I'm not very educated, married to a good man, live a quiet life in a small village in the south west, have good relationships with males in my family who are good men. (Grand/Father, uncles, sons, son in law) and have strong women in my life (mother, daughter daughter's in law, nieces etc).
Just setting the scene really..

Well it all kicked off this afternoon at my house. (When I say kicked off I mean a quick argument lasting about half an hour! Not EastEnders worthy..)

I have to say I had a few. Not many because I don't really drink but ..

Somehow it was bought up about Gen Z being offended about something that my kids/and partners grew up with (ages 29-36…). A sketch in Little Britain. Somehow the conversation turned to trans stuff and eventually turned to transwomen.

Anyway I bought up the case of transwomen playing in the (WNBA? ) basketball and how some men are pretending to be women to join. Showing solidarity with the woman having to play with 6ft 10in transwomen? I've probably got details wrong but hopefully you can understand?

Well it got heated.
SIL Sort of agreed but said it's rare. I said even one transwomen taking a female space is one too many. I talked about transwomen in female toilets. How do we know who the 'safe' ones are. It got on to male violence v female violence.

My Dil who works with victims of DV agreed and was quoting statistics about calls to DV helplines rising during the world cup.

My son got very heated and did the usual whataboutery. But what about women who do the same?! Trans men in male sports? Transmen who use mens toilets/changing rooms.

I said it's very rare but he continued to get riled when I started spouting some stuff I'd read on MN.
Mediocre men who fail in mens teams taking places from women, men invading women's spaces for fetish reasons. I said do you ever enter the toilets thinking whether you are safe? (Surprise that he didn't even know what I meant? And surprised when I told him I did!). His GF then agreed with me. I said you have no skin in this game (males taking female places in sport, jobs and prizes) and never will!
He got heated and continued with the whataboutery but I held my ground.

Told him about the transwomen who invade female changing rooms (I encountered one myself) and how would he feel if his grandma had to deal with a semi naked man who was getting kicks by humiliatingly women.

SiL got it and eventually DS got it too. These are normal hardworking men.
Anyway we left it at that but both of them said they didn't know half of what I'd said.

I read a lot on this thread on MN and want to say thank you for educating me. I can't help many people to understand but I think I got 2 men today to think a bit more about it.

I used to explain it thus;

Sex is knowing you have a baby boy or girl.

Gender is feeling slightly uncomfortable that your son is desperate to do ballet.

Heggettypeg · 03/09/2026 23:14

Looking back, I don't remember encountering "gender" for "sex" much in speech until relatively recently, but was aware of it from books. It felt more literary, or euphemistic, or sometimes a bit arch and facetious. ( This is aside from its use as a grammatical term, which was normal.)

The "gender identity" meaning I only became aware of in connection with gender ideology.

I'm wondering if there's also an American element in the use of gender as a common synonym for sex, which might also have influenced usage over here, but gradually and unevenly. Has it been more usual over there?

When and where did "gender reveal parties" for babies begin?

Lins77 · 03/09/2026 22:48

I was thoroughly confused about the difference, if any, between sex and gender until fairly recent years. I more or less thought they were interchangeable terms. Only since becoming aware of the rise of gender identity ideology have I figured out what the difference actually is.

Well that’s told me! My experiences and memories of being a child in the 70s and 80s are clearly all wrong. Maybe I’m so old that I’ve got dementia?

I also grew up with 'gender' being a polite word for 'sex', with no concept of identity being thrown in. The use of the word gender was certainly not "post the entryism of queer politics into universities". Once it replaced Women's Studies to become Gender Studies it was a different animal, and being used in a different way. In law it is more important to be precise than to spare blushes so yes, the Sex Discrimination Act used the word sex not gender.

I don't think I lived in any societal enclave.

MagpiePi · 03/09/2026 21:45

IwantToRetire · 03/09/2026 20:19

I dont think this is true. It may have happened in some enclaves in society, but given that the UK passed the SEX discrimination act in 1975 it clearly isn't universally true.

And in 1875 despite the alternative society challenging primness etc., by and large mainstream society stuck to conventional norms.

ie women at work were discriminated against because of there sex.

The big change or gradual change to the use of the word gender was post the entryism of queer politics into universities. ie that manage to get rid of the then still quite new Women's Studies and they became Gender studies.

Most people in society didn't use the word gender. It was some weird concept to do with verbs and nouns and things!

Did the women who changed the terms ‘sex’ to ‘gender’ give reasons for doing so?

I'm old enough to remember a time when the word 'sex' meant sexual intercourse and 'gender' was a more polite word to use when referring to men and women, then all the trans nonsense came along and 'gender' became associated with identity divorced from biological reality. Maybe those women still felt a bit awkward using the word 'sex'? But even so, once it was explained then they shouldn't have kept changing it back.

