Great article - capture of the left, trans rights versus women's rights.

The left is supposed to begin with material reality. Bodies. Labour. Class. Wages. Violence. The analysis of women’s oppression that produced the Equality Act, that built the refuges, that fought for the single-sex provisions now being contested, was a materialist analysis. Women are oppressed because they are female. Not because of how they feel about being female. Because of reproduction, sexual vulnerability, male violence, unpaid domestic care, wage inequality and systematic exclusion from public life. The material conditions of being a woman in this world are not a cultural mood. They are a structural fact.

Liberalism, in its contemporary iteration, has made a different set of commitments. It has committed to the proposition that identity is self-determined, that the sincere assertion of an identity creates an obligation on others to affirm it, and that any structure which resists this obligation is oppressive by definition. That is not materialism. It is idealism. It mistakes the declaration for the thing declared. It confuses the map for the territory, the word for the body the word describes.

There is nothing inherently left-wing in that position. It is, in fact, a philosophy that systematically privileges the subjective over the material, the assertion over the evidence, and the feelings of one group over the physical safety of another. On those terms, it is not the left that has adopted a new progressive position. It is the left that has been captured by liberalism and dressed the result in the language of solidarity.

Bailey’s method is to consistently misrepresent what others think, use loads of word salad and to make sure to use sex and gender to mean whatever he wants in a given context, sometimes interchangeably. He avoids accurate language or clarity because it is the only way to cover up the magical
thinking at the heart of his beliefs.

I have no idea what he really believes, or what he purports to believe.

But he did just try to present the knowledge that sex doesn’t determine gender as some sort of “gotcha”. God knows why he thinks this is a clever point I don’t know. Seems obvious to me.

What he didn’t clarify is that we are talking about single sex provisions, so gender is not relevant. Toilets, changing rooms, women’s refuges are not single gender provisions, so that is where he likes to muddy the waters.

He is not worth wasting time on.

Got it! He's Judith Butler!

FlirtsWithRhinos · 13/08/2026 12:00

He thinks he's right so whatever he feels like saying in the moment must be a good argument.

I mean, to be fair by his own beliefs he is. He thinks being a man or a woman is based on believing your own preferences and activities align to what you personally believe the averagely observable preferences and activities of a particular sex is.

He believes in general these will be fairly consistent because there are observable behavioural commonalities, but the ultimate arbitration is personal not social so he can sidestep the trap of defining man- and woman- hood by stereotypes.

Honestly, taken in isolation it's not unreasonable. I actually see a lot of value in recognising these types of identities.

Where it falls down is not the concepts but how he believes they can function in society as it is today

(1) the jump to undefining sex and replacing it socially and legally with these personal identities. Sex and the consequences of sex do not go away sinply because one has decided to use the names "boy" and "man", "girl" and "woman" to mean something else, we just lose the language, visibility and tools we need to deal with them. And this affects women in particular since the "default" human in our society is male and without clear sexed language amd concepts we lose any way to explain or describe how we are not served by that model.

(2) his ignorance of the degree to which the social context forms our sense of identity, likes and dislikes, hopes and ambitions in the first place. He (claims to) believe that recognising the social influences on identity is "infantilising" women and so non-femimist. This of course inevitably leads him to have to conclude that women just innately enjoy and seek out sexualisation, sexual display abd "dressing to attract", whereas those of us who actually are women understand to be a very conflicted experience drive as much by our practical need to function within society's sexism as by any innate drive. Here he is terribly, heartbreakingly and above all dangerously naive.

I’ve been trying to work out if Baileys posts are so confusing and impossible to read because they’re poorly written word salad or because they’re AI assisted and the prompts are as woolly and intangible as gender ideology is?

It's because it's deliberately disingenuous. Pigeon chess. Bit sad for anyone to spend so much of their time doing really. Best to ignore, I feel, though it's a shame to have to keep scrolling past pages of the wholly irrelevant distraction crap on threads like this. It's illustrative of tactics more than anything, but largely a complete waste of everyone's time. As intended, I'm sure.

Has very little to do with the article the thread is about, after all.

ElenOfTheWays · 13/08/2026 04:17

I'm not accusing you of anything.
Just making an observation.

Oh yeah its just soooo 'coincidental' for GC's to 'observe' every little thing related to sexually perverse behaviour. There's this thing called a Freudian slip.

Like I said, you ought to get that looked at.

Lol, I wish were true! But its simply a play on my name & favourite night clubbing drink from the eighties.

Nice to see GC's maintaining form with their sexual deviance obsession tho! You really ought to get that looked at.

Every accusation is a confession!

