I remember falling for the adverts for them but actually not being impressed when we persuaded my mum to try them even back then.

Also, meat paste sandwiches - a lot of people had these in their lunch boxes. It looked and smelt horrible, thankfully my mum never bought it.

Dp got a Fray Bentos in a couple of years ago. Apparently they were easier to get out of the tin back in the day. It took him much swearing , several kitchen implements and about 10 minutes. After which apparently it also wasn't as nice as he remembered.

I got a couple in over Covid, never ate them and now use them inside a sturdy plastic bag to weigh down the clothes airer on my balcony, which has a tendency to blow over in a NE breeze.

This is taking me back! We had Frey Bentos pies on holiday occasionally and I remembered them fondly so about ten years ago tried one again. Never again.

My memory of Angel delight was trying to
mix it up in a pan on a campsite for Duke of Edinburgh with powered milk. We also used the powdered milk to mix up smash. Fortunately I have no memory of actually eating either of those.

Oh god I hope they don't have pets but I fear they do.

I'm amazed you can still get Angel Delight - it was a treat when I was a child. Does anyone remember Vesta meals? They were dehydrated chinese style food. My DF was a fan and when my DM went back to work he used to produce them when we came in from school.

Apart from anything else you take the milk out of the fridge to make Angel Delight and pretty much mix it where you stand, because it has to go back in the fridge to set.

We have an outdoor BBQ with lots of tanks of gas, though the kids tell me that wouldn’t help if we had a zombie apocalypse and had to barricade ourselves inside. Haven’t checked if one of those is imminent, though I do wonder the rise of the gender ideologues may be the first wave…

Tinned curries and chilli con carne tend to be more edible, but of course there's no pastry. Plus, if a cyber attack knocks out electricity the tinned stuff would be easier to eat than a pie.

Was thinking, given we’ve been passively encouraged to build a stockpile of long life foods in case of a Russian cyber attack, to maybe get a couple of Fray Bentos tins in. If it’s those of the frozen dog food, I might get over the saltiness!

I have fond memories of white bread as we had all those strikes in the late seventies and that included bread strikes. One of the few fond memories I have of my mum was that she ended up making bread from scratch as queueing for hours with a baby and bored 7 year old (me) was purgatory. I have never tasted white bread as good since. Not ever. It was divine. With or without the sandwich spread!

A nostalgic thing for me was trying a Vesta paella which we had a lot as kids and enjoyed. I went into a shop I'd never been in before and would never return to and the woman on the till took the box and my money and then slapped the box down on the counter in disgust, giving me a disdainful stare as she did so. I prepared the paella and, sadly, it was disgusting.

We did. There are often threads on here claiming that in the 70s everybody ate healthy plain food cooked from scratch. Utter nonsense. Some people may have done, we didn't. My Mum cooked when she had time and took shortcuts when she didn't. God alone knows what was in some of the things we ate.

When I was training as an accountant decades ago, we were sent on courses to prepare us for our professional exams. They were held in a hall attached to a synagogue in West London and the caretaker's wife made sandwiches we could buy at our breaks, to go with the polystyrene cups of instant coffee, nasty soft drinks in unnatural colours, crisps and chocolate biscuits they no doubt bought from a cash and carry. The sandwiches were made with white sliced bread and a limited range of very cheap fillings, one of which was sliced hard-boiled egg and sandwich spread. That was my favourite and I still have it sometimes now.

It's a bloke whisking Angel Delight?

I fear it too, but I'm a very curious person - a trait I've never regretted until now. I believe I've worked out that it's something to do with bumholes.

My mum used to double the amount of milk when making up Angel Delight, then pour into tall glasses for a version of thick milkshake.

OMG am going to have to source some now just to see if it tastes like remember it. Oh, and a frey bentos steak and kidney pie with puff pastry in a tin. That was a serious treat, served with Smash, of course.

We did eat some serious crap in the 70’s/80s (esp if you were erm ‘poor’).
