I'm surprised by people being angered by this. I remember when (in the early 2000s) girls and their families were fighting to wear trousers, because forcing the girls to wear knee-length skirts all year round was considered sexist and impractical. My school eventually let girls wear trousers in the autumn and winter terms, and I loved that, as I hated being forced into skirts.

From what I understand, the issue is that a large number of girls roll their skirts up to the point that they show their pants. Obviously, that’s not acceptable attire – nothing to do with boys, it wouldn’t be acceptable in an all girls’ schools with only female teachers for teenage girls to be wearing such incredibly short skirts. A school is a workplace.
People who say ‘how dare you blame girls’ is very strange, as it’s not boys who roll up the girls’ skirts, and the ones who are misogynist pricks are unlikely to harass girls more or less because of their clothing.

Making the option simply ‘smart black trousers’ means that girls should be able to find trousers that fit (women of all shapes and sizes manage to wear trousers), but I do think having a calf length skirt that doesn’t lend itself to being rolled should be an option too.

School trousers for girls never look nice. They are normally male trousers so very unflattering or if not they often are cut a bit too tight for most girls figures so they end up being stretched in the middle. It is very difficult to find well cut trousers unless you spend a lot of money on them.

personally aside from jeans I don’t often wear trousers. I find they dig in too much and I find them uncomfortable. I think I own about 1 pair of smart trousers. I am a skirt/dress person and so is my daughter. Her school gave all the girls the option of skirts or trousers and out of about 800 girls I reckon about 10 chose trousers.

I hate the fact that for hundreds of years women have been able to wear skirts and in the year 2026 we are being told that skirts are now immodest.

Girls roll up skirts at girls schools too. It’s because they usually come in a very unflattering length.
We did it at school too. I wouldn’t wear a knee length skirt back then and I wouldn’t now! And I’m not trying to attract anyone.

but in all seriousness - school uniform shops could make this with a school badge and it would be comfy. School polo underneath then a blazer or cardi on top. Lots of options for different weathers. And of boys welcome to wear them too.

Why is modesty considered negative? Some places you need to dress modestly. Work and school are some of those places.

It is not a sex discrimination thing. Boys aren't allowed to show their pants either in low trousers. And in most secondary schools boys aren't allowed to wear shorts!

The school expects families whose daughters already have a skirt to buy brand new trousers for just one year. The school would have been far more reasonable if they had mandated the new uniform for the year seven intake (assuming that Manchester doesn't have middle schools) and allowed existing girls to wear out their current uniforms prior to replacing them with trousers. That's how my school managed a uniform change.

In year eleven, my plain, unlogoed, old-style uniform school sweater went into holes at the elbow and the holes kept getting bigger. My parents wouldn't and couldn't spring for a new school-logoed replacement and we weren't allowed a cheaper plain replacement, so I sewed patches onto the elbows out of the sturdiest fabric I could find in the scraps bag. The patches were a different colour from the sweater. If I had been sent home for the holes or the patches, I'd have been in tears too. Luckily, my teachers recognised that sometimes, a family can go through a period of being poor, and a child's resourcefulness under that circumstance should not be punished.

Girls usually like wearing trousers because they're warmer, and parents get to buy fewer clothes. Can't see an issue with that. Denial of skirts is hardly a human rights issue.

Anyway, skirts aren't just for girls, my son wears them all the time - so do a lot of cis guys. Clothing isn't gender.

I agree that boys should get far better consent education. Predators will sexually harass and assault girls no matter what they wear.

Skirts don’t help with heavy periods because you are sitting on your backside and they get covered

trousers are only worse for that if you have them tight and who needs right trousers - that would get hot and uncomfortable quickly although does show your bum off better
