I know this doesn't belong here but given the bollocks from the GLP about issues that do I thought people might be interested.

It's about Professor Jason Arday, a Cambridge academic. The story started when there was a claim that large chunks of his PhD thesis had been taken from another (sometimes not even changing typo errors) published a few years earlier. His justification is that he's autistic and his way of coping is 'mimicry'.

Sine then his many claims about his charity work, fundraising and physical exploits have come under increasing scrutiny - much from the Guardian - and are unravelling fast. He's having to backtrack and 'explain' a lot. He's claimed to have been on a TV programme that he never was and it was chronologically impossible for him to be on it. He has claimed a lot of nasty harassment but has no evidence of it, no photos, no messages, and didn't report any of it to the police. (Well he claims he did once, but the police have no record of it and the story doesn't stack up.)

What does the GLP have to do with it? They're organising an open letter in his support, claiming that there is nothing to see here except that he's a victim of vile racism.

Support for a left wing cause that bears no relationship to the facts? Where have I heard that before?

Oh no! He's lost James O'brien

James O’Brien: I feel like a mug for defending Arday https://share.google/Lvytjk3I7Td3GCfpK

I'll try to find an archive of the article.

Forgive me but dismissing allegations against a person only because of that person's skin colour, isn't that a teensy bit racist?

I can kind of get though, in an atmosphere where there are some people actively looking to find reasons to shit on black academics.you might assume, when you see someone shitting on a black academic it's not coming from a place of truthfulness. It's almost like the boy who cried wolf (or the American podcaster who cried DEI). The threatening of the actual journalist with the police is where the whole thing immediately looks genuinely dodgy even if you didn't know the full rest of the story.
I mean, it still shows a certain lack of curiosity and even tribalism on the part of people like JOB but I don't find it that surprising it can happen.

I suspect he heard about the whole thing second or even third hand, thoroughly wokewashed, and his knee jerk reaction was 'how dare they!'. I sympathise, it would have been my reaction not that long ago. In the innocent days when hearing about a woman committing a sexual and/or violent crime wouldn't immediately make me suspicious.

I'll give O'Brien the benefit of some doubt because I'm not certain if he considers himself a journalist. If he does then I've no time at all for his excuses.

Oof, that Atlantic article.

Aside from anything, doing a Master's while having the reading age of a three year old? What was his Master's in; Lift-The-Flap Spot books?

Still he's guaranteed more book sales than he would have done before this story broke. I can't decide if that's genius on his part or a Harry-And-Meghan level of car-crash publishing. Possibly both?

I watched two discussions on Sky News at different times yesterday, different presenters, and was surprised that both said very firmly that JA denies all accusations and was cleared of plagiarising his doctorate after an investigation, with the implication that any further criticism of him was malicious and unfounded.

I was surprised, because Sky isn't Woke Central, they usually take a pretty middle of the road positions.

I must watch the newspaper review tonight to see if they are still defending him.

I've seen a couple of reports that only mention the easily-dismissed Nathan Cofnas as the source of the accusations of plagiarism, leaving out the fact that Jack Grove at the Times Higher would have done likewise had he not been threatened with/by the police.

I suspect a lot of people are going to feel foolish as the evidence mounts up..
Not least Cambridge Univ.

Yet again the so-called progressive left is giving an open goal to the right over Jason Arday. Anyone with a brain can see that yes, there are racists and people with ill motivations pushing on an open door. But that doesn't mean that there is nothing to see behind that door. And calling anyone who dares to ask those critical questions bigots or worse seems to be par for the course. The same people who are doing this have reacted similarly when left-leaning women have pointed out that there are conflicts in gifting their rights to trans identified men, calling such women bigots. And then rather than facing and dealing with those conflicts, they've left it an issue that the right is able to run with and called anyone on the left who points out that it's a problem, a fascist. Something similar is happening with the debacle around DEI, higher education and the Jason Arday debacle.

We now know who did the plagiarism review of Arday's thesis for Liverpool John Moores last year ... and it turns out to be Kehinde Andrews.

The thing I don’t understand is, if someone writes a book or anything that is published, do they not understand that people will read what has been published and those who know that the things mentioned didn’t happen or were not possible (such as an event or programme that never existed) and publicly discuss it?

If he is the fantasist/grifter type (which I am guessing is likely though of course the investigations aren't finished) the. In a sense that doesn't matter. He still gets the money and fame (or noteriety). Normally the path out for these people is to find Jesus, redemption of some sort and the do the rounds/write another book talking about their experiences of having been caught and how they tricked people. Eg the real life Wolf of Wall Street guy who actually went to prison for major fraud and much later was advertising speaking events with "as seen in the film" as a hook. He has several options

  1. Double down and continue with support from the GLS and other true believers. Talk about how he's a victims of racism
  2. Go the other way and join the very lucrative American "how I left the left" speaking tour and tell people how liberal identity politics allowed him to get away with his scheme
  3. Politically neutral mental health type talks about how his specific condition of, eg pathological lying, has influenced his life. Side hustle on how to get away with lies/spot liers and fantasists

Loads of options basically

He did find Jesus - Jesus College Cambridge.

I used to think highly intelligent people were automatically less credulous, but I don't now. I don't know which is worse: to be credulous or quite cynically to ignore inconvenient evidence for personal advantage. There's been a lot of both in this case and it won't have come as any surprise to anyone who's been following the gender wars.
