I think this is a bit of a non story really - there’s always been a rule that the teams in 4ncl div 1 needed at least 1 male and 1 female and the female team would have been aware throughout. In fact it used to be that teams in all 4ncl divisions needed at least 1 male and 1 female, though now just div 1 (div 2 can have an u16 rather than both male/female). Several years back there was a team that was 7 female/1 male and also rose up the divisions.
I agree that the lack of girls /women in chess is that they find other things to do with their time, to get to top level chess requires a certain amount of obsession and there’s little in the way of money/other rewards

Treaclewell · 03/08/2026 08:30

Another thing I came across was a lad who, between his moves, would wander the room overlooking other players. When I commented to his teacher that mine were finding this behaviour distracting, I got a "that's my boy" smile of approval - it was his son. More gamesmanship as part of the tournament. I don't think girls like it. Most boys don't either. They are there to play chess, not male Mean Girl stuff.

Treaclewell · 02/08/2026 13:10

Oh, and the school club being run by me didn't seem to attract a lot of girls. Our team was boys. We had problems with matches falling on football practice evenings. Even though we were winning them.

Treaclewell · 02/08/2026 13:06

Update on my derail. He stayed with chess, becoming a county under-18s champion. He hasn't been doing it in competition since, having studied law, and is now a High Court Judge. (Dances around like Bellatrix Black singing "I taught a High Court Judge!") Not in any sort of cases which interest us. G&S earworm. too.
Sorry for derail.

Surely the gender inequality between the level of male/female comes from the same place as darts etc? In that whilst women can perform just as well as men (that there are no gender differences for ability unlike say track), there is a massive difference in the ability of women to comfortably practice the sport due to misogyny.

I don’t know a great deal about either so I’m prepared to be told I’m wrong.

(I don’t think ability is the right word for above but the correct word is not coming to me!)

Edited

It seems quite a leap to say it must be misogyny when there is a more natural explanation, to do with average differences in interest in different things.

I’m curious whether you think the big skew in men vs women who know pi to 1000 or 10000 places is also misogyny, for example. Or just that most people don’t care enough to do it, and that those very few who do are more likely to be men.

There is also some sexism and structural disincentives

I know nothing about chess. DH takes DS to club, he sits in a cafe with the other dads that drop off. When they go for competition weekends the club pays for a twin room for him and DS, and he watches chess for hours then the club goes out for a meal and talk about chess for hours. Had I ever played chess as a child or ever cared about it perhaps I would partake more but no thank you. Also DS doesn't really want to share a room with me anyway.

When I drop and collect from club I'll do it screeching in at the last minute with other kids in tow like the other mothers because I'm multitasking.

Most of the kids coming out seem to be either white autistic British boys, or with parents from a country where chess is a more revered sport like Russia/China/India. Could be ND boys as well, but definitely with parents who have a history of playing chess without the ewww boring factor we have here.

Yes I think the format of tournaments is a structural barrier. Not many women can take frequent full days out of their schedule unless they are full-time chess players (chicken and egg). And for girls, being in an environment that progressively gets closer to 100% male isn’t that encouraging.

I still think lack of interest is the main explanation though (and that not being obsessively interested in chess is the normal position, not some sort of strange aberration needing explanation).

Treaclewell · 02/08/2026 10:10

I am reminded of a report I was given by a member rof my primary school chess club and team who went to loin the local chess club. One man spent his time smoking and blowing smoke over the boy. It was explained that this was part of the game with laughter. It wasn't what the boy wanted. If there is that degree of gamesmanship at club level I can't see many women liking it.

It’s never seemed that mysterious to me why there aren’t many female competitive chess players.

Mostly, the same reason that there aren’t that many women on the list of people who have memorised pi to 10,000 places. Lack of narrow obsession. There is also some sexism and structural disincentives, but I don’t think they are the major issue.

Igmum · 01/08/2026 12:47

IIRC one of the chess associations produced a report on male/female/trans participation in the early days of the gender madness. Its conclusion was that, while no one knew why, there was a clear difference between women’s and men’s success in chess and so, to prevent disadvantage, single sex categories should be protected. I always liked this example of strategic and long-sighted thinking from players of a strategic and long-sighted game.

I’m torn over this and would really like to see an exception made given that the original drafters of this rule presumably never thought there would be an all-female team so the one man rule was probably put in without much thought. But I can see why people are calling for the existing rules to be upheld.

KarcherK5 · 01/08/2026 12:33

There have been trans players in 4NCL before and they played as their declared gender, I don’t know if that rule has changed?

LightningTree · 01/08/2026 12:26

It’s just the law of unintended consequences at work. The mixed sex rule was introduced to increase female participation at the top level. Equality works both ways so, irritating as it is, I think the team just need to accept it and move on.

