Here's a blow-by-blow first-person account of what it is like to have the new sports sex test that is being decried as invasive and dehumanising and (in a rather extravagant bending of the facts) a genital inspection etc.

After such a big build-up, prepare to be.... underwhelmed. But please do stop scrolling now if you don't want to read the distressing details:

"I open my mouth and feel the swab brushing the inside of my cheeks for about 20 seconds. The practitioner carefully places the sample in a small plastic bag and then pops it into a sealed envelope. I sign the back of it."

We definitely get people on here who want to understand, and then we get very definite TRA's.

And to me the shift happened when. Deadlifter picked Helle, the person who is absolutely the most logical, rational, scientific, evidenced and with the memory of an elephant and decided that they are the one who is the most disappointing.

No shit 😄

Agreed. It's almost as if they took deliberate aim at her for those reasons.🤔

I would also add that suggesting that we Google the evidence that @Deadlifter was unable to produce was also a bit of a giveaway.

As for the idea that a National and World champion in something or other is made anxious by a bunch of GC women on an anonymous forum; pull the other one.

"we work alongside respectful trans woman who we can see every day are not taking anything from us at all."

I have no issue with being alongside a trans person at the supermarket - their trolley is no different to mine. I'd have no trouble sitting at work with them - paperwork is paperwork. In fact, I have no issue being in any environment where sex is irrelevant.

I have a problem when biological woman are put at a disadvantage because a biological man wants to be seen and treated as a woman.

If this was about the sport, then those who have been banned from competing in the women's category would start competing in the men's category. Invariably this doesn't happen because the individuals know that they don't have a hope of winning in the men's category, which is why they are competing in the women's category, where their higher proportion of fast-twitch muscle fibres, lower baseline body fat, larger heart, higher haemoglobin, better oxygen delivery to muscles, greater lung volumes, lower diaphragm, stronger ligaments, denser bones, and longer limbs all give an advantage.

It allows athletes who would be mediocre at best in the men's field to be champions in the women's field.

Exactly.

The entire premise has nothing to do with 'working alongside', and absolutely everything to do with 'competing against'.

You still think ‘on here’ is the only place people have been discussing this for years. Lots of people have spent equal time and energy learning about this issue, and still disagree with you. Lots of people have life experience you might not have - we work alongside respectful trans woman who we can see every day are not taking anything from us at all. People with a wider lens can also see things you’re not seeing - eg. How your views interact with the rise of the far right etc.

I wish I’d been politer - I’ve said that. But you have lost it at a single person disagreeing with you; I don’t think you should kid yourself that you’d have fared better with hordes of people disagreeing with you.

I genuinely hope you manage to extricate yourself from this one day and look back like ‘woah, that was a weird time

@Deadlifter This was you at 17:05 yesterday:

Im saying plenty of academics and medical professionals think the test is unscientific.

You then had 7 hours to post even one piece of evidence, but you didn't. That's why you took some flak. Did you think that your authoritative voice as a 'World record holder' was sufficient? That's not how you change minds on here.

Can you point me to a place where I can respectfully discuss what it means to be trans, while disagreeing that trans women are women?

What do transpeople have to do with this? This is about testing people who want to participate in a sport for their sex.

“There are lots more dissenting voices outside of this forum, and you’ve stopped being able to see it at all.”

There are plenty of dissenting voices both on or outside this forum. We read and engage with those voices all of the time.

Dissent is irrelevant if the issues that are being used for dissent are not addressed through discussion and considering and exploring views. People express dissent on most aspects of life. So fucking what! It doesn’t make those reasons for dissent accurate, evidenced and moral just because it is ‘dissent’.

FFS! Women are dissenting to male people’s inclusion in a protected sports category that is for female people and looked at how you, personally, have just treated them!

Telling people that they are wrong and not then providing evidence to discuss that explores why those people are wrong is not ‘discussion’.

I think most of the people pointing out issues with your views last night have read very widely and have many read opposing views. We have discussed and explored those dissenting views on threads here for years!

I promise you that not everyone who disagrees with you had just misunderstood something.

Just to share with you all - one night on a mumsnet gender criticial thread made me feel anxious, less patient (sorry to some of you on that!) and just like… meaner and smaller.

