Parkrun comments giving me the rage

If I have to read one more time 'but parkrun is just meant to be fun' or 'you are only racing against yourself and your best time' I'm going to scream.

Why does that only apply to women?

If it's just a bit of fun there is absolutely no need for trans identified men to get a time or position either. They have the option to register as another gender or to just run and not register at all.

If it's all just fun and we moaning women should shut up, why do these arguments only apply one way?

No one is saying they can't run in whatever clothing/identity they like. Just that they shouldn't be recorded as women.

But somehow this is still wrong.

I thought I'd peaked long ago but this one is giving me the absolute rage.

Or... people just don't care. I run in our local one most weekends - as do my children and DP. It is literally just not an issue for the vast majority of people. Going hell for leather and attacking Parkrun is utterly batshit behaviour - it takes away focus from where we actually need single sex spaces.

It is literally just not an issue

Yet still they persist in sending emails telling people that they have come first in their category. Must be a technical error and not a blatant attempt to treat women less advantageously than men.

Cadeaukatze · 18/09/2026 16:50

It turns out that there are photos of my local parkrun last year. I have found the woman who came 1st. I think it could be a woman, the person is quite small and slight but is wearing a cap which obscures a lot of their face. But anyway, now I know what they look like, I will keep my eyes peeled at future parkruns.

I just feel like someone who is that good would have been good in her youth and people would know about her.

Actually, I’ve noticed people increasingly do care. I think people feel more comfortable voicing an opinion.

The other week I was at Parkrun and bumped into a friend who was there with his running club and I stayed for a coffee and chat afterwards. Someone bought the topic up and the consensus was that it’s grossly unfair to allow men to run in the women’s category - even at Parkrun. .

Really?

You think questioning when ‘first female’ is actually a male. That’s the batshit behaviour?

I mean, seriously? 😵‍💫

Because …

i) It is supposedly not a competition / Olympics,
ii) Apparently, cannot be ‘policed’,
iii) Some people are supportive of male people being treated as if they are female because kindness / respect / friends / belief.

and people have lost so much already with parkrun that women should not expect anything to change because if there is a change it can only be to the detriment of women due to i) and ii) so therefore should accept sex discrimination for the overall good of the organisation and making some male people feel better because of iii).

This I don't understand.

Why is anyone supporting this? It's ridiculous, unfair, disrespectful to women.

Why do we have people cheering this on?

This seems to partly sum up the situation :

As Claire Hallissey points out she got this email knowing that a male athlete was ‘1st female’.

So far because of political pressure we have lost from parkrun:

  1. Course records
Parkrun removed all course records from its website in 2024. This included:
  • Fastest male/female course times
  • Age‑graded course records
  • Age‑category course records
  • “Top 500 fastest” lists
These were deleted after campaign groups argued that transgender inclusion made the records “unfair” or “invalid”.
  1. Age‑category rankings
Previously, you could see:
  • Fastest times for each age group (e.g., VW45–49, JM10)
  • Where your time ranked nationally or globally
These tables were removed entirely. This was directly linked to pressure from groups claiming that self‑identified gender categories distorted female rankings.
  1. Historical athlete comparisons
Parkrun used to show:
  • How your time compared with others at your event
  • How your PB compared with national age‑group standards
  • Leaderboards for “most first‑place finishes”
All of these were removed. The organisation stated that competitive comparisons were inconsistent with its “non‑competitive ethos”, but the timing coincided with political pressure campaigns.
  1. Public visibility of top performers
Parkrun used to highlight standout performances:
  • Fastest finishers each week
  • Age‑graded high scorers
  • Event‑level “records broken this week”
These features were removed to avoid fuelling arguments about fairness in female categories.
  1. Gender‑based competitive framing
Parkrun previously displayed:
  • Male/female first finishers
  • Gender‑specific PB tables
  • Gender‑specific age‑grading comparisons
These were softened or removed as Parkrun tried to de‑emphasise competition during the political dispute.

Yes, we've increased equality but equality usually requires removing features that are interesting and used to give people a bit of pleasure.

There is zero chance they will swap from gender to sex because sex would be more controversial, not less. What they'll do is stop recording either and make the problem go away. Then Women will need to manually count the female appearing names above them to work out their position against other women.

In parkrun terms equality usually means removing features, because those feature are inherently unfair. Well yes, they're a tiny little bit unfair but it's a small price to pay to have them. I miss every single feature above despite rarely using them, they were nice to have.

I wonder how many people applauding the loss of these features as a blow for feminism are actually women who do parkrun?

I ran at ParkRun twice.
I stopped running when I realised what the position with tranwomen was.
I won't be returning until they run in the correct category or the categories are abolished.

However parkrun is a global organisation and has to comply with laws all over the world, including where self-ID is a thing, so we have to suck it up. But it's annoying none the less.

Self ID isn’t a thing in the UK though and Parkrun is very clear that it has different options in different countries. They don’t for example offer an ‘other’ (or however it is phrased) option in Malaysia.

Edited

That's interesting, I didn't know that. I've always taken the view that they had a one size fits all policy so it's tough because of Ireland/Australia/Canada/Germany etc. But that obviously isn't the case.

