I know this doesn't belong here but given the bollocks from the GLP about issues that do I thought people might be interested.

It's about Professor Jason Arday, a Cambridge academic. The story started when there was a claim that large chunks of his PhD thesis had been taken from another (sometimes not even changing typo errors) published a few years earlier. His justification is that he's autistic and his way of coping is 'mimicry'.

Sine then his many claims about his charity work, fundraising and physical exploits have come under increasing scrutiny - much from the Guardian - and are unravelling fast. He's having to backtrack and 'explain' a lot. He's claimed to have been on a TV programme that he never was and it was chronologically impossible for him to be on it. He has claimed a lot of nasty harassment but has no evidence of it, no photos, no messages, and didn't report any of it to the police. (Well he claims he did once, but the police have no record of it and the story doesn't stack up.)

What does the GLP have to do with it? They're organising an open letter in his support, claiming that there is nothing to see here except that he's a victim of vile racism.

Support for a left wing cause that bears no relationship to the facts? Where have I heard that before?

Accusations of fascism are even less convincing when misspelled, I find.

From his resignation statement:

He said that he had tried to continue in his post because of a belief “in the values of higher education, in rigorous scholarship, and in the transformative power of universities”

He said what now??? Sorry, I have only one comment - ROFL😂😂😂

Or to be more considered about it... he's STILL at it. He just doesn't get it. After everything that's been found, the plagiarism and all the other debunked or backtracked claims, he says he believes in academic rigour. I think you have to seriously consider what's going on in his head.

How has it got anything to do with the trans stuff youre all so obsessed with? Or are you just all out (openly) facism now?

If you are familiar with this board, you'll have seen lots about the GLP, and the people and groups they support.

If you think this is fascism, I suggest you read the piece in Spiked, linked above. You sound like one of those referred to in the article (written, FYI, by a very well respected black commentator):

an identity politics that compels intelligent people to subordinate the pursuit of truth to tribal loyalty.

I don't think I hate anybody, and I certainly don't hate anybody in advance of knowing anything about them!

You might be the kind of person I really like - a fair-minded, objective, rational thinker, firmly grounded in facts and reality but with with a sense of humour that tends toward the fantastical.

This board is full of posters like that, which is why I like it here - but if you stay away from it you wouldn't know that, would you?

However I think all people have rights to live as they wish. Including trans people. And ive signed a petition or two with good law project.
I dont read this board because it gives me the rage. And its the same point over and over. In my opinion and experience the obsession with trans people has made the feminism board less accessible and less active. Except for those who believe feminism = anti trans.

Feminism is about women and girls. Sorry if you mistakenly thought it was about men. I can quite understand why you would, given the amount of energy given over to what men want everywhere in society.

The fact that some people identify as being left wing without being left wing does not mean that we don't still need a coherent concept of 'left wing'. (See also 'woman').

An ideology that prioritises individual wants over collective needs is not left wing.

They don't think they are individualists at all. They are identarian, which the see as a kind of collectivism. Identities replace class.

Anti-racism operates within that framework as well.

Tbh you lot are making it about men!
Tired of debating but being feminist and trans inclusive/ally are not mutually exclusive.
I am a feminist.
I also refuse to hate people who are trans or have gender dysphoria. I know you lot dont believe in it. You dont always have to experience somethinh to believe and support it. I do it every day.
Im not interested in hearing the stats you will now come at me with relating to crimes committed by transwomen in womens spaces. I know.
When you assess risk you need to weigh up the severity and likelihood of harm. I am certain that the stats will tell you that the harmful impact of this rhetoric is greater than the actual harm to women by transwomen.

I agree that she had a point about promoting academics beyond their capabilities in a bid towards equality and inclusion but her actual words are problematic as written. It also seems she realised the need to explain further.

Stock might not have intended to say that nobody with dyslexia should be an academic, but I think it’s a stretch to deny that, as written, it reads that she’s implying that a) being dyslexic is an ‘intellectual disability’ and b) disqualifies one from scholarly life. It’s literally one sentence after the other. It’d have been better not to have included that second sentence at all. As we know, words matter.

There is currently some bafflement on social media about why Cambridge authorities are disclaiming the accusations about Arday with such aggressive, self-satisfied certainty. I have a possible explanation that is only secondarily connected to skin color. Namely: at some point, the university sector decided that intellectual disability was something that should be mitigated, rather than treated as disqualifying one from scholarly life. Conditions such as dyslexia and dyspraxia, autism, ADHD, speech delay (and so on) were now to be treated as unfair obstacles to a person’s dreams of pursuing an academic career, rather than constituting evidence they were unsuited. And since over-diagnosis of mental health conditions is rife in the sector, and everyone is frightened of being called discriminatory, the predictable upshot was that — at least in some cases — straightforward midwittery came to be treated like an excusable intellectual disability as well.