I’m glad some of you seem to think you’ve found a kind of righteous anger after years of being told to be nice or kind, but I wish you’d directed it somewhere else instead of a tiny group of people who really aren’t affecting your lives or making you less safe (I know you think they are; they’re just not). You’re like people who’ve fallen for the small boats thing - an imagined bogeyman to fear and obsess over.

I’m going to ban myself commenting on a similar mumsnet thread again, as I don’t think it’s a space where people are able to engage in good faith anymore. It’s too obsessive.

I hope you all have ways to take care of yourselves - I think you’re doing each other a world of damage passing around and building up so much fear.

ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY TIMES

I'm just going to say it again. The representation of people in sport with a DSD is 140x that of people in the general population. There is a reason. The reason is that it gives an unfair advantage in sport.

When Usain bolt was running, he was pretty much winning every race. But the men around him had a fair stab at getting close or beating him. He won on his merits. When a woman races against an individual who has had the benefit of testosterone, they almost literally can't win. They may as well not show up.

Elite boy athletes break the women's world record speed for the 400m at the age of 14-15.

nutmeg7 · 29/07/2026 07:50

hallouminatus · 29/07/2026 00:26

In the Telegraph article, Fiona Tomas writes:

Under new rules issued by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), all athletes wanting to compete in the female category, irrespective of sport, will have to do the test to participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Games. This effectively bans transgender athletes and those with differences in sex development (DSD) from women’s sport, marking a move away from testosterone suppression policies that were previously used to determine the eligibility of such athletes.

She should have said something like:

"This effectively bans male athletes from women’s sport."

She could have added:

"Female athletes who are transgender or have DSDs will still be eligible for women's sport, dispite misinformation to the contrary. Previous policies allowed some male athletes with transgender identities or DSDs to participate in women's sports if they suppressed their testosterone"

Again and again I read about transgender people or people with DSDs being banned or excluded from something or other, and invariably it's not true. I generally assume that the writer is an activist who either knows they're lying but don't have any honest arguments, or they are unthinkingly repeating what other activists have said.

I don't think Fiona Tomas, the Telegraph's women's sports reporter, is an activist, so I don't understand why she writes something so obviously untrue - it really undermines trust in her reporting.

It would be unfair and unjustified to descriminate against or exclude any athlete just because they are transgender or have a DSD. Fortunately, nobody as far as I know, is doing or proposing any such thing.

I think she is fuzzy on scientific detail, so is inadvertently making misleading statements.

She also said the test was for XX vs XY but it is the SRY gene that matters, and I thought that was the core of the initial sports sex test.

Why do TRAs always wrap their barbs in some sort of pseudo-caring language?

Because they THINK they are being super witty, sarcastic and superior. They don't realize that it just makes them look sad and desperate.

They'll say anything to try and make us forget that all women want is safety from men in our spaces and fairness in sport. They just think women should be willing to give up our rights to please certain men and give them room in our spaces.

Dadalus · 29/07/2026 07:42

@Deadlifter
You said many pages ago that you don't have the answers - this is not surprising. You want there to be a solution that pleases everyone but there just isn't one.
On this forum anyone can argue and debate for either side, people have for many years, and nothing like a perfect solution has emerged. Neither has any particularly persuasive argument been made as to why women's sports shouldn't be protected.

There are other online spaces where the opposite view dominates, but these tend to occur where that viewpoint is protected by censorship and banning of alternatives.

Igneococcus · 29/07/2026 07:39

Deadlifter · 29/07/2026 07:20

Because whilst you’re used to this space, looking in it from the outside, it is genuinely distressing and painful to see.

one of you is describing the ‘head fuck’ of being disagreed with fairly mildly by one single person. There are lots more dissenting voices outside of this forum, and you’ve stopped being able to see it at all. People DO feel sorry for people who have fallen into an online rabbit hole or conspiracy theory etc, and whilst it might make you uncomfortable and I’m sure you don’t want my sympathy - I do feel sorry for you.

If the truth (that both Caster Semenya and Imane Khelif are male) is distressing this is a problem for the people who are distressed by it to deal with not for women who are defending women only sport. Lying doesn't solve anything and is the reason why we are in this situation.

