It's awful how many porn videos these days contain some form of violence, be it strangulation, slapping or hair pulling. Always male on female violence too (unless S&M). It's getting too normalised. I've seen shows such as Love Island where the guy sometimes has his hand on the woman's throat when kissing her. We definitely all need to educate our young people that this is not normal, and they don't have to accept it as part of a sexual relationship.

Agree. I was shocked that the stroke happened days after the strangulation and not during the act. Its frightening that this is being normalized.

Speaking to DB the other day (related matter) and he says his son has withdrawn his DC from sex ed (sexuality and relationship ed) because they are teaching gender woo and also that what most would consider kinks and dangerous are normal sex. So it's not just porn DC are getting this message from. School sex ed needs looking at.

I’m in my forties and all my friends feels the same as you (though worry about our daughters entering f this world) but my friends in their early thirties say choking is just a part of regular sex now, everyone expects it and you can refuse it but if you don’t explicitly ask for them to refrain then men will randomly do it. The normalisation of all this in the space of less than a decade is absolutely shocking.

Afaik in the UK now the perpetrator cannot claim strangling resulting in death was part of consensual sex - it's not a defence.

Whatever the actual motivation in this truly appalling case the rough sex gone wrong excuse is definitely a huge danger, even if it was actually the case you still do have to wonder why this idea that this is what sex involves has taken hold and the only conclusion I can come to is the type of porn and the sheer availability and normalisation of it.

In the days I used porn it certainly wasn't violent, and yes I am not denying it was still harmful in that it objected women, but what is now being seen as mainstream to many young boys, and unfortunately also young girls, is not just socially harmful but absolutely physically dangerous.

You don't have to be the parent of daughters to worry about this but my goodness being so does intensify the feelings.

I can't see an easy answer, but I am sure that what answer there is surely has to not only equip young women in how to protect themselves but also educate young boys that this is beyond just bad behaviour.

The rough sex argument has been used too many times by men getting away with murdering women and men (a lot of gay killers have used this excuse too).

I am nearly 60 and a good school friend of mine died the same way Michael Hutchence did. That act only involved him. He was a beautiful boy, so much to live for. I can assume murder because she was murdered. He killed her, and anyone who strangles someone to death should be tried for murder, regardless of the circumstances. Calling it rough sex gone too far minimises it in my opinion.

Just because he is having sex with her doesn't mean that all common sense and morality goea out of the window.

Of bloody course she didn't consent to being strangled to death. But she may have consented to rough play, which can easily get out of hand. Also, as Coronation Street is currently showing, severe damage can be done with little pressure on the throat, so it might not be as violent as you assume.

It's a very sad situation, but you cannot automatically assume it's murder, because our children are being influenced all over the place online with cutesy "choke me Daddy" memes, and books written about violent sex (50 Shades, anyone?), and are being made to think it's ok. Not only ok, but sensual, and loving! It's no wonder some of them choose to try it. And it's horrific when it goes wrong!

Unfortunately society has allowed many of the "don't kink shame" porn addicts to influence sex ed in schools. Not all schools obviously but there have been countless incidents of age inappropriate porn soaked sex ed materials produced for schoolchildren by queer theory groups and others - all amplified by children's unsupervised access to social media.

After endless complaints from parents and responsible teachers this has finally been rolled back with the new DfE guidelines prioritising safeguarding and being much more responsible. Sadly it's too late for some young people who've been groomed into believing that "breathplay" is a harmless activity with young women being gaslit into accepting whatever brutal pornified behaviour is demanded of them.

I think younger women say they do to look cool. I'm a member of a female only car club. A fair few of our younger members have bumper stickers with slogans such as 'If you're going to fuck me from behind, at least pull my hair and choke me'.
