Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Are we a cult?

I keep reading that sex realists, of which I am one, are a cult. Perhaps a genderist could be so kind as to explain what a cult is, and why we qualify. Sometimes one of us calls them a cult too. Who has a better case, hmmm?

I think @Stonehenger should get FWRs derailer of the month award.
I'm currently up to 8 pages on whether "get your knickers in a twist" is a misogynistic phrase or not (and I'm still several pages behind the thread.
Bravo! That's some impressive derailing there.

Very not-shocked to learn that talking about misogyny is considered derailing by gender critical ‘feminists’

Have you missed all the posts on this thread about the concept of trans misogyny? It describes how misogyny and transphobia intersect in the treatment of trans women specifically.

I was busy catching up with the nonsense being posted by those willing to put a subset of men into the female sex class. I got to the tranmisogyny rubbish later.

Its not so long ago that TiM was banned on here.

Yes I got detention for using it. It depended on someone reporting you though. There was a prolific snitch reporter on here at the time.

Well I’d also distinguish between cis men and trans men! You don’t have to use the terminology; I’m just saying it does exist, and it solves the problem someone raised.

What's wrong with saying "masculine woman" or "feminine man"? That's biologically accurate and also gives you an idea of their gender identity without assuming that anybody actually is a subset of the sex they identify with.

OMG. 'Twas I who asked, long, long ago (yesterday) what terrible things JKR was thought to have done. I didn't expect it to spark a million page discussion about upskirting and knickers being got in a twist.

Sorry 😬

You shall go to bed without supper tonight.

I use trans-identifying man, but my preferred option: actual woman and pretend woman, or even better: woman and man

You could use cis woman in the cases where it’s important to distinguish between a cis woman and a trans woman (eg medical settings). The rest of the time, I think woman is fine for us all. You are welcome to disagree, but there IS a usable option.

Why? this would mean misgendering somebody which we all know is leteral violence.

And also you run the risk of "outing" someone. which has been bad since the 80s and much frowned upon by th etrans community.

I'm reminded of a student political activist who got to speak to a parliamentary committee about how trans he was. He described himself as a 'queer trans disabled lesbian woman'.

Im not sure if its clear what any of the words mean in that description.

That's almost the point isn't it?

To distract you from what you see with your eyes - 'middle class white male'

(I know he's white because he doesn't add this to his identity politics. I know he's probably middle class as he's university educated).

Transwoman or trans identifying man.

Trans woman implies they are a subset of women. They are not.

There was a discussion upthread where someone described themselves as a trans pragmatist and I find that a great descriptor for my views. It’s finding what society can settle on to get some form of consensus going forwards and putting a space isn’t currently a problem from my perspective ( nor is using someone’s pronouns as long as that’s my choice and it is understood that doesn’t open access to women’s rights) although I appreciate that will not be the same for everyone ( #notacult ) Personally I want to de-stigmatise the term trans so that people don’t feel they have to cling so hard to the concept of themselves as a woman or man and can simply describe themselves as a TW/TM

If the word 'woman' becomes unstable, so do the adjectives.

What is a tall woman or a short man if anyone can be a woman or a man?

A while back I wrote a very considered and nuanced post about how misogyny can manifest itself in discrimination and abuse of men as well, not because these men are in any way women but because the patriarchal devaluing of/disgust towards the female creates a cultural devaluing of/disgust towards men exhibiting socially female-coded aspects.

The illustration I used was the abuse white musicians and white people in mixed race couples got from racists in the 1960s in the US. They were not themselves Black but the racist devaluing of anything Black was why they were abused.

Others disagreed.

This is the type of nuanced, difficult and insightful analysis around the concept of male bodies and feminine behavous within patriarchy that we could be discussing/having a good productive feminist argument about.

But we can't do that while these neo-sexist Genderists are insisting the fundamental insight, the patriarchal rejection of the female body, isn't a thing we can recognise because if TW actually are women as well, anything to do with sex can't be significant to womanhood or misogyny.

I understand that that could be a manifestation of misogyny, but would you label it differently? Femmephobia, maybe? (Sorry, feminist theory is not my area of expertise at all.)

I just keep getting this in my head whenever I come back to this thread.

God, I really miss New Romantic, Goth, and Grunge looks for men. Glam Rock not so much but it worked for some of them.

Youth culture has become so conformist it's no bloody wonder so many young people (men in particular) feel their self-expression is straightjacketed these days.

MrPrettyDamnCosmic · 13/08/2026 11:48

The examples given are mostly men using the phrase "Don't get your knickers in a twist" to other men. The first use is in a 1971 Andy Capp cartoon with Andy telling the male rent collector not to get his knickers in a twist. This is certainly my experience of the phrase that it's neither gendered nor misogynistic.

American version
"Don't get your panties in a bunch (wad)"
Also said to both men and women

Pedantry won't save you from the fact that prefixes like 'trans' 'cis' 'black' 'white' exist when there is a need to differentiate between types of women . Given trans women are rarely a part of most peoples lives (except for those who incessantly obsess about them) its not exactly coming up in conversation.

Black and white aren't prefixes

I assume someone has already pointed this out to you (I haven't caught up with the thread yet) but in case they couldn't be arsed haven't, I now have

But “ black “ and “ white” aren’t “types “ of woman? And if we are thinking in terms of types, wouldn’t a trans woman be a type of man anyway?

Oh, I can just imagine the news headlines "Adult human female assaulted/raped/murdered". Really trips off the tongue doesn't it?

"Violence against adult human females and child human females"

You wonder who this obfuscation serves.

(Reader, she did not wonder)

Woman are not now, have never been and never will be a sub-class of our own sex class. By definition "trans" women are male, otherwise what have they transitioned from? They are a sub-class of the male sex class, not the female.