DabOfPistachio · 29/07/2026 07:39

Because whilst you’re used to this space, looking in it from the outside, it is genuinely distressing and painful to see.
And this is it.
This space is our experience of being female and having our basic needs to privacy and fairness repeatedly belittled and dismissed. It is distressing and painful to constantly see just how little respect and empathy male people have for women.
This entire nonsense could be solved by male people simply respecting women and being fair to them, and working to find a way that works for all groups instead of insisting that women must put men's wants ahead of our own needs.
The fact that saying this creates such confusion and anger from trans activists just shows how deeply patriarchal trans ideology is.
So I don't know how to bridge that.
All I can suggest is try to see women as human beings with needs and basic human rights of our own? Understand that women deserve the right to privacy. To safety. To fair sports. That we have the right to say no to men. Etc etc.
Trans activists respecting and accepting those as basic human rights for women will get us 90% of the way to resolving this conflict.

And more emotional manipulation.

’you are all mean’

’you challenged my opinion that I posted on a publicly accessed forum’

’but whatabout these male athletes, they deserve to access female sports because there is only a few, and they are obviously more vulnerable than the female athletes, especially those they take the opportunities to compete from ‘

‘You are just wrong because I said so’

’you are bigots’

’you are all obsessed’

’you didn’t accept my emotionally reasoned points of view that had no evidence behind despite my telling you unnamed and unreferenced experts disagree with you’

‘you are all just uninformed and scared with it’

If you are not able to engage in civil discussions about a well documented and evidenced topic, I think perhaps that is an issue you need to address for your self.

The fact you resorted to personal attacks and insults last night was not because of posters asked you questions, that if you had thought about the issue as much as you claimed, you would be able to discuss. That was you showing how superficial your self proclaimed ‘kindness’ really is.

Yeah yeah yeah were such big nasty meanies aren't we? 🙄

all the signs saying decapitate - oh no wait that was trans activists

or that time when we said we'd pour piss ourselves if we didn't get our own way - oh no trans activists again

or that time when we besieged meetings banging on the windows and screaming - oh no you'll never guess who that was again

if you cannot understand that redefining women away from meaning "adult human female" and towards "adult human female oh and some men who feel like women" (cos all women feel the same amirite?) means that there is in effect nothing just for women then I can't help you with comprehension. How can we for example decide how many maternity beds we need to provide in an area if the numbers of women includes 'and some men'? How can we research the effect of a particular policy on women if it includes 'and some men'? How can we ensure a rape survivors support group for women is only for women if the definition includes 'and some men'?

all of this, this redefining of women to include 'and men performing female stereotypes' was done without anyone asking women if it was OK. Did you know risk assessments on transferring male prisoners to women's prisoners because they identified as women was only done on the man being transferred and not on the woman being locked up with him?

angry?? I'm absolutely fucking furious!

Seethlaw · 29/07/2026 07:16

@Deadlifter

I'm trans. I haven't found a more open-minded space to discuss being trans, the effects it has on my life, and the effects it has on other people's life, than here.

Women here are incredibly compassionate towards other women.
They are smart and educated, and systematically back their claims up with scientific evidence.

When I made my first thread, I was asked plenty of questions, just like you, but I enjoyed it, because it forced me to think about what I was saying, to think through what I believed, and to articulate my feelings and understanding.

This forum is not a bubble. Quite the contrary: it's a window. A window into the world of women who don't just submit when men ask them to. Yes, it's a wild world this window opens onto. It can be very overwhelming, and certainly feel incredibly alien, because we're not used to women saying No to men.

But ask yourself: do you really not want to explore the myriads of possibilities in a world when women don't have to submit to men?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 29/07/2026 07:15

"Oh you poor obsessed dears. Fancy imagining that men have been successfully taking places from women in sport? How could you think that men want access to women's changing rooms? small boats, bogeymen, right wing etc etc
Rest your fevered little brains and sit back while the men make all the decisions for you. Sleep now......."

😁

What would this tactic be called in the long list of manoeuvres displayed on this thread? Patronising? Through gritted teeth? Desperation?

Having started with the it's "your failure of understanding / curiosity / openness" it's ending with toxic little barbs about "meaner and smaller"

7/10 for effort though.

Helleofabore · 29/07/2026 07:14

This thread turned into a head fuck.

But I think it became illustrative of why reasoning based on vague claims and the emotionally manipulative catch all of

be kind!

fails.

So far, we have seen plenty of noise using fallacious argument points that all end up showing the person arguing does not understand competition. We have seen this with some expert activists regular in media or social media. It is a script that covers the following :

‘sex categories in humans are complicated’

’sport is for all people, it is a human right’

’but whatabout all these other competitors, they have natural advantages too?’

