'Pregnant people'

I know there are more important battles, but this pisses me off and we've learned that gender-centric language is used as a wedge.

Only women get pregnant. Don't try to erase the relevance of female sex. This doesn't happen to men - all the info my friend with prostate cancer gets refers to men with prostate cancer, not 'people with prostate cancer'. There'd be outrage and a lot of hurt if someone tried to set up support for 'people with prostate cancer'.

This time it was the Food Standards Agency, issuing a reminder about the groups most at risk from salmonella poisoning.

I just wanted to let off steam.

So that I have a bit more excuse, let's have an utterly pointless voodoo poll to see how many enablers and TRAs are hanging around.

Credit where credit's due.

In its story on the salmonella risk the BBC News website is using "pregnant women" in its headline and its own text.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx2krdggx6xo

There is a quote from the FSA chief scientific adviser, Ian Young, where he says "..for those people in particular who are young, elderly, pregnant or vulnerable...", which is an obvious cop-out.

Plate with runny eggs

Under-fives and pregnant women told to avoid runny eggs when eating out over salmonella risk

Advice given to under fives, over 65s, pregnant women and others amid salmonella outbreak.

This is primarily to be inclusive to TIFs and non-binaries, not to TIMs.

No. If 'inclusivity' mattered there would be upteen ads for 'people with a prostate' to make sure that TIMs realised that despite how they identified, they could still get prostate cancer.

StickySundew · 21/08/2026 08:13

It seems worth a brief reminder that this thread was prompted by irritation at a press release from the Food Standards Agency, aimed at the general public, about the groups at higher risk from salmonella poisoning. Concision matters.

In a socio-political context it would be appropriate to refer to 'pregnant girls', if they were under the age of consent when they conceived. In healthcare messaging aimed at trans-identifying women it would be appropriate to use language that encourages them to take up screening invitations and seek care - and such messaging should be disseminated via sources trusted by TIFs, in the spaces they use.

The FSA's public health warning wasn't either of those.

I'm not going to go back and check,* but although the warning is performatively trans-inclusive at the expense of the overwhelming majority of pregnant women, I don't think it mentioned (presumably for brevity) that people with multiple or severe disabilities are often vulnerable too. That's probably the group where awareness of the vulnerability (amongst their carers) is highest, but it's a much larger group than pregnant TIFs. If this were truly about 'inclusion' the warning would have been comprehensive.

*I did. Here's the warning:
She advised: "Infants, young children, pregnant people and older adults should only eat runny or raw eggs if they have a British Lion mark or are produced under the Laid in Britain egg assurance scheme."

Gynae care especially. If you aren't sure you can trust someone who will examine you so intimately, then you will be put off from attending.

So near and yet....so, so far.

If a woman who wants a woman to examine her can't be sure she can trust the person is actually a woman, she will be put off.

You are sympathetic to the feelings of transmen, fair enough, but you stubbornly refuse to acknowledge how women without a trans identity feel.

Transwomen are men. Even the doctor ones.

Bit out of left field, but today I saw an instagram post of a TIM who had had lots of 'work' done to become a woman (!) and took a DNA test and was distraught to see he still came up XY. No shit sherlock? Unbelievable.

I’ve just looked this up. It is unbelievable!! One comment said “You can’t trans your DNA.”

This is appalling! I read that he is now practicing in Australia.

Yes - and no doubt continuing to ignore or completely disregard the wishes, feelings or discomfort of Australian women.

These are not the people who are unwelcome in health services - women are. Health services are falling over themselves to accommodate men.

BeanQuisine · 20/08/2026 16:31

If a "non-binary genderfluid" person ascends to the throne, I assume it will be Their Majesty, The Quing.

Imagine the upper crust after-dinner toasts.

"Ladies and gentlemen - The Quing!"

Assembled officers and gentlefolk, rising: "The Quing!"

The difficulty of course is that not every woman is aware of her rights (it's known as something different in NHS Scotland btw), which is why you have people like Dr Upton who have freely admitted that they will continue to treat a woman even if she requests a female Dr. This means that women who may want to see a male Dr may be left feeling that she is not able to request one when she knows she's being treated by a male but he claims he's a woman. Absolutely chilling.

Anyone can request a change of doctor or chaperone. It's in the Patients Charter.

I know this because I'm a survivor of childhood physical abuse who's had kids, so have often been examined by cis men.

I would personally prefer a trans woman to examine me over a cis guy, but as always would request someone else be present if one wasn't offered. I don't want any physical exam done without a witness.

Oh and using slurs to describe minorities isn't argument.

So you don't disagree that it is perfectly acceptable for traumatised women to request a change of doctor on the grounds that she does not wish to be examined by a male, however he presents? And you therefore, by extension, agree that sex is real and single sex care is essential for many women? Thank you.

Also, I did not use a slur for any minority. As someone who ticks several minority boxes myself, I would never do that.

I am sorry about your history - I am also an abuse survivor so I do empathise and understand how upsetting things like medical appointments can be. I hope you are doing okay 💐

Fair point. The feelings and behaviour of trans-identified men are another whole minefield.

I’m aware and of course it’s all infuriating bollocks.

but as I said, it’s mildly less infuriating to me if it’s not TIM feelings that are being soothed, which some posters were implying.

They are already included by virtue of being women - adult female humans. Sex cannot be changed. The inner feelings of individuals matter to them, of course, but they are no reason to change or erase the words which belong to and describe the female sex.

