... without telling me you don't know what a cult is.

I grew up in a cult-ish church. It had some very unpleasant aspects to it indeed. The very concept of the GC movement as a cult utterly baffles me, and irritates me quite a bit, I must admit.

Where is our Leader? Some say JKR is that, even though she obviously didn't create the movement, since she joined it after it already existed. Okay, but then where is the cult of personality? Where is the hanging onto her every word? Where is the compulsory study of her life? Where is the regular and compulsory show of support of her as our leader?

What are the specific beliefs that random people outside the movement don't believe? "Men can't become women and vice versa" is not such a belief, since loads of people who would never call themselves GC also believe it. So what are our specific beliefs?

What is the rite of entry into the movement? How does one know that they themselves or someone else is a member of the movement?

Where are the big gatherings where the leaders speak The Word? Where are the regular gatherings where the members reinforce each other's beliefs?

What are the demands made of the members? Where are the compulsory meetings? Where are the financial requirements? Where are the specific behaviours we have to adhere to?

Where are the punishments for leaving the group? How do you even know you've left at all? And where are the stories of abuse and control told by the former members?

I could go on forever.

Accusing GC people of belonging to a cult is just as ridiculous and offensive as claiming, for example, that there's a trans genocide going on. It's deliberately appropriating the real suffering of other people to make a completely false and unsupportable point because there's no actual valid point to make. It's utterly reprehensible and shameful.

Lol so knowing that biological sex exists and not wanting kids sterilised and mutilated is now being an abuser.

I'd say the people who DO want kids sterilised and mutilated is the abuser but hey ho.

My experience is that some trans people and allies display cult-like behaviour, and some (like Seethlaw) are prepared to countenance changing their views. One of the characteristics of cults is the requirement to adhere to a very rigid set of dogmas, and to question these is to find oneself an outcast. A particular rigid dogma that I have personally fallen foul of is the absolute requirement for "good" people to use "preferred pronouns". Before I had even thought through my understanding of sex and gender, I struggled with calling my son "Rose" (not his actual choice of name) and referring to him as "she", "herself" etc. For this terrible behaviour (I should have bowed to the dogma that preferred pronouns are compulsory, and any use of traditional sex-based pronouns or deadnaming requires apology) I have been cut off. Even a family member who does use preferred pronouns has been cut off, apparently partly for not condemning me enough.

["Deadnaming" is an interesting choice of gender identity jargon, by the way, as to me it implies death of the old self and rebirth as the new trans self, with parallels to religious conversion but a much stronger rejection of the old self than I have come across in Christian circles, because the name change seems to be required. Maybe the name changes for monks and nuns are comparable, but I haven't come across nuns or monks kicking up a fuss about the use of their old names; similarly with change of surname on marriage.]

Now my son appears to be resisting this cutting off, and is keeping open a tenuous line of communication, so he seems not to be a fully paid up member of what I do see as at least having some of the typical characteristics of a cult.

Two of my children have cut me off for my views on the grounds that I am unable to believe that gender identity is real. Apparently criticizing the ongoing suggestion that Ellen Paige is an icon of being authentic to herself was the last straw.

I guess if you have young lesbian friends who have been medicated and mastectomised, it’s a lot more comfortable to believe that their body has been harmonized with its “true inner self” and to want to protect them from the awful mother who believes they’ve been lied to and medically harmed and will eventually have to deal with the horror that brings.

Not that I would have ever said that to any of their friends, nor would I have used correct sex pronouns in their hearing, but terfs are all evil, so cutting me off was the only reasonable option, I guess.

Before they swallowed this ideology, we had a healthy and loving relationship, as far as I know. Certainly they chose to spend time with me and we had some very harmonious times. It’s desperately sad and I live in fear that something bad will happen to one or other of us and the rest will have to live with the pain forever.

Nah, it's a comparison.

The reason being GC is compared to a cult is that it's taken over lives. There is study (of each other's ridiculous origin myths for trans people), a significant loss of friends who don't share your beliefs, ignoring of the very significant character flaws in leading figures, and - most of all - loss of outside interests.

The attempts to forcibly detrans trans people via denial of care, and to place them in grave danger of violence by relentlessly vilifying them, are the reasons for the phrase trans genocide.

Minorities get to describe their persecution and those who persecute them, as they see fit.

Look at this forum. Someone is currently proposing boycotting a company because they are considerate towards trans/nb people's needs.

