Don't Call Me Queer - The LGB and TQ+ Must Split Campaign

IwantToRetire · 22/07/2026 17:57

We have long argued that lesbians, gay men and bisexual people have little in common with those who identify as TQ+.

We believe that the forced teaming of same-sex attracted and TQ+ people, through the use of the aggregate term LGBTQ+ suggests, wrongly, that these distinct groups have common objectives. We don’t, and this umbrella term serves both groups badly.

The Government has abandoned its use of the aggregate term BAME (Black and Minority Ethnic) and we call on them to do the same with LGBTQ+.

Same-sex attracted people must have specific representation.

Oh God. I'm attracted to practical non-stick cookware but also lust after well-seasoned iron skillets. What am I, then - pan pan?

😁😁😁

In that post I specified "male and female" as those two genders. You're allowed to use 'sex' and 'gender' interchangeably within the bounds of the English language. I was not saying "attracted to men and transwomen", don't worry.

But in that case you're being deliberately obtuse. Why bring in 'pansexual' if in your world it's just another word for bisexual? And in any case, bisexual people might not want to be relabelled as pan.Bit presumptuous of you.

We all understand that gender can be a synonym for sex, however its pretty confusing in a conversation specifically about those two things to muddle then up. This is part of the problem - nobody is clear on what gender means any more.

Deciding to use words in technically correct but clearly confusing ways just so you can say 'technically I'm right' whilst confusing your readers seems a bit pointless, but you do you.

Gender & sex are two completely different concepts.

Yes, that’s right, and exactly why the LGB and the TQ+ are better off going their own ways- they’re about two completely separate concepts.

Just to reiterate: they only surveyed their own members.

And even then, they screened out those who might not be rabidly transphobic.

They didn't ask anyone else.

So extrapolating anything from that (and ignoring that the vast majority of gay people know transphobia is just recycled homophobia) is nothing but wishful thinking.

Tragic af honestly 😁

The survey was targeted at presumed supporters of the LGB Alliance; the screening question was merely "Before we start the survey, can you confirm you are a supporter of LGB Alliance?". And the report clearly cautions against wide extrapolation: "It is important to note that these findings represent the views of LGB Alliance LGB supporters, they are not generalisable to the LGB population in the UK as a whole."

That a large majority of the gay, lesbian, and bisexual supporters were uncomfortable at being lumped together with TQ+ is unsurprising; more interesting are the comparisons between subgroups, and of course the free text reponses. Still, wouldn't be a bad idea in general for charities, trade unions, and the like to actually canvass opinion among their membership before proclaiming their stance on certain issues, would it?

I'm not sure that's accurate... Bisexual means attraction to two genders (male and female) whereas pansexual is attraction to all genders (male, female, trans, nonbinary, etc). I don't think you'd bother to say "oh, I'm a pansexual man currently in a relationship with a man... I must be both pansexual and gay" because pansexual already covers homosexual. That's my understanding, anyway. Maybe you're pansexual and can explain it better...

You are confusing two belief systems.

If you believe trans people exist (and they clearly do!) then sex and gender are different. So it's perfectly possible to only be attracted to only one of the two biological sexes, but not be fixed within that to only people of the same gender.

It is confusing because the two systems use the same words ("man", "woman", sometimes even "male" and "female") to mean different things. But once you get your head round it and remember to keep track of which meaning is relevant at the time it's completely clear.

Really, Genderist belief should have picked different words instead of this weird "what we mean by wonan is totally different to what the word always used to mean, but we will still use the sane word for it" pose.

But then again, if they had done that they'd have had to explain from first principles why this gender thing that is very definitely not sex nevertheless has to allow access to resources that are segregated by sex.

And that is something they very very very much do not want to have to do.

Much easier to get what they want by messing around with language so they can say "Well it says woman on the door and I'm a woman, so what's your problem?"

Secretseverywhere · 23/07/2026 15:30

Surely it’s enough that a proportion of those surveyed would like to be in a group for exclusively same sex attracted people.

I don’t see why there should be forced teaming between gender ideaology and homosexuality. The only reason it currently exists is because gay rights organisations pivoted to keep the £££ rolling in. It’s perfectly reasonable to be same sex attracted and GC but that viewpoint has seen people ostracised so they started their own organisation.