Global organisations cant cherry pick laws from across the world and apply them to every country.

They would be able to have self id male and female categories in countries with self id, but not in countries that dont. Its not difficult to apply different rules in different countries, they just cant compare the results as if they are equivalent.

If they are collecting and displaying sex information from participants, they need to have a reason to do it. If they are making it a 'put what you want' field for a few, they cannot justify collecting it from anyone.

It took me a minute or so to find the UK Parkrun records, so the usual suspects who say it isn't competitive must think we are stupid.

https://www.parkrunrecord.com/records/uk

Looking at those, it's clear why TIM attempted-murderer Lauren Jeska pretends he's female: over 17 minutes for his Aberystwyth female course record. The male records are often 15 to 16; sometimes faster. So he would be nowhere.
I would love an excellent female runner to go to Aberystwyth just to beat his 'record'....Nice part of the world...Any takers?! (I can't as I'm in the 27 minute range 🤣)

oldtiredcyclist · 12/09/2026 15:27

I have also noticed that transwoman Lauren Jeska (currently in a women's prison for attempted murder) holds the Aberystwyth women's record.

Someone beat our our age grade record by some way today. The person concerned has hardly done any parkruns and did a ridiculously fast time for their age. They are not listed on power of 10 either, which a fast athlete would be (along with lots of slower ones). I don't know the name, so I don't think she was an elite athlete in her youth.

Now she could have come from nowhere and be making a massive and rapid improvement.

However, there are other reasons why I think this woman cut the (multi-lap) course, or she's not actually a woman but I don't want to say more as it will out the course and potentially me as well.

It is very annoying. It does matter to actual female athletes, whether it's parkrun or not - parkrun is a gateway to the sport - not just for youngsters but also for Masters athletes. And it got Georgia Hunter Bell back into professional running and look at her now.

I should say that the records are still accessible on the parkrace app (and potentially the official parkrun one too but I don't have that one).

soupycustard · 12/09/2026 14:38

People - women included - have chosen to uphold the wants of some privileged males over the equal participation of females. In a patriarchy. Where females are already at a disadvantage. Where the males in question already have exactly the same human rights as everyone else as well as the extra EA rights relating to gender reassignment. This is what these people are trying to promote. More privileges for the already-privileged. Ffs.

So they remove these nice features to try to hide the fact that men are pretending to be women to boost their egos and the people completely to blame for this are women?

Can someone remind me of the rules of misogyny?

It really does show though, doesn't it, how far parkrun will go to include a group of male runners in a protected category that they should never have been allowed to access due to male testosterone generated advantages from before puberty.

And how far people will react in hope to keep some usability, even to the point of trying to convince female athletes to accept just a little bit of negative sex discrimination for the over all good.

It is all emotional manipulation. Parkrun has done this consciously and made deliberate decisions. They should acknowledge the full responsibility of using these emotional tactics. Yet people defend parkrun...

So another male person claims a position ahead of a female long distance Olympian runner at Parkrun in the female category.

Nothing to see here. At all.

And people wonder if there is a reason new female runners don’t feel welcome.

There really is a significant difference between ‘inclusion’ and making the events fair for all and therefore supporting female fair participation.

Igmum · 12/09/2026 10:13

cobaltchlorides · 05/09/2026 14:13

I am so passionate about women's participation in sport! I know you disagree with my opinions, but I don't want to be told that I'm not welcome in this discussion. Running needs strong women to assert their place - sports like trail running are still so. male. dominated. and we have a long way to go. I know my views about gender don't align with the typical Mumsnet consensus, but I think I've earned my stripes with regards to women's rights in running.

I’m late to this thread but I cannot believe you can say this and not see how your own actions are putting so many women off.

You’re passionate about attracting more women into sport but only so they can lose to your male friend so he will be happy.

Do you seriously - seriously - think more women will be attracted given your stance?

I wish you would rethink your approach for all those women out there your male friend and the other men running as women have hurt. Upthread you have had the opportunity to read an X thread detailing 50 men who run as women in Parkrun most taking times and places from women.

You probably haven’t read it. You’ll probably continue to prioritise your friend’s feelings over women’s achievements, fairness and feelings. You’ll probably continue to bemoan the fact that too few women participate in sport.

Dr Laura?

I don’t know who he is. I too noticed him
pop up posting replies to Fondofbeetles. And also yesterday having back and forth with Wesley Yang where he has just attempted the ‘but we call it a breast reconstruction for detransitioners when it is not really breast tissue anymore, so if you are such purist so as to reject using female language for a male person out of politeness, why use other inaccurate language.’?

To which I thought, well.. fuck. There was a breast there that had been surgically removed and it it being reconstructed as much as possible. There is no fucking comparison between that and a bloke who demands someone treat him as if he is female.

I am sure someone on twitter knows who he is, but he portrays himself as up for debate. He does seem to have his own interpretation on things.

I have just noticed similar arguments of ‘it’s not many’, ‘it’s inclusive’, and ‘it’s a charity doing many good things’ being used in support of allowing male people into Girlguiding as participants.