He's correct actually. The mansplaining and often creepy vibes of his posts not to mention the username chosen lead me to believe he's male.

And if you look at various posts on this thread discussing this poster, I'm clearly not the only one.

Is the 'creepy poster' in the room with you right now? 👀

Baileyonice · 13/08/2026 02:03

ElenOfTheWays · 12/08/2026 14:19

All I am going to say to this is that your username, being the nom de plume of a porn actor featured in gay teen torture porn, would be an extraordinary choice for a woman.

Does anyone else read many of these replies in the voice and general mannerisms of Axel from The Middle?

Anyway. No 'feminist journey' leads to allowing males access to women's spaces and resources. That's where the 'feminist journey' has comes to an abrupt halt and in the blink of an eye you've become a male rights activist.

Absofuckinglutely

OldCrone · 12/08/2026 09:15

At this point I admit I haven't got a clue what Bailey is trying to say.

He started off with saying that women had ladybrains and men had macho male brains, therefore anyone with a ladybrain is a woman.

Then he switched this round to say that male and female brains are identical.

He has refused throughout to answer whether he believes there is a difference between male and female bodies.

I have no idea what he really thinks.

Indeed. And if there’s no difference between male and female bodies, or brains, why do men feel the need to identify as women? How can they know what they are identifying as? Make it make sense.

Chickadeeinme · 12/08/2026 05:38

I think you’re reading a personal description that isn’t there. Her statement was in response to your assertion about a feminist journey. She pointed out that men can’t have one based on lived experience as a woman because they aren’t women.

He's correct actually. The mansplaining and often creepy vibes of his posts not to mention the username chosen lead me to believe he's male.

ElenOfTheWays · 12/08/2026 14:19

Baileyonice · 12/08/2026 01:43

Um, I never said they did.

That you need to categorise me as male because I don't agree with you might be comforting but its ultimately not helpful to the alleged cause of 'women's rights' to ignore woman's voices.

All I am going to say to this is that your username, being the nom de plume of a porn actor featured in gay teen torture porn, would be an extraordinary choice for a woman.

SabrinaThwaite · 12/08/2026 11:43

Um, TRA's don't believe sex determines gender so you will have try some other cockamamie excuse as cover for your ignorance.

Yeah, we know that - that’s the issue at hand, claiming to be a woman when you’re of the male sex and appropriating things intended only for people of the female sex.

Would be very grateful if anyone could attempt a give a good faith explanation of the argument that Bailey is trying to make.

I'm baffled.

No, it's not. There's no mention of "capacity" in that comment of yours you quote, only of interchangeability, a point I already responded to. Please do keep up.

Why would apes be mentioned if it wasn't? See where this is going?

The only ones who seem to need to stick their noses into other people's genitals to determine their sex is you, the TRAs. The rest of us do just fine with the immense amount of other clues. I don't have to mention my genitals for people to correctly sex me.

Um, TRA's don't believe sex determines gender so you will have try some other cockamamie excuse as cover for your ignorance.

Sex determines your sex though.

It's the supercilious sneering whilst spouting absolute guff that characterises Bailey's posts. The positions generally critical feminists hold bear no resemblance to the poorly formed nonsense Bailey needs to assign to us in order to tilt at the windmills in their own head.

Apologies for all the typos in my earlier post, by the way. Arguing with a forceful cat that no, he can't have second and third breakfast nor is it time for lunch somewhat distracted me.

Baileyonice · 12/08/2026 09:14

Because its relevant to my initial comment that you are responding to:

"Bollocks. Feminism was legitimised by interchangeability. That the sexes overlap both cognitively & psychologically was the justification for equality. There's a reason why apes don't qualify for equal treatment.
The left has long been about equality & self determination not being limited by morphology so its ludicrous to suggest its only materiality that justifies its principles."

I noticed you have problems keeping up with what a thread is about so it my help if read all the comments on it before responding.

You also don't seem to have any historical knowledge or personal experience regarding how women weren't considered as cognitive & psychological equals & how this was/is weaponised against their access to employment, education & decision making. They were (& still are by many) considered as 'the weaker sex' not just because of their bodily limitations but their presumed mental ones.

This is the blind spot for sex realists who don't (or can't) reckon with how ideas influence perceptions & actions that oppress women nor do they understand the implications particularly given there has been a recent renaissance of these ideas that are being popularised by the right to young men. While you people have been obsessively sticking your noses into other peoples genitals the patriarchy has been busy laying their ground work that effectively sex realists enable.

I just went back in the thread to find Bailey's comment about ladybrains, but it must have been on another thread. So on one thread he's arguing for the existence of ladybrain and on another against it.
