'New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez gave us that when she literally laughed off a movement she had become the poster girl for live on telly. It was in the midst of an ABC News discussion on the excesses of 2020 progressives earlier this month that she shared a saying from a colleague: “Woke 1 was crazy!”'

Seems a significant shift.

‘Woke’ was a disaster – even the Left admits it

Key liberal figures like AOC may distance themselves from the movement, but their punitive orthodoxy had a chilling effect on free speech

And? I was a babysitter and a waitress before I turned 17. Big whoopy deal.

Yes what I’m saying is she went into politics from basically no corporate or relevant experience. So she may have had to make leaps and bounds in her learning much like all of us do when going from casual work to professional industries. Shes just skipped the whole in between experience.

AimsAndObjectives · 02/09/2026 21:59

To Riley Gaines, on womens' sport:
'Maybe if you channeled all this anger into swimming faster you wouldn’t have come in fifth.'

That was a nasty thing to say to another woman and a nasty way of saying it.

She was a barista who became a CW. Is she not allowed to develop politically and professionally and learn and grow from her beginning?

If someone realises that they have mistakenly backed a terrible, damaging, destructive ideology three years previously, then the human and honest thing to do would be to give a thoughtful and considered apology. Lolz and 'it was crazy' is not that. She has directly contributed to harm done, and has specifically attacked women who tried to stand up for women's rights.

'Maybe if you channeled all this anger into swimming faster you wouldn’t have come in fifth.'

To Nancy Mace on objecting to men using women's facilities:

''This is not just bigotry, this is just plain bullying,' Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said.'

And again:

'Lastly, we wouldn’t need to talk about bathrooms at all if we acted like adults, washed our hands + minded our own business instead of trying to clock others. Going by track record, I’d feel safer in a bathroom w/ a trans woman than a powerful male executive any day of the week.'

She then called a gamer on Twitch to help him raise money for Mermaids.

I really like her but "She was a barista who became a CW" is a misrepresentation of who and what she is.

Her dad was an architect. They have an apartment in NY and a second home isn Westchester County.

She went to Boston College.

She interned for Kennedy.

She is very clearly a hard worker, and smart to boot, but a poor inner city girl she was not.

Father's Death: Her father died of cancer in 2008 when she was a sophomore in college at Boston University.

Post-College Struggle: His death led to major financial difficulties and a long legal battle over his estate. After graduating during the Great Recession, Ocasio-Cortez worked as a waitress and bartender to help support her family and prevent foreclosure on their home.

Indeed, though maybe acceptable if you are desperate. I agree with the original premise that the % of successful outcomes is not adequately and clearly stated, but starting with a figure of 76,000 and taking that down to 200-odd births is also misleading. You can argue that 1.7% of eggs thawed becoming a baby is an ethical issue, but that isn't what's going to be uppermost in the minds of the women trying to get pregnant.

I also wonder to what extent the 28% miscarriages (80 from 288 pregnancies - yes, very high) is discussed with the women considering this route. It could even be a matter of policy to discuss rather than publish

'HFEA figures show that, as an average across all age groups, just 2% of all thawed eggs ended up as pregnancies and 0.7% resulted in live births in 2018. For each IVF cycle, this gives a 27% chance on average of a birth for those who froze their eggs before the age of 35 and a 13% for those who froze their eggs after this age. The most common age for egg freezing in the UK is 38 years old.'

My U.S friend tells me they want to totally re-write the constitution...is this correct?

Yes, it is correct. While the constitution can be amended, it’s very difficult to do.

I think the key figure is that from 288 pregnancies, 80 were lost, though.

That's a very high figure.

'Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ... literally laughed off a movement she had become the poster girl for live on telly. It was in the midst of an ABC News discussion on the excesses of 2020 progressives earlier this month that she shared a saying from a colleague: “Woke 1 was crazy!”

Ocasio-Cortez’s tone is important – masterful, from a political perspective. It’s the indulgent tone of a woman pointing to a 50-year-old picture of herself in stirrup leggings and a batwing jumper. “Wasn’t Eighties fashion crazy!”