That's it. Not because the company's harming women (take a look at the very decent provisions for female workers). Just because they don't hate trans people and recognise they may have extra needs.

That is cultish behaviour.

It's also the behaviour of people who want trans people not to exist anymore. Though quite what you'd do with your life if they didn't - what would you do with all that extra time?

Perhaps comparison to QAnon would be more appropriate. Reading the Queer Milk panic reminded me of Pizzagate, and of studying The Crucible.

I'm sorry you have experienced a cultish church, that's awful. But don't you recognise some of the hallmarks?

The keeping people in a state of terror and paranoia as means of control?

The othering of anyone who speaks against the group's beliefs?

The repetition?

The removal of friends who might extract you?

The single subject of study?

The consultation of sacred texts?

The exhortation to pay into crowdfunders and buy merch to keep cult leaders going?

The way some people appear to have got very rich by telling their followers to give them money?

It's exactly the same mechanism as something very familiar to me: domestic abuse.

I'm an abuse survivor who's helped others leave their abusers. I know what I'm talking about. I usuall.do it by comparing leaving DV to leaving a cult.

I know this forum gives me PTSD flashbacks, and why: it's packed with people who are so angry at their targets, they'll attack anything they do.

You know how you try to placate an abuser? They don't like the way you dress. Or talk. Or have friends. So you try to change. But eventually, they are so desperate to get to the high of telling you you're evil that they punch you for opening a door too loudly. Putting a plate down at the wrong angle. Even, appearing in a room.

That's where a lot of posters are at on this forum now. Definitely not all, but a hardcore of abusive people who have radicalised themselves and now hunger for news of What The Trans Have Done Now.

They're being treated decently by a nut company! One's appeared on TV! One fell in love with a cis guy on I Kissed A Boy! There's a Pride Progress flag in Morrisons! Someone famous has says they love their nb child! Feeding time!! Come and hurt them!

Every abuser hates their target, and feels utterly justified in 'punishing' them. They demand conformity and say they've been really tolerant up til now but their target's gone too far. The hate gives them validation and peace.

Seriously, what would you do with those extra hours?

Or is the pull of hate too addictive? Because look what they made you do.

Look what they made you do.

FlatCatYellowMat · 14/08/2026 13:52

As a general rule, if one side's idea of a protest is to wear an expensive dress and a mask and tip bottles of their own urine over themselves, and the other's side is to tie ribbons on various bits of street furniture, then I think 9/10 people wouldn't struggle to figure out who the worrying ones are.

Pingponghavoc · 14/08/2026 13:51

Its difficult.

I find it hard to imagine a 12 year old be sexually motivated.

But that 12 year old grows up and suddenly his sexuality is priority. Even a man in his 20s might not initially be sexually motivated, it more often than not becomes such. He may never physically attack a women or girl, but he can become a sex pest by redefining what it is to be a lesbian, not giving women space.

RapidOnsetGenderCritic · 14/08/2026 13:45

To put a slightly counter-argument, I personally do sometimes have a problem with people implying that all trans indentifying men have the same motivation. However, I come across this far more often on TwiX than FWR. I think it's quite possible that men claiming to be women sometimes or even usually have a sexual motive – men's sexuality can be a very powerful motive or urge.

But I also see men/boys who appear to be the equivalent of women/girls with discomfort about their bodies or expected societal roles. They are generally on the autistic spectrum, misfits at school, and struggling to negotiate healthy relationships. Men are also vulnerable to types of social contagion; once we have found a tribe to belong to, we can be just as prone to behave in the way our tribe expects. And this is one reason why I have concerns about the Queer Theory underpinnings of trans thinking. If in our circles boundaries are seen as bad because they are restrictive, what could be better than to cross boundaries and be free? But boundaries are there for a purpose, and we should be cautious about abandoning them in my opinion. That is not to say the boundaries cannot be questioned, but they seem to be seen as invitations to transgress.

There can never be enough transgressions for many queer theory activists. You can’t ever satisfy the insatiable.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/08/2026 13:49

I agree with you, but to make the point about why all men should stay out I think it’s necessary to highlight the very male, creepy behaviour of some.

I think there is also a tactic where some people who believe that they are moderate in their views mislabel those who don’t believe that female people should be harmed or left unprotected as ‘extreme’ and then start using flawed ‘both sides’ arguments.

The ‘both sides’ arguments are flawed for numerous reasons. Partly because an approach that those who use the ‘both sides’ argument still provably harms female people (with evidence available). Partly because there is no assymetry between the points of view with one being evidenced with biology being immutable and the other being based on a subjective belief that is not founded in material reality.

