The small community of Millport is to have an LGBT+ pride. Thoughts?

Millport is on Cumbrae (don't confuse with Cumbria)- a small island on the West of Scotland coast, population not much over 1,000 with a lot of elderly. It's the only town on the island so most people generally just say Millport. As one of the more Southern islands and its small size it is popular for tourists and cycling.

So they are going to have their first ever pride on Sep 12th. Pride events usually happen in cities so it's unusual for one to take place in a small island with a lot of elderly and Christian residents. Some on social media are complaining the "ideology is being pushed on small island communities" whilst others are saying Ayrshire is a decade behind Glasgow in terms of LGBT acceptance with men or boys being targeted even for discreetly holding hands.

I wonder if the prospective attendees will be given information about the significant and important difference between being LGB and T+.

If Pride has yet to reach this island, it would be a perfect opportunity to do so.

On the island's facebook, eveidently controlled by the alphabet mafia, anyone questioning why this event is now suddently "needed" on this island, and anyone criricising the T+ alphabet soup, has been banned and their comments and links to information have been removed.

Usual modus operandi. No questions or debate allowed.

If 1/10 of us are gay, then the community has at least 100 people who may wish to parade, especially the older generations who were actually discriminated against and know why pride exists.

😅
It SO doesn't

I'm on Millport, and with 20+ years connection to the island. Grew up just over the water from the island. I know the area and the people.

I can tell you this much. The native islanders - most of them families who've been here for generations, and the elderly west of Scotlanders who have retired here, most of whom have been desperate their whole working lives to get to retire here, and the most frequent island visitors - don't want this event.

But they don't want to have to deal with the people behind the event.

The people behind this are not from the island. They are seen as an annoying, hyper woke pestilence, doing the usual meddling and imposing that incomers do, and best ignored.
No-one wants anything to do with them, except the few other incomers.

The island businesses will take their money tomorrow, and tolerate them. But aside from the one pub known locally to be gay friendly, where the flags would be expected - on this night before the event, there are no flags on the streets of the town, and only a few windows with small A5 size posters.

If there are any numbers tomorrow, the majority will have been boated in from elsewhere. They will not be islanders.

Troon surely!

We stayed in Milport earlier this year - it was lovely. There’s a cathedral and a few churches on Cumbrae, tiny though it is.

Its almost like OP hasn't ever been to the west coast of Scotland and is describing a far away tribe deep in the mists of uncivilsation.

It's Millport. It's not the fucking Wickerman.

😂😂😂😂

I actually Loled.
The kids all go to school in age mainland ffs, and Largs is a perfectly ordinary town, similar to the one I live in, in the area.

Surrey Pride deserved to collapse and never be resurrected. [Shudders]

True. The Kingston one was a very mild affair by what I saw on social media. Mostly teenage girls and mums with little kids.

There are several. Most of them are a tiny handful of locals swelled by a modest crowd of professional Pride attenders who travel from further afield, including the inevitable lanyards.

Strenuous efforts are being made to keep Pride going. The grim determination is apparently in inverse correlation to the colourfulness of the gathering.

Locals don't really care much, as far as I can tell. So long as they don't hold up the traffic.

Surrey Pride collapsed but nearby Kingston Upon Thames had their first - i think some towns are seeing the commercial possibilities. As they are starting from scratch they can do it at a much lower key/cost level whereas the old, bigger Pride events have huge costs.

The BBC has a hand-wringing article on the decline of Pride.

I have encountered a couple of small town Pride events in the last few years. They seemed to have been bolted on to existing summer events and added a faintly tacky and grubby element to what would otherwise have been quite pleasant summer flower shows and vintage car rallies, what with drag queens incongruently belting out disco hits very loudly in cobbled squares and an unnerving amount of fetish gear, badly dyed hair and walking sticks covered in tinsel carried by the young.

You keep saying it is Christian commuinity, yet less than 10% of the population bothered to attend the opening of the refurbished church.

The backlash Pride faces from inside and outside the LGBT community

Big companies used to go out of their way to support Pride. Now, there's a nervousness in the air, Darren Milby writes

I was interested in what Mumsnet would think of a small, rural, Christian community having an LGBT pride event so asked neutrally without saying too much of my own views.

This is a viewpoint held by gender criticals. Not the LGBT community.

What if someone is L, G, B or (/and) T, but also GC? Do you understand what all the letters mean, OP? They are inclusive! Not mutually exclusive! HTH.

ArabellaScott · 25/08/2026 11:08

Atoxicsewerofhate · 24/08/2026 17:51

That doesn't make sense though, there's no one held by the LGBT community, and plenty of people who could fall under any of those letters are in fact gender critical

Indeed. OP is trying hard to suggest that people who hold 'gender critical' views are anti LGBT, which is a bit of a daft thing to suggest.

Did you, I see.

I think you'll find 'nobody cares' is roughly the usual sentiment, OP.

So if a lesbian only wants to sleep with women she's not a member of the LGBTQ+ community but if a heterosexual man wants to put on a dress and claim he's a lesbian, he is a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Gotcha.

MyPeachBiscuit · 24/08/2026 14:13

I don't see a problem. I assume it's local people who are organising the parade and the demand is coming from the local community. Someone can be elderly and/or Christian and LGBTQ+ so these aren't mutually exclusive categories.

As a bi woman, I wish my small town had a Pride parade when I was growing up. There aren't gay bars in rural areas so there are limited opportunities to meet and socialise with other WLW.

Heggettypeg · 24/08/2026 14:13

Dooferer · 24/08/2026 07:14

I thought Pride was dying out? Homophobia is about as acceptable are racism and gay people have no desire to be associated with the AGP creeps that turn out to these events to be turned on with ‘validation’.

I have an impression from what's been happening locally to me that some smaller, more rural places have only discovered Pride in the last few years, and are starting to have events just as some of the big commercial city Prides are running into difficulties. I don't know what started this "second wave", but I've been aware of it since COVID.

BackToLurk · 24/08/2026 13:51

MintBird · 24/08/2026 13:10

LGBT are welcome, that's made clear. If you mean are homophobes and/or transphobes welcome to attend to cause trouble I would think and hope not.

Is that it? That's your 'gotcha' long game? Too transparent. 1 star, would not recommend.

BonfireLady · 24/08/2026 13:23

MintBird · 24/08/2026 13:10

If a lesbian group who wanted to promote support for same-sex attraction being accepted more widely without inappropriate behaviour from men (e.g. straight men who think it's ok to turn it into how sexy they find it when women kiss), would it be considered:

a) transphobic to include them? Because same-sex attraction means no members of the opposite sex, irrespective of any gender identity

or
b) homophobic to exclude them?

Because being same-sex attracted is a legitimate sexual orientation and to say otherwise is homophobic

It can't be both because telling lesbian women that they need to include biological males (who identify as women) in their definition of lesbianism is going to let in all the heterosexual (opposite-sex attracted), autogynophilic biological males who find it a turn on to think about women kissing. Sadly this seems to be a popular viewpoint amongst autogynophilic males, where women's submissiveness and societal position as sex objects is all part of the fetish.

Many lesbians and gays are lesbian and gay precisely because they want same sex relationships, which is the opposite of 'trans', so your statement is patently untrue.

Sure, but remember the LGBT community does not include or speak for all LGB people. It includes and speaks for only those LGB people who see themselves as members of an LGBT community.

You don't get to impose your ideas of identity onto other people.