Only we’re not talking about statement sleeves here. We’re not talking about a garment you can shrug off and giggle at retrospectively. (Just six years ago, this woman wanted to defund the police). No, we’re talking about a punitive orthodoxy that had a chilling effect on free speech, that encouraged Medieval-style public shamings and cancellations and robbed people of their livelihoods.

We’re talking about a dangerous dogma that – in allowing ideology to outrun evidence in children’s medicine, of all places – encouraged experimentation on six-year-olds. It wilfully put girls and women in danger, made a mockery of women’s sport, prioritised symbolic gestures over practical solutions and turned competitive victimhood into a national sport'

I've just re-read this
"According to the latest results from the five years up to the pandemic, 75,958 eggs were subjected to thawing after freezing. Of these—I will round up the figures for speed—13,000 thawed, 11,400 were fertilised, 7,257 produced an embryo, 1,695 were considered suitable for an embryo transfer, 288 of the women got pregnant after transfer, 205 gave birth, and 80 pregnancies were lost as a result of miscarriage."

1,695 embryos were considered suitable, but it doesn't say how many women in total. There’ll usually be more than 1 suitable embryo per woman after each fertilisation run, am I right? So we don't know from these figures the % of successful transfer. Have I got that wrong?

'1,695 were considered suitable for an embryo transfer, 288 of the women got pregnant after transfer, 205 gave birth'

My (very rough) understanding is that you'd have yes, more than one embryo implanted to give better odds of a pregnancy taking. Friends have ended up with multiples precisely because of this.

So yes, that would be a key statistic. Let me have a dig.

American here. This is a big part of it. Woke 1 clearly put Trump into office. The problem is that Woke 2/the DSA agenda is likely to be just as repellent to mainstream voters and is even more extreme (abolishing the Senate, eliminating the direct election of the president, limiting the Supreme Court's powers, etc.).

nauticant · 02/09/2026 17:41

The most interesting thing to me is that Woke 2, presented as it is in terms of a fairness for all economic agenda, has very strong support among the downwardly mobile university educated privileged class. They're a decently sized group and are as high propensity for voting as activated Trump voters.

MissConductUS · 02/09/2026 17:24

nauticant · 01/09/2026 16:14

My reading between the lines is that US progressives have shifted their agenda and Woke 2 is coming (in the form of the Democratic Socialists of America) and this time they're hoping to win the game having learned from their mistakes.

nauticant · 02/09/2026 17:12

To my mind the sensible position to take is that even though AOC and her fellow travellers are strongly opposed to Trump, it doesn't mean they can't be criticised, especially when they have a track record of more than a decade of promoting utterly bonkers ideas. And, if there's a sustained change in the way the wind is blowing, are going to try to gaslight us into believing they never actually promoted.

Woah, that scenario was always there. The kkk predated Kamala Harris by quite some time, they assassinate their (Democrat) presidents, they have separatist militia camped out in woods, there is lots that is awesome about the US, BUT they sure do bring the crazy and a whole lot of right wing crazy and you cannot blame woke for that without sounding just about as crazy.

I'm not blaming anyone, I'm offering an overview of the situation as it is now. The one that has led Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to suggest that positions she previously promoted she now finds a bit "crazy".

99bottlesofkombucha · 02/09/2026 14:03

Shortshriftandlethal · 02/09/2026 09:37

The scenario you describe in the United States came about because of extreme over-reach and general ludicrousness emanating from the what is now termed the american 'progressive' 'Left'. That Kamala Harris ran for president vowing that the state would pay for the 'gender transitions' of violent men in U.S prisons and then place them in womens jails. That professors at numerous U.S universities were targeted and hounded for years ( Peter Boghassian, for exampel). That Democrat senators claimed that "no-one could know what a woman was" without a medical degree ( and even those with medical degrees claimed not to know either)

That Trump has simply reversed the gears doesn't say anything meaningful about that fact, nor does it point to the way forward.

That's how it's presented but under the surface much if the loony stuff remains, as far as the adherents are concerned. The Woke 1 promoters, whether the true believers or the cynical opportunists like AOC, are looking for a new home and they're hoping to find it in the DSA movement.

I agree! They haven't really changed their spots; they are just looking for a newer and maybe more palatable costume.

Yes, they want to focus on what they perceive as economic socialism rather than on the woke cultural agenda because they have seen how well it has worked out for Mamdani in New york.