Partly also because the violence and intimidation that is threatened or is perpetrated isn’t in anyway comparable between the two sides when you consider the evidence. Nor is the demand for control of people’s language, and the ability to punish people for not acting as if a subjective belief is material reality when it is not.

Well said. There's no "both sides" when one group is simply quietly asserting what science says, and the other group is aggressively defending a metaphysical belief.

There's just one side: the side attacking reason and science - and that's not us.

Just as an interesting aside, do we collectively feel that TRAs are a "cult", or have "cultlike" behavioural models?

Genuine question.

I doubt "we" have a collective feel about this. Some of us will think TRAs have some cult-like traits, while some others will shrug and think it's not that bad.

I personally feel that there are some strong cult-like traits in the TRA movement, but they also miss some essential aspects of a cult, starting with defined leaders as previous posters have mentioned.

My guess is most people calling the GC Cult a cult are referring to 'cultish' or 'cultlike' thinking and behaviour which, to be fair, is pretty spot on.

But what cultish or cultlike thinking and behaviour?? That's the whole point of my post: what is that behaviour we're supposedly exhibiting? How does it manifest itself?

Fair question, and one I don't personally have the answer to (perhaps we can get some of the people who are referring to this as a cult into this thread to comment; so long as MNHQ don't ban all their posts and accounts, which seems to have happened in other threads).

My own view is that there is a pervading attitude among many, not all, of the more - shall we say, refreshingly vocal? - regulars here that GC ideology is the one, true God belief and that anything which opposes it must be - must be - attacked and torn down.

We see this when a few - very brave in my view, given where they are - people dare to suggest that perhaps trans-women and those that support them aren't quite the behorned devils some people here take them to be.
Such posts are routinely followed by a very few well-thought out responses, then a wave of replies that range from rigid, immutable thinking all the way to outright attacks and whataboutisms (often descending into comparisons with Reddit that some people here have a weird obsession with).
Honestly, it's little wonder people are slow and cautious to post anything that might be seen as dissenting against the cult/tribe/group <delete as appropriate>.

Whether people are correct to view the group who call themselves GC sex-realists as a cult is, honestly, a question we need to put to those people who use the "cult" label. But, again, I strongly suspect that MNHQ are so quick with the ban-hammer that such accounts don't last long. A little like Reddit, in a way...

Do you have an example of such a post? Because honestly, I can't remember any such post, at least recently.

Also: nobody thinks that transwomen as a group are behorned devils. Some of them are (some of them are condemned rapists, for starters), but most of them are not.

Such posts are routinely followed by a very few well-thought out responses, then a wave of replies that range from rigid, immutable thinking all the way to outright attacks and whataboutisms

So... Different reactions? So not a homogenous, tribe-like answer at all?

Weird. I was rather under the impression that TRAs have no problem posting outright inflammatory material...

But, again, I strongly suspect that MNHQ are so quick with the ban-hammer that such accounts don't last long.

The only accounts I've seen disappearing were openly and viciously attacking other people on the forum. Or were new accounts of already banned people who had previously engaged in such behaviour..

"What is the opposing belief? That humans can change sex? "

I see that you are getting confused. Obviously, human can't change sex and - at least, I assume to be the case - TRAs don't believe that either.

Compounding your confusion, you seem to have equated me with a TRA. I support none of you, of either tribe, but my understanding is that the TRA approach is rather more focused on the socio-philosophical question of what is a woman, rather than on the clear, irrefutable biology of it*

*very obviously - or perhaps, given your response, not so obviously? - we're not discussing the higher degrees of biological study and genetics here.

"I see that you are getting confused. Obviously, human can't change sex and - at least, I assume to be the case - TRAs don't believe that either"

All part of the wild ride on the trans train that started years ago when men schooled the that population TW are Women. It was even projected onto the MoJ building by one of the trans extremist groups. Women have watched as the sex change brigade have gaslit and groomed children for years - hence the volume of mentally vulnerable children / young people believing they've been born in the wrong body and seeking to block their natural puberty and seek drugs and surgery to effectively change their sex!
(I know this is basic information but your posts suggest you're unfamiliar with the issues that you're seeking to lecture about).

New posters to this board (welcome btw) can't expect a free pass to try to rewrite history and not be challenged by others

Your complaints about new posters being banned is interesting. Generally these posters display extreme levels of emotional incontinence - endless posts drowning a thread, little sneers buried in word salad posts and eventually escalating into abuse as none of their posts persuades women that we should stop safeguarding children, hand over women's sport to men or accept the premise that women must undress in front of random men as they're really women.