This made me laugh! So they had no logical reason for doing it.

I remember one person just blinking at me, like she'd gone into some sort of 'press Ctrl/Alt/Delete to reboot' mode.

The Madeleine Albright quote “There is a special
place in hell for women who don’t help other women” has always resonated with me. It is probably why I find it so annoying and sad that vast numbers of women swallowed the line that a man in a ghastly dress, demanding his rights to be addressed as a woman and access women’s spaces, were more important than a biological woman’s. How does that actually make sense!?

6ate9 · 03/09/2026 12:21

Shedmistress · 03/09/2026 12:17

I believe the most convincing argument was 'wibble wibble'.

Lins77 · 03/09/2026 12:00

Yes me too. People often felt a bit embarrassed using the word "sex". And "sex" as a question on forms would provoke jokey responses like "yes please"!

I feel we have moved beyond that, however.

We don’t seem to have moved on far enough.
Ultrasounds reveal biological sex, not a future person’s ‘gender identity’.

Shedmistress · 03/09/2026 12:17

6ate9 · 03/09/2026 10:23

Women are the ones who are disadvantaged by all this, so why do so many support it?

Is it just because they want to ‘be kind’?

Sorry to jump in but I realised when I became old & therefore no longer attractive to men, that suddenly I was no longer worth their listening too

oddly when I was young and fuckable they hung off my every word....

Thanks. If men think they are getting sex, they will listen!!

Theeyeballsinthesky · 03/09/2026 11:45

6ate9 · 03/09/2026 11:42

@viques Do you think women are treated all their lives as if they are not quite worth listening to?

Well done OP and others who are scattering fertile seeds of common sense.

It is quite worrying that in a few of the posts the same issues came up, that the men in question had “ never considered” what the problems are for women if single sex spaces are not respected. So all the hundreds of miles of scrolled stories and forests of newsprint have apparently just passed over the heads of many men, nothing to do with them, pass on by. How on earth are we going to get men to realise what women are saying if they aren’t even taking notice of what we are saying, it’s great that we are educating them one at a time, but blimey , it’s going to take a heck of a long time to get through to all of them, or even to a decent percentage of them.

As much as I agree with you I don't know things that don't affect me until someone points it out too.

Obviously not as important but it's like when women are posting scan pictures and asking if anyone can see the gender. I used to correct but give up now.. like reporting fakes to Vinted!

That used to annoy me too! And the gender reveal parties!

namechange62 · 03/09/2026 10:50

6ate9 · 03/09/2026 10:40

Thanks! That explains why some women night not like using the word sex. Like you said, once @Shedmistress had explained they should have left it.

Well done OP! I'm not very good in debate (i only think of what i should have said 2 hrs after!) so IM really impressed you held your ground and might have even persuaded them!

It was much easier because I was holding my ground with my DS. I can't imagine (and truly thank)the women and men who have lost so much because they stood up to angry TRAs and captured corporations.
They deserve our humble thank yous.

The people in the agency that wanted to collect data on 'gender' were all female.

So were about 90 odd percent of the people that changed the field back to 'gender'.

Honestly, you could not make it up. The whole of the training and development industry are so totally captured, just like every other 'government funded in one way or other' industry.

Women are the ones who are disadvantaged by all this, so why do so many support it?

Is it just because they want to ‘be kind’?

Shedmistress · 03/09/2026 09:56

Back in 2018 I landed a role as managing about 25 ish million of UK gov money and the organisation we had hired to do the evaluation kept changing the title of my data gathering spreadsheet from 'sex' to 'gender'. I kept changing it back. We argued and argued and my point was that in the industry it was the female sex that was an under represented group and that is what we needed to capture. They did not or would not get it. As a woman who worked in said industry for 20 years, against all the fucking shit thrown at me on a daily basis by men of all ages, I completely resented this, they'd not stepped a foot onto a construction site in their lives.

So I scoured the internet for a form that the government agency in question used that recorded 'sex', the old ILR form before the madness began.

And sent it the hired agency, to prove that it was indeed 'sex' that needed to be captured.

We then agreed that we could use that term.

So I sent it out to the contracted suppliers.

And lo and behold, every single one of them changed it.

Next funding round, I changed it back and made them all complete the goddam spreadsheet on fucking TEAMS so that I could change that fucker back every time I fucking saw it.

Still angry about it as you can see.

And yes it is the FUCKING HILL I WILL DIE ON, bearing in mind the FUCKING ENERGY I SPENT WORKING ON CONSTRUCTION SITES EVERY FUCKING DAY DEALING WITH MEN AND THEIR SHIT.

#Not All Men. I quite liked some of them. Some are still my friends.

It’s definitely women like you that we have to thank. These people ran ‘roughshod’ over you, but they met their match. You sound amazing and strong. Thank you!
