Why are the Independent publishing an article on a fun run? How do they even know about this? Because nobody cares, right?

I always find it odd when people says 'it's just a fun run', because it suggests that they know nothing about parkrun, even sometimes while taking part.

Did you not know that parkrun emails race positions to all participants, with comparisons based on age and sex? That each parkrun lists everyone's results in order? If the ability to compare isn't important to anyone why don't they just stop?

If it is important, why shouldn't women have equally informative information from an organisation that receives public funding and uses publicly funded spaces?

I do not think OP is spreading vitriol.

I participate in parkrun and I’m a biological female. I would hope that the categories and statistics are accurate. I full well know it’s not a competition, but why have the stats and announce “fastest runners” on the pages then?

It’s just another pocket of society where women’s right to their own category is being encroached by men. When will this end?

If you know nothing about parkrun (an apolitical, free, fun run NOT race) why have you come straight here to spread vitriol and try and spoil it for those that love it?

As someone who runs every week, could not care less about what other people around me are doing or how they identify, everyone is there for a run and a bit of company

I agree, a level playing field is not too much to ask for is it, there's a reason there's a female category, which should only have female people in it. The fact that some people don't get the obvious is mindboggling.

There comes a point for all runners when they're going to become slower so by 'competing against themselves' they're sure to lose. I took up running 20 years ago aged 40, I'm slower now than I was 15 years ago but I'm fast for a 60 year old woman.

Results based on age and sex enable me to compare myself to runners the same sex and age as me. A man running in the women's category ruins that.

If nobody cares then nobody will care if they scrap the comparative stats.

However parkrun is one of those things were I can't get worked up about because you yourself say who and what you are, you are just you improving yourself every run.

All that is being asked is that the categories make sense, so that they don't discriminate against women. Nobody is expecting volunteers to wander around doing cheek swabs.

I've never even cared to look at how other people beyond those I run with have done, and sometimes look in wonderment at who came first when they flew past me towards the end of my first lap and go "bloody hell speedy did it in 17.23, I have no chance" their age and sex are usually the last thing I care about.

If you don't like Parkrun rules, go set up your own thing.

Cannibalising Parkrun doesn't help anyone.

Parkrun receives public funding and makes use of public spaces and so should not discriminate against women.

Parkrun expect people to follow the rules that they set. All that is being asked is that they set fair rules.

In Parkrun anybody can take whatever substances they want. There's no testing.

Sounds good. If you don't like Parkrun rules, go set up your own thing.

It used to work perfectly well before men realised they could get a competitive edge by registering as women: people are mostly honest and their sex is obvious.

Serious female runners might gravitate to the latter, to avoid the problem of men dominating in both 'gender' categories, but it would be a choice.

Or are you saying that men would lie to run in the female 'sex' category? Surely not!

The stewards need to be strict, and not worry too much about offending people.

They aren't expecting anyone to verify people's sex. They are just asking them to set the expectation. As you say, it's not a secure system and people could e.g. lie about their age, but that would be frowned upon. This is the same.

Trans men don't all automatically take testosterone. Trans men who want to take part in completive sport (like the skier Elis Lundholm) can only delay treatment while they are competing and qualify as women because, even with testosterone they would not qualify as men.

However, as they could compete in an open category at park run there would be no requirement for them to compete as women.

They would need to abolish the women's category and just have runners. I don't see that any other system would work.

At the moment you fill in an online registration form and get given a barcode. You show the barcode at the end with a position code you're given when you finish. It is not exactly a secure system. Anybody could give their barcode to an Olympic athlete and get their time. All times need to be taken with a pinch of salt. The proper competitive runners, the ones at the front (a LONG way from me!) are going to be in official running clubs with verification checks in place. They should care about those races and not fun runs.

I hope they get a big turn out, what they're asking for is a simple thing, the fact that Park Run won't keep a fair and accurate record is a disgrace.
