It is not really about being exposed to male genitalia; it is more about the privacy of one's sex and how that is compromised by the 'otherness' of a male person in a female only public space, and how that can make women and girls feel uncomfortable.... at the very least.

Why is ‘they’ a question?

From my perspective, if a situation needs to be single sex then that’s what it should be, but most of life doesn’t need to be single sex so for all of those situations it’s fine for us to all be together. Where single sex spaces are appropriate/required for dignity, arrangements should be made to accommodate those who are trans or other complicated situations (eg third spaces)

'Women only' or 'Female only' does the job just fine. It is dehumanising to just use the name of sexual body parts to describe who a facility or category was designed for.
