It is medical diagnosis that was used to deprive people of the right to access, care, education and employment. It was a concept used to justify the 'eugenic' compulsory sterilisation or even murder of 'unfit' people.

The new eugenics will use it to coerce people into 'assisted dying'. It is dehumanising and deeply deeply offensive. It is extremely naive to think its recent re-emergence of the term as a casual insult on social media happened outside that context.

Because it apparently only offends ‘some’ people. Make it make sense!

Yes. There are other terms with similar issues, like 'spastic', used in the US as a mild insult without the apparent revulsion that it provokes in the UK.

Yes, Marie, unfortunately still in use by many Americans, but fortunately most Americans seem to realize it's a derogatory term, and has been for a long time (in our area, we all used it as kids, back in the 60s, until our parents found out!) Some people clearly never got the memo. Or don't care. Perhaps it has been picked up again through social media, and will have to be stamped out again. It is really jarring to see it!

But, then, "handicapped" is still an "acceptable," and even official, term in the US (at least it still was in 2024, last time I was home).
