I can’t wait to see who drafts my girl Enes Kanter Freedom. 😂

In a video, the former New York Knicks and Boston Celtics star said: 'After careful consideration and reviewing the current eligibility guidelines, I’m officially declaring myself a @WNBA prospect.

'If simply declaring who you are is all that’s required, then I meet every single requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA.

'My team and I have carefully examined the WNBA’s eligibility criteria and governing framework surrounding self-identification and inclusion. Based on the current guidelines, I can and am officially declaring my eligibility for the upcoming WNBA draft in April 2027.”

”See you at training camp.”

There are no trans women in the WNBA. About nine trans athletes in high school teams in the whole USA.

How do you know? I thought we couldn't always tell?

Do you mean 'out' trans women? For all we know, some pass so flawlessly that we can't possibly know how many there are. Presumably the same in the NBA - choc full of women passing as 7' men probably.

Any player who passes a sex screening test when they are finally brought in will be celebrated as they should be.

Talkinpeace · 09/08/2026 16:38

I can think of at least one player in the WNBA who everyone is watching to see what that player decides to do when the WNBA decides to start sex screening.

Brittney Griner is female.
If she was not, Putin would have shouted "cheat" when she was playing in Russia
(they will have had lots of time to check on her in their prison system)

But sure, let's allow misogynistic men take the piss out of women's sport. Let's declare trans people the real emergency, because who wants to discuss stuff like inequality of access and sponsorship, and widespread abuse by coaches, when we could have cis men showboating about how they're our saviours. How incredibly constructive.

The best way to save women's sport remains paying to attend it. Which everyone should because it's brilliant fun.

I mean… also, there is at least one player who refused to do sex screening or failed sex screening in the past who is one of the highest paid female football players in the world.

But sure… let’s focus on making sure those players are allowed to continue within football because the football association refuses to change the policy to protect female players. And yet… women and female athletes are right here discussing “stuff like inequality of access and sponsorship” but it is all dismissed by you. Isn’t that a hypocritical stance you have there?

Gosh, yes. If only we had equality of access and sponsorship, all those 6 foot 10 women - ie females - out there would have had a chance to play pro basketball.

Or am I chasing another 🐿[?], in which case apologies.

So, here we have the ‘so few’ argument. Of course, having done the reading and women’s groups having done the sums, ‘only a few’ male people can cause significant detriment and harm to thousands of female players over a lifetime in sport.

Apparently though, we are to believe that this either doesn’t happen or is acceptable collateral to help these male athletes stay happy and healthy.

“Let's declare trans people the real emergency, because who wants to discuss stuff like inequality of access and sponsorship, and widespread abuse by coaches, when we could have cis men showboating about how they're our saviours.”

This is just distraction.

This is not an issue limited to ‘male people with transgender identities’. This is also an issue of male people with bodies formed around the production of small gametes who not only produce testosterone in typical male levels in their working testes but also have a body that processes that testosterone to virulise to any degree not available to female athletes.

This is a call to the Basketball organisations around the world to bring their policies into line with the clear policy standard now set by the OIC.

Also, just because there are so few male players with transgender identities in the competitions, doesn’t mean that this will remain the case with the current policy. It is the policy that is being tested here and the acceptance of the league for the action being taken.

However, it is also distraction to then declare that women should be focused on other issues that one person or a group of people want to set as their personal focus. Directing female activists attention to a list of someone’s personal political focus in this way can be considered misogynist behaviour.

“The best way to save women's sport remains paying to attend it.”

No. I’d argue it is not the ‘best way’. It is one way. And if the sport has been rendered unfair and unsafe for female players, it is a lower priority to making it safe for those already playing.

But right from the start this is what we said would happen. No one would listen to women, we need men to do something for it to be listened to. It saddens me too.

As it stands though, I love it. I’d never heard of these stunning and brave women before and I wish them all the best.

Enes Kanter is relatively well known for his link to the Gulen movement.
This is not his first rodeo.
There are a number of articles on the BBC website about him.

For one, I can't wait to see him/her in killer heels! And I'm loving the attention and ridicule it is bringing.

But another part of me is so sad that we have to wait for the men to speak up and parody it so that it gets taken seriously.

Until then it seems like women must suffer endless vilification and pressure to STFU.

murasaki · 09/08/2026 15:20

Indeed. If TPA wants their child's identity to be accepted, they have to also accept these lovely ladies are who they say they are.

Can't have it both ways.

But they are women! They say they are! Why shouldn't they join the roster?

Exactly! TransP is being very transphobic gatekeeping their womanhood!

acceptance without exception amirite??

This is where I am. I'm angry that it's taking Men to get the WNBA to clarify what their definition of the W in WNBA means but this is on Women. We are where we are because too few Women are prepared to risk anything standing up for actual biological Womens rights.
As someone who came to this via Sport (thanks Caster) it's disappointing that it has take 17 years and the intervention of Men to even get to this point.
Tennis is now using a cheek swab, nothing short of the same in the WNBA should be acceptable.
I'm certain there are numerous players in the WNBA that have the SRY gene and, in this case, I'd like to see that as enough to exclude them.
No exceptions for CAIS or Swyers in Basketball.

So how many have we got now?

Enes Freedom
Royce White
Adam Francisco

MassiveWordSalad · 09/08/2026 13:13

I foresee the creation of a new gender incoming, à la Sturgeons’s ‘rapist gender’. Obviously it should be called Baller gender 🏀

I see fairness isn’t mentioned in the WNBPA statement with their other lofty aims.

They say

Justice
Equity

Thats what’s I’d get them on

Nothatisall · 09/08/2026 09:26

I for one think they’re stunning and brave for coming out of retirement, to finally be their true selves and play on the women’s team.

I’m not sure why so many people who ordinarily support a self selecting group of men doing this are getting upset. It is a mystery why having to play by their own rules upsets and enrages them so much, perhaps they need to educate themselves.

Looking forward to seeing a WMBA team as progressive and inclusive as the flying bats. Hopefully a few more of these newly declared women will step up to play / coach.

With a bit of luck these players will show those bigots that it’s feelings matter most in women’s competitive sport. You go girls!

Thanks for highlighting this.

On the topic of cycling, what happened to the male cyclist who wanted to cycle for Great Britain - I can't remember his name and my Google search didn't find it- his mum was just as delusional.

Emily Bridges. I'm not sure what he's up to now though.
