Marina Hyde in the Guardian today is asked who she would choose for Prime Minister. Her answer (and an excellent idea all-round) is J K Rowling. A nod, perhaps, to Hyde's opinion on current issues - and as far as I'm aware, she hasn't entered the debate previously. And this in The Grauniad too!

He started posting under that username last January. First he claimed to be a "cis" woman with three kids then to have two second cousins who were "trans". Now he claims to be NB with a "trans" child. No parent & no woman could be as nasty vindictive & spiteful to other parents. He is absolutely vile to those who really do have "trans' children.

I’m not sure of this, although I see what you mean. The result could still be a thorough attempt at cancellation, character assassination from (certain) Guardian colleagues, including book reviews saying it’s a good piece of work ‘stained’ by her wrongthink, open letters to get her sacked, calls to boycott The Rest is Entertainment, oh Richard Osman must be a transphobe by association, let’s drag him into this - a big load of pain-in-the-arse hoo-ha that could all have been avoided by not giving that simple answer.

Even saying it was a joke (and thus alienating people originally on her side and more likely to buy the book) wouldn’t wash with either side then. The stakes are too high either way. So it’s a calculated risk from Marina and she must have thought about how she’ll deal with the next steps.

There seems to be a massive shift in public opinion in the last year or so. My take is that the overreach of extreme intimidation and bullying plus the relentless targeting of the young by adults who evidently had no care or empathy for children has resulted in the general public finally seeing this for what it is.

Too many of the lanyard classes are of course still working in the civil service, universities, the charity sector etc where speaking out is career ending. For the rest of society us, people have started pointing out what's happening. Marina will be aware of this, plus organisations like the BBC acknowledging their previous bias.
All these small steps leading to people finally feeling free to speak the truth.

Ah I see what was said in a previous page has been deleted now. Knowing all the wonderfully wise women that are on this section of Mumsnet, I do believe that most wouldn't report these type of comments, as unlike Reddit differences of opinion are allowed on here (in relation to gender ideology specifically). So I wonder at It being deleted. I mean, it was abhorrent but these comments serve to let those who don't comment see the emotional manipulation that TRA posters post.

Is it likely to have been a self-report? Post this sort of stuff then when people rightly call it out, self-report, get it deleted then it's plausible deniability? I wouldn't put any such tactics past these TRA posters tbh.

It's possible Mumsnet deleted it for libelling JKR.

I don’t think this gives you any sign of what she personally thinks at all (although there’s every chance she is GC). She’s just very sardonic and enjoys poking the beast. This is the funniest thing she could think to write in response to that question, given our current culture, not what she necessarily actually believes.

I agree with this. I think she was being mischievous. She knew answering JKR to the question would provoke the reaction it did, but I also think MH is smart and can see the witch hunt against JKR for what it is.

Is it a book book? I love her writing and bought her last one only to discover it was a collection of her columns. I think she writes for TV shows now.

Perhaps. I remember this topic being discussed on her podcast a while ago, and she clearly articulated the GC position, so she does get it, even if she is not particularly invested in the debate.
