Today was another Parkrun Saturday and like every weekend the achievements by women was demoted by men running in the female category.

We are hoping to change this! In only a few weeks time, we will debut Reality Rules Runners UK at Parkrun. We hope that many hundreds (hopefully thousands) of you will join us to send a clear and strong statement to Parkrun about the huge support there is for fairness and sex-based categories at their events.

All sports events are responsible for putting on fair events. This includes free, volunteer run, community events like Parkrun.

So please tell people about Reality Rules Runners UK, as we are hoping to attract lots more supporters before our debut at Parkrun on 3 October.

Thank you! 🙏

I’ve already seen this.

I’ve ordered my T-shirt. It’s free shipping this weekend. I will be wearing it on the side but must admit I am a bit nervous about getting abuse. And as we all know, despite the both sides argument, it only ever comes from one side.

Yes that is exactly what they mean.

Here is how you make a group. They reserve the right not to approve group names. I expect if parkrun hadn’t allowed it the publicity would have been worse for them.

Reality Rules Runners have sent out an email requesting that you don't register on Park Run as a member of their running group until a later date.

I expect they mean don't sign up until after the Saturday before the 3rd of Oct? So that the 3rd Oct is the first run.

CroatiaSailing · 04/09/2026 17:25

I think it is because they want to make a big splash on the day and are aiming to have a big inaugural week. They are taking some time to gather support so that they can hit the ground running on 3rd October. It is the parkrun anniversary weekend which is part of their thinking. They have put out a warning that people will be watching the group as some have joined early so some pressure, yes. The group already exists within the parkrun system and someone must have approved it as you can’t just make a group you have to ask parkrun to do it for you.

That's interesting. I wonder if they are experiencing pressure behind the scenes.

But a bit sad way to start a new project.

Well I assume they're mostly women. Men are less likely to volunteer their time for free (and yes, I know NAMALT, not my Nigel etc).

Depends on the sport or activity in my experience. Out of the dozen or so volunteer coaches down my rowing club only two are women despite the club membership being 50 / 50. All the youth football and rugby coaches and assistants I saw were men.

I'd be really interested to see a breakdown of the sex of volunteers, too.

Why?

ArabellaScott · 04/09/2026 12:43

What's a bit depressing is that it can just reflect everyday society and still be reliant on women doing the dogsbody stuff. Nobody will even notice.

Sexism is standard.

Gender radios for running/walking and volunteering

Interesting. The numbers aren’t far off 50:50 for volunteering (majority female) but there is a more significant majority of men running and walking. Run directors are majority men.

Locally/anecdotally I would say that the volunteers I know enjoy it for its own sake and make friends that way. A significant minority of regular volunteers never do the course. This a a mixture of men and women.

Thanks, that's really interesting. They've not done anything on 'female participation' on there since this 2022 article.

'Let’s start with the facts. In 2019, 1.12 million people in the UK, Ireland, Australia and South Africa registered for parkrun, over 600,000 of whom were female. The female majority in registrants is evident across all four major territories, ranging from 53% females in the UK, to 57% in Ireland and South Africa. This far outweighs the population ratio which in all four territories is around 51% female. In isolation, this statistic implies that parkrun is more appealing to females. But perhaps the biggest hurdle is yet to come. You’ve registered for parkrun, now you’ve got to participate.

On a given Saturday in 2019 in the UK, the average proportion of female walkers and runners was 44%, a 9% drop from the female registrants. But what does this stark difference between the female share at registration and participation actually tell us?

Almost a third of registrants for parkrun never take part in a 5k event. When we look closer at this pool who are yet to participate, we see that more of them are female. The overall result is that the 53% female majority at registration drops to 51% of all who go on to actually complete a 5k parkrun. So what started as an event more appealing to female registrants, now has the reverse effect upon completing the registration form.'
...
'We found that twice as many females (40% of respondents) than males (20% of respondents) experienced psychological barriers which prevented them from walking or running in a parkrun event.'
...
'in all parkrun countries males attend parkrun more often than females, with a ratio of 56:44'
...
'we are seeing a reduction in the share of female registrants and walk/run participants of about 3% globally.'
...
'In terms of volunteering specifically, globally more women than men volunteer at parkrun, carrying out 53% of volunteering in 2021. However, when we drill down into the type of roles, we see that more men fill the Event and Run Director roles than women, with 48% of Run Directors across the world of parkrun in 2021 being female. '

See, this doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

To an outsider, it looks to me like Parkrun is complacent about the fact that it is using women's time and effort to prop up men's egos. That goes wider than the 'trans' issue.