IrnBruAndDietCoke · 01/08/2026 12:09

No I think it’s a double standard to say a transman or nb person should be able to replace a biological male. People suggesting this need to give their heads a wobble because even joking about it weakens the argument that men shouldn’t be in single sex women’s sports.

FromFrickToFuck · 01/08/2026 11:42

He also said "the captains" (I didn't ask of which division teams) were asked about this rule at the beginning of the season and no one wanted the rule dropped then so I suspect whoever voted wasn't expecting She Plays to get promoted.

FromFrickToFuck · 01/08/2026 11:41

I broke my cardinal rule of never asking my autistic child a follow up question about their specialist subject ... as I said he plays in the 4NCL but in a lower division. There is one girl on one of his club's teams. I asked him how, if there are so few girls at that level - where do all the division 1 teams (which have 8 boards per team rather than the 6 lower down) actually find their minimum 1 female team player? He says they are actively scouted, either in the lower divisions, other competitions or looked up online via their FIDE rating or ECF contact.

Because the division 1 teams are a 'selection of random players' he thinks the team comradery argument is not a good one as it's not like the lower divisions. However his team all stay the weekend in the same hotel, eat together and when not playing are going over each other's games - surely it's the same in div 1? He didn't really have an answer for that.

He says there's no reason boys play better than girls - I'm paraphrasing here as this bit went on for a while and I zoned out - it's about practising etc.

He also says the organisers are "well transphobic, just like you mum they think TW are still men" and so the sudden chess onset gender dysphoria idea wouldn't work.

Wac90 · 01/08/2026 09:36

I suspect the good of ensuring mixed teams is outweighed by the negative for this particular team. I feel for them, but the rule isn’t misogynistic, quite the opposite.

murasaki · 31/07/2026 23:11

Totally agree. It was designed to increase female participation, if handled badly as they felt 'token'. But it was a rule that said a member of the opposite sex, so it can't come as a surprise to them on promotion that it also applies to them. Annoying but there you go. I suspect when put in place, no one expected a fully women's team to get promoted, but they have so....

RogueFemale · 31/07/2026 23:08

WarriorN · 31/07/2026 10:29

Bonkers rules for this chess league which stipulates there must be one male on the team. Ironically from rules designed to increase female participation.

I gather the rule is that any team must include at least one opposite sex team member. They must have know this before? It's not an anti-woman rule, it's a mixed-sex rule.

SadiraOfTyr · 31/07/2026 18:15

The league is apparently the only one in the UK that requires mixed teams in division A.

I don’t know much about chess but I do know about cycling and triathlon and if you enter a mixed event you do actually have to
show up with a mixed team and no one has an issue with this.

GeneralPeter · 31/07/2026 18:07

To be a bit provocative:

While junior chess can be unwelcoming for girls, the main reason there aren't many strong girl players is that they have better things to do.

Almost all children decide they aren't interested in playing and studying chess at the obsessive level that is needed to stay competitive as they get older.

99% of boys decide this, and 99.9% of girls. It's a sensible decision. Unless you are a competitive chess player (I'm not either), it's the decision you took.

Given this, measures to ensure girls win chess prizes that they would not qualify for if sex were disregarded are pretty questionable. No it's not the worst injustice in the world. But none of the usual justifications apply either:

It's not like there is a great societal need to have lots of strong female chess players. If you need a chess puzzle solving, a computer can do it. It's not a representational matter (like parliament). It doesn't affect wider outcomes (like board representation). And it's not because it's a different game (like sports). Chess is exactly the same game for both sexes, and the main reason one sex doesn't do as well as the other is that, on average, they sensibly choose not to.

FromFrickToFuck · 31/07/2026 13:53

My son plays in the 4NCL. It feels very male dominated. I didn't realise there even had to be mixed teams - he's in a lower league and it's all boys/men apart from the She Plays to Win teams and possibly the odd unicorn of a girl.

Fury as UK’s only all-female chess team promoted – then told they must recruit a man

GeneralPeter · 31/07/2026 13:10

I think if you join a division that requires mixed teams you can’t really complain when the rule is applied to you too.

There is no shortage of leagues /competitions that lack that rule.

lcakethereforeIam · 31/07/2026 12:34

murasaki · 31/07/2026 10:33

It's a shame, but if they want to play in that division I guess they'll have to. My suggestion would be to recruit the youngest eligible boy and hopefully they can knock any burgeoning misogyny on the head.

Or, and I'm not sure about chess's views on the matter, a transman..... that might satisfy everyone!

I was wondering about that. What about someone who claims to be NB? Perhaps that would depend if it was a male or female NB 😃
