'The broadcaster and writer Rod Liddle has become embroiled in another spot of trouble involving women and telephones, collecting a police caution after officers were called to his home following a heated domestic dispute.
Liddle, the former editor of the BBC Today programme, was held by police for five hours after a furious row with Alicia Monckton, the 23-year-old for whom he left his wife, after she discovered their text messages.
Liddle was arrested after he and Monckton, who are expecting a baby in September, had the bust-up at their London home on Thursday afternoon. This ended in his girlfriend phoning 999.
Although she hung up before anyone answered, the police traced the call and turned up an hour later. By then, the row had subsided and Monckton told the police that there was nothing to worry about.
The police disagreed and took Liddle, who at 45 is 22 years Monckton's senior, to a south London police station where, after five hours, he agreed to accept a caution for common assault.
However, a furious Liddle, now an associate editor at The Spectator - where he met Monckton - has told The Independent on Sunday that he regretted accepting a caution. "I'm so furious and upset about it," he said. "If I'd had enough spine I would have said no to the caution. They couldn't have charged me."
The row, Liddle admitted, had been explosive - but he denied hitting Monckton. "We had this row and we were shouting at each other. I said, 'Well, phone the police', and she said she would. I thought she was only joking. She didn't talk to them, just hung up. An hour later the coppers got here. She begged them to go away, but they wouldn't."
Monckton confirmed that she hadn't been hurt. "There was a physical struggle with a suitcase, but he didn't hit me," she said.'

His writing was always supportive of women's spaces and women's sports.

In later life, he mellowed and was a funny radio presenter, actually very warm and welcoming to his guests. I surprised myself by liking him on Times Radio. Perhaps having a daughter brought about a change in him as he aged. I have seen it with other men I didn't like in their younger years.

He’s denied it though: he said he made a false admission in exchange for a police caution (not a conviction) as it was the quickest way to be released. TBF there doesn’t seem to be any pattern of abusive behaviour from him, so I’d be inclined to think that’s possible.

A person can do both good and bad in life. I know I have.
It seems unreasonable to judge a person purely on the bad, but ignore the good.
If we only ever acknowledged the bad that people did, I think pretty much everyone would be in the same boat.

But it is interesting how some people seem very keen to damn the man for all eternity for having an argument with his girlfriend and making jokes.

I remember back in 2021 when hardly anyone would say in public that men weren’t women. Rod Liddle said it. So yeah, I was grateful for that. I disagreed with pretty much everything else he said but they were desperate times.

Loads of GC women have no standards at all. As long as someone is GC, that’s all that matters to them.

As others have said upthread, using someone's death as an opportunity to vent fury about them online seems disrespectful. It doesn't mean I necessarily approve of someone - just that I'm an adult able to exercise restraint while family and friends are grieving.

I didn't say I found it funny. I was explaining what it was. It wasn't literal reportage. Sometimes people write things that are not supposed to be taken literally. And some people seem to be struggling with the concept.

I mean, really fucking odd. When you think about it. Totally random.

If by that you mean that many GC women understand that fallible human beings are a mixture of good and less good, or even bad, then I'll put my hand up and say I'm one of them. I prefer to make up my own mind about people, particularly if I don't know them personally, rather than follow the in-crowd in condemning others for wrong-think or not "being kind".

OP, you could try making a post about various other men and then come on and tell us off for not condemning them, if you like? Or berate us on here for what other women elsewhere do. I mean it's up to you, there are probably lots of things you could scold us for.