All these people saying how would you enforce it are just hiding behind the question because they don’t want to address the fairness issue.
If we saw someone doing two laps instead of three at parkrun, we would do something about it. We wouldn’t just say “oh it’s too hard to enforce”. (Perhaps they identified as having run three laps when they only did two!)

If cheating is too hard to enforce, we should get rid of the age limit for junior parkrun as well.

Honestly, I’m so sick of all these stupid questions! They are popping up on Facebook and X. People don’t really care about the fairness aspect at all which is the premise we start from.

I’ve been called a c* and blocked by TRAs on X in the last few days simply for asking for fair opportunities for women and girls. Both men, of course. This is just another very convenient way for them to manifest their misogyny.

Yes. Those people declaring it is too hard to enforce don’t realise that there is little ‘enforcement’ done on any policy or law at the time. It doesn’t stop there being the protection in the first place though.

It is a replica of the argument we see around single sex provisions. Perhaps people have seen the argument and thought it convincing without actually thinking past the superficial level. It is not a plausible reason at all.

There was a American TRA being interviewed on a show saying he’d be happy for his daughter to lose to a TIM in sports because she already had so much privilege and it’s not a big deal if she loses. Wonder if his daughter feels the same way…l

Says it all, doesn't it. He's prioritising a man he doesn't even know over his own daughter. I wonder how she feels, not just about potentially losing a race, but about her father's betrayal of her rights.

That Is not what is being proposed and would open up ParkRun and the volunteers who turn up every Saturday to a lot of potential risk. It would also be impossible: ParkRun doesn’t use race numbers so how would you even identify someone who was cheating?

What is being proposed is simply a rule change and setting the expectation that the rules will be honoured. All of ParkRun works on the honour system.

If I'm marshalling on the last corner and notice the first man comes in at 18:00 but that man is recorded as a female in results then, yes, I will be emailing the local core team and parkurn HQ about it.

It’s so annoying that they can’t see that sex and gender are not the same. I register my sex under their banner for gender and they think that is tolerable and creates a loophole . I think anyone who thinks that is either stupid or likes porn with men with boobs and watches it far too much.

They can see that.

It just suits them to pretend otherwise

Parkrun presents itself as a charity, relies on volunteers to operate, and has staff taking six figure salaries.

Parkrun claims its just a fun run but publishes times and rankings.

Parkrun insists its 'inclusive' but actively attacks and excludes women with gender critical views.

I'm seeing a pattern.

Firstly, the way they've written this makes it sound like this is happening at every parkrun across the land. I'd like to see their stats on how often this if happening, or suspected to be happening, because in all my years of being a parkrunner, Run Director, touring many different events, and being on a number of different parkrun social forums I have only heard of one individual being reported for this so it definitely isn't impacting many people's weekly parkrun results. parkrun scrapped the stats of things like course records and male/female first finishers a while back (although they're still there if you know how to find them).
When you register there's the option to select from male/female/another gender identity/prefer not to day. Now I guess that trans people should be picking "another gender identity" but if they identify as male or female then that's probably what they're going to select.
Also, the majority of people won't actually know or care if their gender position is one place lower than it should rightfully be and given the inaccuracies in some results it might not be 100% anyway. People can also lie about their age should they wish to.
Ultimately, it's a volunteer led event, there's no prize money for "winning" (technically it's a run not a race) and you can register under any persona without being verified or run without being registered.
Yes, i agree that the female category should have females being compared equally against each other, but it's parkrun not the fucking Olympics or even a paid for race!!

Well ... I am old and my favourite part of ParkRun is the Age Grading Button. Youngsters can whizz round in 20 minutes or less and I can still beat them with my age advantage.

Mycatisfab · 04/09/2026 09:12

It's Schrödinger's race/fun run. Simultaneously not important for women and extremely important for men

Rollingpinofdoom · 04/09/2026 07:28

iwishitwouldstartraining · 04/09/2026 07:16

Wonder where he stands on women who identify as trans competing?

They have the choice of not being competitive against men or forgoing treatment and competing as women, but people have different expectations of them for some reason…

Funnily enough, he didn’t mention them once. I don’t think he gives a flying fuck about women however they identify apart from as emotional support animals to men

I saw that and I was horrified for that daughter.
