Ahhh thank you. I think your additional information helps me. I was wondering how could he possibly not have known? Your additional info makes me think that it was only a problem when the "wife" was discovered to be a Chinese spy. I think at that point the diplomat played the "I had no idea, get out of jail" card. That's the only possible explanation that makes any sense.
Perhaps ( almost certainly ) the Chinese knew of the diplomat's tastes and tailored the whole situation from the start.
Prior to your additional info I had a mental vision of the Chinese spy having a meeting with his superiors and there being a big "You want me to do what??? A false moustache and trench coat is one thing, but no fukking way am I doing that! " followed by copious arm twisting and a Chinese wrist burn or two.