It's tedious but quite funny to watch.

Sometimes is difficult to the ball not the man. And i know i can come across as mean, hardlined and uncaring. Probably signs to others of a cult.

I have so much sympathy for children and vulnerable people caught up in this. And I wouldnt want to hurt them more than they already are. I suspect, other than the adult AGP, most are trying to solve other problems.

But how is it possible to get rid of this and not talk about individuals?

For example. I can see Ellen Page is in a lot of pain, but shes also a poster girl for transitioning. How many girls see her and think that transitioning is the answer? How many girls has Ellen Page introduced to transitioning?

Vulnerable people can be abusive too. Or be so self centred they dont think or care about anyone else.

My focus is on safeguarding and that means nobody conceal their sex and no-one breaks the rules.

TRA does the opposite. Its always has reasons why a person can conceal their sex or break the rules.

Well no, not really. No sex realist is going to adopt any TRA arguments because none of them make any sense. And we’re not going to adopt any of their insults or tactics because… well we’re not violent.

There are some cult-like aspects to transactivism, for example the ever-changing language that marks you as being a member. For example the invented offence of adding a gap into the word “transwoman” which had to be changed (and the change cultishly followed) because that allowed men to pretend trans is an adjective. Also adherence to obviously false mantras, such as TWAW and so on. Even the celebrities who’ve bought in know to chant that one, every single time the topic comes up.

There is no obvious leader however, so that aspect is out, but there is a concerted effort to vilify parents who might interfere with the group think. That is a very destructive part of the ideology.

And of course, the obvious fact of people being brought to believe something that is so obviously untrue. In reality, everyone knows men are not women. Those who say otherwise are lying.

Remember when they collectively threw a fit about their silly term “womxn” and pretended the “terfs” invented it, causing several virtue signalling companies who had used it to issue grovelling apologies and promises to do better?

Hmmm... whilst it is interesting and horrifying in equal measure to see signs like that, I do think we need to be careful not to fall into the trap of judging an entire group by the actions of a few.

And for the TRAs present - if there are any - that absolutely goes both ways. The extreme views of some GC people do not equate to the views of all GC people as a collective.

The extreme views of some GC people

What extreme views of which 'GC' people?

I don't call myself GC so I'm interested in who you are talking about here.

Really? Because again, in my mind, some of the rabble were there 20 minutes early (50% are miffed about how late the others are, 50% just came straight from school drop-off, so they're having a cup of tea and a chat and enjoying the break before the official activities start). Some will stroll in on time, others come in with a flurry just as we kick off, apologising and being assured we've not even started, it's all good. A few more say they have to drop in on their mum, but they'll catch up part way along, and others have the kids in tow because childcare fell through.

None of us have pitch forks - because what we're asking is to be left alone with the rights we fought so long to get, we're not hunting anyone - the most we're doing is asking to be allowed to shoe blokes out of women's spaces with a broom.

Excellent, chapeau!

"However, I fail to see a central personality in the TRA movement."

As I've alluded to before, my suspicion with such movements is that the ideology is central, not any one individual.

Although you could make a reasonable argument that some GC people see JKR as the personification of their ideology, but who would you even pick for TRAs?

I see JKR as a gender realist, straight talking, feminist, who is passionate in her genuine desire to empower women. I see her in much the same way as the wonderful, intelligent women here on this board. She's not our ideological leader at all but more simply one of us. What stands her out is her ability to reach millions of people at the stroke of her keyboard. She has nothing to prove or require from anybody. TRAs imagine we folloe her as some sort of hypnotic cult leader bit that could not be further than the truth.

BackToLurk · 14/08/2026 11:46

I, as most of us can, can only speak from my own experience. I am 'broadly GC' whatever that means (thanks Lady Di). I have points of agreement and points of disagreement with others on this board, around key ideas and high profile people. I've never felt unable to articulate these disagreements. Sure, sometimes the responses are 'robust', but I don't see that kind of challenge and pushback as a negative. I'm sure others do, but to me at least, that's a 'them problem'.

NotBadConsidering · 14/08/2026 11:43

Oh dear 🤣 fancy having no idea what nonsense TRAs spout. They absolutely DO believe humans can change sex. In fact, I was reading a Reddit thread the other day that was full of trans people saying sex is fluid and gender is immutable.
