Did anyone catch up with the cancellation of WRN NIs event at Féile and Phobail festivak today?

Apparently it’s ‘anti trans’ except the event was about women’s voices being heard.

JKR offered to fund….

Your link doesn't appear to show that. Seems a nasty bastard was harassing a woman and it was reported roughly correctly other than a few minor details.

RoyalCorgi · 28/07/2026 19:06

A PP said that AM must have known deep down in her heart that she was wrong. I wonder. I think it's quite possible that she believes it. She was so angry, so furious that someone dared to disagree with her.

You would like to think that someone with a reasonable level of education would understand that in a debate, you play the ball, not the man - ie you don't make ad hominem attacks based on "you think X, this other really nasty person also thinks X, therefore X must be wrong". It is so feeble. It's up there with "Hitler was a vegetarian, therefore vegetarianism is bad."

She also seemed to be saying both that she knew exactly what WRN's views are, and that she hadn't had time to research WRN's views.

Helen was clearly vastly more intelligent than she was, as well as more reasonable and more articulate. I wonder what AM was expecting, exactly? Did she think she would face a caricature of a bigoted right-winger? Was she surprised to be up against someone as thoughtful and reasoned as Helen Joyce?

UtopiaPlanitia · 28/07/2026 15:38

Listening to it now and Morris is just refusing to accept that she's wrong and didn't do her research. She's trying to do a smear job with her guilt by association accusations.

Dare we hope for a John Boyne style mea culpa?

DworkinWasRight · 28/07/2026 18:24

Allison came across as being both remarkably stupid and exceptionally unpleasant, which is rarely a winning combination.

I’m amazed at how calm and eloquent Helen always is. I’d have wanted just to shout at the ghastly woman.

AM's defence that couldn't have been any falsehoods in the article because nothing had been retracted therefore there couldn't have been any falsehoods was particularly thin.
She must have trans relative to be this angry & mendacious.

We will have to keep an eye out to see of anything is retracted once HJ makes her complaint.

When Allison was told it was false that JKR was funding the case her response was not yet.

TheywontletmehavethenameIwant · 28/07/2026 16:59

Not to defend AM, she's an idiot, but maybe the reason why she was so hostile was because she felt she had been sandbagged. She agreed to go on thinking she would be debating with a rep of WRN NI, instead she ended up going head to head with HELEN JOYCE 😱. AM is clearly not in HJ's league, perhaps she thought she was just going to 'educate' a country bumpkin WRN activist and instead she was the one who got 'schooled'. 😂

That was one of the most extreme examples of left-wing identity politics, and more straw-manning from a real journalist than I've ever heard before. Really quite extraordinary and incoherent points from Morris.

She really had nothing other than screaming far right, trump, musk, sectarianism. Scarlet for her.

TheCandidPoet · 28/07/2026 15:56

I'd say Allison just fell off her pink cloud with a thump!

I left Belfast years ago but her whiny ranting catapulted me back to the wee tween bitches who shouted 'My mammy says you lot breed like flies!' at me.

Helen Joyce is a fking queen. How does she keep her cool?

She is amazing. Most of us would lose it.

spannasaurus · 28/07/2026 16:14

It seemed to me that Allison had read what other people had said about WRN and Sex Matters rather than reading what they actually say themselves

Towards the end of that interview, Allison talks about predatory men being devious and the lengths they will go to to get access to vulnerable woman such as becoming priests and coaches but she doesn't think that these same men might identify as women to get access

She seems to have this belief that all men who claim to be women are as non-violent as women and would never commit a crime. I mean we had a recent criminal case where a trans-identifed man attacked a neighbour.

James also successfully sued to be placed in with women prisoners:

Transgender woman avoids jail over homophobic attack on neighbour

The judge warned the defendant that if there was any breach or further offence, she could face going to prison.

Wow. Well Allison certainly showed who is the vile toxic side in this debate. Shame on her.

I thought William Crawley did a good job of ensuring they both spoke. Morris really didn't want to let Helen Joyce get a word in - she kept blustering and spluttering so much in indignance every time Joyce made a point.

I'm also glad that Crawley clarified that Joyce was supportive of the judgement about removing boys from girls sport made by the US Supreme Court, and not via any legislation enacted by the Trump administration. Morris was deliberately being unclear on that issue as an attempt to smear guilt by association and wouldn't even admit it when the truth was pointed out by both Joyce and the presenter.

I think Morris made a show of herself to be honest. I don't think she came across well as a journalist because she stated so many factual inaccuracies and refused to accept when she had been wrong. I hope Helen Joyce does actually write to the Belfast Telegraph regarding the falsehoods in the article.

Yes, I agree. He seemed quite across the issues and I think the fact that he challenged some of AM's assertions contributed to her getting so angry. I think she was expecting an easier ride. I am so glad they invited HJ on 😄

I would imagine HJ will definitely follow up on her plans to write to the BT. Do you think they will publish her letter?

Crazy. Yet we see it again and again the magic men in dresses effect.

It is way easier to put on a dress than become a Priest. Somehow no male predator would think of doing it though. Even if we put aside the fetish side.

Listen here. It was with Helen Joyce. She came off well as usual.

“We have literally just been cancelled.”

That was sooooo uncomfortable!

It is so difficult, painful even, hearing someone's blind spot and how close and yet so far the crossing over the chasm us.

I felt like I was listening from high above and could see it all - what Helen was trying to say and I could see so clearly, but how Alison was hearing it all through an existing filter and there was just no way through.

It's like the blind man and the elephant analogy, I think?

The links with/aligning far right aspects reminded me so much of the incredibly frustrating thread discussions with Cassie Maddocks/Adam something(?) poster during general election time.

For me, the psychological effect of even witnessing these interactions, let alone engaging in them, does have that silent scream in a dream quality.

The reason I avoid going there with friends who I know see things and perceive similarly to Alison here, is that I don't feel equipped to reach effectively across that chasm. Other than initially just to name it's existence maybe.

To be fair, that is also the most pissed off I have ever heard Helen Joyce get.

I agree with that, did any one else think Helen's accent got more Irish the more AM vexed her. 😂

Edited

Haha, I am Irish but have lived in England a long time, and my children can confirm that I also sound more Irish when I am annoyed 🤣

I just listened too, thanks for the heads-up @Savvysix1984.

Allison Morris sounded hugely rattled, and I suspect it is because she knows, deep down, she is wrong about this. All she had was smears and trying to show guilt by association (ridiculous argument).

She also seemed under prepared to debate Helen Joyce as she said she had spent a couple of minutes beforehand looking at Helen's social media and then wrongly asserted that Helen had posted in support of the Trump Administration when HJ had actually posted about the Supreme Court Ruling on Title IX. Not great from an investigative journalist. And then she got more angry as it went on and started throwing (well, spitting) out words like toxic. To be fair, that is also the most pissed off I have ever heard Helen Joyce get. I don't think these two will be meeting for a brew anytime soon 🤣