Trans people exist, albeit in very small numbers. They need healthcare.

You can get as an angry as you want, deny what you want. Fair enough, your life. Doesn't alter that they will keep being born, getting jobs, and dropping sprogs.

People who belong to minorities deserve a health service which welcomes them. We fought for that.

This is just not an answer to the question. Nobody is saying trans people don't exist or deserve healthcare. Women deserve good maternity services and healthcare generally no matter how they feel about their sex or how they choose to perform whatever they perceive as 'gender'. But 'woman' is the right term for a human gestating a baby.

Sorry if this has already been said. This is primarily to be inclusive to TIFs and non-binaries, not to TIMs.

I know the principle is the same but I find it mildly less enraging to think of it that way.

My children were taught as far back as primary school that your intent and your impact can be wildly different things.

In an attempt to include the tiny minority of women who have a problem being referred to as such thus using "pregnant people" the word woman is wiped from the discussion about pregnancy and childbirth. You cannot have a useful discussion about abortion rights unless you define the people whom it affects - women. The Dobbs decision will have no impact whatsoever on my son's health - nor his decision on where to live. It may well have an impact on my daughters' health and pretending otherwise is just a lie - a lie that excludes women from the very thing that only affects them.

To say nothing of wiping the word "women" from the most dangerous yet incredible thing that we and only we can do with our bodies. every human who ever stood on this earth came from the body of a woman.

“We are all born of woman, and we carry the pulse of the first mother in our blood.”

TransParentlyAnnoyed · 20/08/2026 11:51

I'm gonna explain this in really simple terms.

Trans men use male pronouns and very often pass as cis men. They don't think of themselves as cis guys - they are trans guys.

All their friends, decent family members and colleagues refer to them by their name and pronouns. Some won't even know they are trans.

They are happy in who they are and live perfectly normal, very full lives. Sometimes, they decide to have children.

And the NHS is fine with that. The biggest concern for HCPs is that trans guys trust them enough to access care, especially when they're pregnant. So they use inclusive language on healthcare messaging.

That's it. That's the whole thing.

Your inability to understand that most folk don't have an issue with trans people, and just want them to be okay, is your problem.

Thank you. I will also explain in very simple terms.

These women who call themselves trans "men" do so because they have projected their personal issues with "women" onto words that to everyone else simply mean sex.

When people like yourself demand this sexist language is treated as an actual truth, it hurts everyone, just as acconodating racist or ablist language hurts everyone.

That you deny this doesn't matter. It is still true. The moment you give headspace to the idea that a female person can be anything other than a woman or girl, you add a non-physical quality into being a "woman" or "girl" that reduces our possibilities from the full diversity of the female half of the soecies into whatever sexist ideas trans "men" and "women" believe should limit us.

And it is not decent to impose this sexism onto the general population. Not. At. All.

Doesn't alter that they will keep being born

I’m not too sure about that 🤔. With more and more children likely to be infertile through damage caused by certain so-called ‘life saving’ drugs and the semen producing people dying out through the use of X-sex hormones and surgery, where will these babies come from?

This is such a good point about children becoming infertile.
“semen producing people “ 🤣

Would a pregnant 15-year-old agree with you? There are plenty of very young mothers, unfortunately.

True, Sadly sexual maturity and the ability to become pregnant happens before full physical, psychological and emotional maturity. The fact remains that only females of the human species can become pregnant, which is the point I was making and how they identify is irrelevant.

6ate9 · 20/08/2026 12:40

Grammarnut · 20/08/2026 12:32

I agree. Transwoman ought to mean a woman who is 'trans' i.e. thinks she is a man. I suspect that this confusion has led many people to say that 'of course transwomen should be in women's lavatories, prisons etc' because the respondent thinks it is women being talked about. I also suspect that the (very little) publicity that has revealed that 'transwomen' are actually men has gone a long way towards the withdrawal of support for them being in actual women's spaces.

I’ve slipped up before. I really have to think about it.

Trans women (or is it transwomen?) = Men
Trans-identified male (or is it man?) = Man

Agree also - and then when it becomes even clearer that the overwhelming majority of men who call themselves TW do absolutely nothing in terms of surgery or taking hormones, but simply demand everyone calls them Helen and give them access to whatever space their manly feelz demand, then the support drops away even further. The blinkers are off now - and continue to come off.

BridgetYourFortyDaysAreUp · 18/08/2026 20:28

@dinodart you're absolutely right, words are powerful, they have meaning, and no one should have the right to appropriate words simply because they WANT them. Toddlers want whatever they want, and want it now, but we teach them that this is not how society, and adults, operate. You don't always get what you want.

In the human species, only the female sex can become pregnant. The words in English for the pregnant female sex are "woman " and, occasionally, "girl" NOT "person" or "people." This dilution and misappropriation of the English language has to stop.

It's coming from pure misogyny. If anyone was trying to erase "man" or "men" from the English language, you can bet that they would be

a. laughed at
b. ignored
c. pilloried on social media
or simply

d. non-existent, because it would never happen.

Perhaps read this quickly, if you care to, because yes, the most innocuous of statements seem to disappear rapidly in August.

Replacing 'woman' with people is also a linguistic sleight of hand that makes language less universal and less understandable. Words refer to real objects (or ideas, I know) and directing them at an object to which they don't point is damaging linguistically as well as to women in particular in this case.
Transwomen are men. All pregnant 'people' are women - with no exception.
When I say baked beans I don't mean egg and chips.