And looking just at the university sector, and I’m thinking as I type this, I’d argue that making allowances for SpLDs is not the slippery slope problem in relation to not knowing where you stop once you start making those allowances.

From my perspective, it’s not the reasonable adjustments themselves that have become problematic, it’s the poor judgement of the decision makers. Incontestably ‘intellectual’ decision makers I’d add who have allowed their own virtue signalling to prevent them from knowing where to stop. Instead, the virtue signallers have given in to the demands of some individual’s unreasonable allowances for their SpLDs (either real or perceived).

Similar to the slippery slope of Canada’s MAID. The idea of terminally ill people being able to end their lives has merit but it’s increasingly problematic misuse is the fault of the Canadian lawmakers who have given in to demands for the expansion of eligibility. When they could have said ‘no’.

Even 30 years ago a person with an intellectual disability could be an academic if they could do the work to meet the required standards.

That's the context.

What's changed in recent years, what Stock is talking about, is that people who could not meet the standard because of intellectual disability are seen as needing to be helped through with accommodations as a matter of equity.

It's like a rugby player with a congenital abnormality. That might make playing to a professional level difficult or unusual, but if the person can in fact play at that level, they can be a professional rugby player. But imagine if his disability was such that he was too slow, or was too fragile to be tackled, and we said teams had to mitigate this as a matter of fair access.

That is what Stock is talking about, and it's not just about pushing some academics beyond their abilities. It's a massive issue with how they understand access, equity, and the role of the university.

I think you've mixed up 'disagreeing with' and 'hating'. I don't hate people I disagree with, just as I am a feminist who is not anti-trans - I think transpeople should have exactly the same rights as everybody else, no more, no less.
That's fair, isn't it? Not anti-trans at all.

I disagree with you about this board being 'the same point over and over' but given that it's called the Feminism: Sex and gender discussions board, it's logical that it will have a lot of discussions about sex and gender.

I think anybody with an interest in society and people and rights and wrongs is likely to be interested how such a tiny percentage of the population, who already enjoy all the same human rights as anybody else, has managed to have such an extraordinary influence on so many aspects of society - the media, education, medicine, legislation, politics, medicine..

I can't think of any other minority group in society has achieved such a high profile, and such disproportionate influence in such a short time, can you?
It's a fascinating topic.

It also has practical implications in everyday life for women, so there are practical as well as theoretical reasons for it being discussed a lot.

But if you don't want to join in those kinds of discussions, you do youSmile
That said, you did join in, didn't you?

fascinating, do post an actual argument backed up with facts and evidence if you feel like it

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/08/2026 00:37

We’re only making it about men because other “feminists” insist on centring them to the detriment of women and girls. We can’t even have our own fucking rights movement without entitled men barging in to take it over and simpering women handing it to them.

I don't hate trans people.
I have had what is referred to as gender dysphoria.
I have experienced it, and believe that children experiencing it deserve love, support and- crucially - the truth that they can never change their biological sex.
I don't have any stats about crimes committed by transwomen in women's spaces to give you.
It is sufficient to know that transwomen shouldn't be in women's spaces, regardless of what they get up to there.
For me, it's a matter of principle, not of statistics.

Can I still be one of what you call 'you lot' despite not conforming to what you seem to think 'you lot' all think?

Facism is a tiny religious sect founded in 1968 by a young man living in a London squat. He had Itchycoo Park by the Small Faces playing one night after he'd taken LSD, and the rest is history.

Gymnopedie · 06/08/2026 01:08

@avilsdedvocate

However I think all people have rights to live as they wish. Including trans people.

But you don't actually mean that. Because your second sentence contradicts the first. Transwomen want to - and do - use women's loos and changing rooms. Some of them demand to be allowed to work in rape crisis centres or to be members of breastfeeding groups. To name but two.

Many women don't want people with a penis, XY chromosomes and small gametes in their loos or changing rooms, rape crisis centres or breast feeding groups.

So if transwomen live the life they wish, that means a lot of women who don't. Therefore you can't say that you believe all people have a right to live as they wish, AND that transpeople do. Because the wishes are mutually exclusive.
