hate trans people. I don't wish them ill. I accept they exist and are entitled to exist in society just as much as everyone else. I won't be browbeaten by people who have forgotten their own decency into crossing my own boundaries of being a decent human being towards everyone.

This is my stance too Alcove 👍🏽

Drag race was on last night and I watched 20 mins before bed.

but it was actually the whole time the men doing some quiz “whose slept with a fellow queen” etc and then a fashion challenge to make a new outfit. They were all shown as men throughout.

so maybe they are updating it to be far more “we are male performers and don’t believe we are women at all”. Still not my cup of tea but overall it was just men enjoying dressing up fabulously.

Actually Lenny Henry did a stint in The Black and White Minstrels. Strange but true!

And that was the joke. It was meant to be hilarious that an actual black man was a minstrel. Because everyone knew that the minstrels were playing at blackface, and it was just a bit of fun to caricature others (sarcasm). Lenny Henry has in later years commented negatively on racism in the arts.

I can see my original post needed a sarcasm alert and the #sadtimes isn’t enough. 🫢 I’ll try and be more careful next time. Whats in my head doesn’t always translate to the written word.

Nobody in the B&W Minstrel Show was black.

Lovely to see the offensive tide of womanface starting to recede.

Weren’t there an attempt to cancel some women who called themselves “transwomen” on only fans as apparently the trans community thought it was offensive to TIM. So if women parodying TIM is offensive, surely men parodying women is more offensive, as women are an oppressed group and men are not?