‘it is only a few, why is this considered an issue at all!’

’but sometimes they lose to female athletes’

’not all female athletes agree that this group should be excluded’

‘But these athletes can’t compete with male athletes!’

All of these fail because they are based on fallacies, are factually incorrect or they fail even at a philosophical level.

’sex categories in humans are complicated’

For the purpose of who gets access to protected category of sport, sex categorisation in humans is based on whether or not the human has the ability to produce and/or process testosterone in the typical male range.

This is reliably done with the SRY screen and then with any further investigation that is also going to produce a reliable result.

Sport categories that are protected to allow that protected group to have fair competition have defined boundaries that are outlined in regulation. That is their exact nature of protection.

If a protected category exists at all, it must be for a purpose and definable. Entry to that category is also not based on beliefs that are not measurable.

The female sports categories are protected to allow female people to have fair competition and for physical safety.

Other protected categories in sport are: age group, country specific, sports for athletes with specified disabilities, skill levels. amateur vs professional.

’sport is for all people, it is a human right’

This one is a misrepresentation and is often misused. Sport access is a human right but no person has the right to compete in a protected category that they have been assessed not to belong to.

This argument continually ignores that part.

There is also limitations to human rights claims where that claim will cause harm to others. Male people claiming it is their human right to play sport in a protected category they don’t qualify for, also ignore the limitations that define this ‘rights’ claim.

Those athletes can still play sport! They are not ‘banned’ from sport.

Juat like every other person though, they have to play sport in the category they belong in.

If they have to accept they cannot play in the category they wanted to, so too do many other people who also have to deal with the same news that a protected category is not available for them to compete in.

’but whatabout all these other competitors, they have natural advantages too?’

This is the Phelps fallacy. It is a fallacy because it ignores that natural body variation within a sports category is allowable and that even Phelps was beaten. Just because someone has an extraordinary naturally derived feature doesn’t mean that another person within that category doesn’t have a feature or combination of feature that will also produce a performance to compete.

The key for sex categories is that no female person will have access to the advantages derived from having a male body producing and utilising typical levels of testosterone even from early childhood.

I posted quite a few expert explanations about why this is a fallacy upthread that explains this far better than I can.

‘it is only a few, why is this considered an issue at all!’

It only takes a ‘few’ to cause significant harm to others.

It only takes ‘one’ to set a record that no female athlete will be able to break.

It only takes one to displace thousands of female athletes to get to an elite competition. Semenya displaces thousands of female athletes in his own country to get to international representation level.

It only took 3 to take all podium places in one race at the 2016 Olympics.

It only takes one to cause injuries to other players that a female person would not be likely to have the physical advantages to cause. One male player in a Sydney football league causes numerous reported injuries to female players in one season. One was career stopping for that female player, I believe. It was preventable.

’but sometimes they lose to female athletes’

Another fallacy because it fails to consider the protected category boundary.

As Ross Tucker says, if a Tour de France cyclist rides an electric powered cycle and still doesn’t win, did that cyclist have an advantage? Of course they had a fucking advantage.

Having an unfair competitive physical advantage doesn’t mean you are going to win! But ‘winning’ is not the over riding definition for whether a competitive advantage should be allowed or not into a protected characteristic.

Should a mediocre competitor get to compete in a protected category just because they may not win? Should a mediocre adult runner compete in the under 12 race ‘because they don’t win’???

’not all female athletes agree that this group should be excluded’

This is an irrelevant argument because consent is not transferable.

There is no democratic decision either as to whether a person outside the protected sports category should or should not access that sports category.

‘But these athletes can’t compete with male athletes!’

This is a falsity for several reasons. Including that there is no recognised reason that a group of male people cannot perform at an elite level with 5ARD as an example. There has not been found to be a limiting factor physically.

If also is a falsity because for that statement to be meaningful, what it requires is more detail.

But these athletes can’t compete with male athletes = But these athletes can’t compete with male athletes and win.

Of course those male athletes can compete in male sporting events. Mediocre male athletes enjoy sport all the time.

It is the unsaid bit, the ‘and win’, that makes all the difference.

This argument revolves around providing a male athlete with the opportunity to ‘win’.

For all of the above, if none of those flawed and false arguments work, the activist script then resorts to ad hominem attacks, name calling, insults etc.

The script hasn’t changed much over the years I have watched it.