Under that, I'm part of it, asexual but I'd never call myself that, I just say I'm happily single, or single by choice, and am I queer, No the fuck I'm not, nor do I need trains painted for me, no one has ever asked if I'm in a relationship and having a shag in it because why would they?
It's attention seeking nonsense.

Absolutely, and good for you, it's your business and no-one else needs to know. So much that should remain private doesn't nowadays. I don't want to know about the details of people's sexual preferences, activities or perversions thank you very much.

I make similar jokes about pans every time I hear the word pansexual 😂

Yes it is childish.

Stil funny though

It's worth mentioning the Dentons Document in this context, in case anybody isn't aware of it:

In 2019, a company called Dentons produced a report 'Good Practices in Legal Gender Recognition for Youth' which looked at the laws in various countries, and suggested a set of strategies to achieve 'best practice' to enable young people to 'transition' legally.

One of the strategies was adding trans rights onto existing campaigns and groups in the areas of diversity, equality, non-discrimination etc., i.e. 'piggybacking'.

Lesbian and gay rights was an obvious target, So the T appeared in 'LGBT', it wasn't part of a process, it wasn't discussed in advance, we didn't get to vote on it - the T appeared, followed by Q, sometimes I and A, and also +++.

Groups like Stonewall pivoted to focus almost entirely on trans issues - a good example of 'entryism'.

There was nothing inevitable or organic about the addition of the T to LGB, it can be seen as part of a deliberate strategy.

Some other strategies suggested by Dentons in 2019 look familiar, don't they? though the last one, litigation, hasn't gone very well for them in the UK..

  • Incremental change: Introduce reforms step by step rather than all at once, to avoid backlash.
  • Piggybacking on other causes: Attach trans rights to broader equality, diversity, or anti-discrimination initiatives to normalise them.
  • Strategic framing: Use language that resonates positively (e.g., “equality,” “human rights”) and avoid terms that may provoke opposition.
  • Youth mobilisation: Position young people as the face of reform efforts, emphasising innocence and urgency to gain public sympathy.
  • Litigation and legal tools: Where possible, bring test cases to courts to compel governments to adapt laws.

Stonewall in 2015 had already pivoted from LGB to LGBT long before the Dentons Document was published.

Being LGB is about which biological sex you’re attracted to, regardless of whether someone identifies as a gender.

Being T is about what gender you identify as, which is very likely different from your sex.

Two completely different concepts.

If you want to be an ally to LGB people, don’t derail the thread with a load of talk about cisgender & pansexuality.

Thank you. Clarity matters and I believe the LGB Alliance’s campaign is important.

I had a conversation with my friend who genuinely thought being gay was part of gender identity.

Yes and as they talk about it, and existing members resigned because of the decision it is really important to remember that the main pressure to link the T to LGB was to provide a funding stream for Stonewall.

I doubt even the most cynical of them never imagined how far reaching this would be.

Totally agree.

And hard to believe this thread is about a campaign, and the depressing fact that it is still needed 2 years after it was first started.

And that yet again someone doesn't seem to understand that a campaign would be based on the agreed aims of the organisation. (Useful approach to ensure their campaign doesn't get derailed!)

Seems we need not only a MN Agony Aunt forum for those who are confused about what sex is (rather than assuming a deliberate derail) but also a basic politics forum, eg how to run a campaign, keeping members engaged.

It seems no thread on FWR is now free from whataboutery.

If we cant even have straight forward discussion on a forum with a shared belief in women's sex based rights, where can you have one?

And its always someone piggybacking. Never ever starting a thread and putting forward an OP to then get others to respond to.

You're confused. BiSEXual is attraction to both SEXes (the clue is right there in the name).
Trans, non binary etc are identities not sexes. All humans fall into one of the two sex categories . Pansexual is therefore nonsense and meaningless

I think you can assume from someone who uses the word gender rather than sex has an agenda or outlook that is going to be at odds with many on FWR.

So can only wonder why they are asking questions based on a belief set that is not the focus of this forum, or if any of us are obliged to answer.

Especially if the same person calls themselves cis.

Self-described ‘Cis’ people can be allies to the LGBTQIA++ but they’re no friends to the LGB.
