A growing threat: the anti-rights movement in the UK says Amnesty who claim over 50% are Gender Critical groups

Quote:

Anti-rights actors seek a society in which women and men have fixed and distinct roles, based on what they view as ‘natural’ and ‘traditional’. These actors perceive the idea that gender is socially constructed as a threat because it suggests that gender roles can, and do, change across societies and over time. In fact, progress in the rights of women and LGBT+ people has been underpinned by changing understandings of gender and social roles.

Anti-rights actors refer to this perceived threat as ‘gender ideology’, portraying it as an attack on national traditions, family structures, marriage and religious freedom. These narratives often seek to generate fear and uncertainty and rely on misinformation or exaggerated claims.

The term ‘gender ideology’ emerged in the context of debates within international institutions, particularly the United Nations, about gender equality and sexual and reproductive rights.

In 1964, the Holy See became a Permanent Observer at the UN General Assembly, the only religious body with this status. As a permanent observer the Holy See can participate in processes at the General Assembly as well as other UN bodies. It cannot vote but it has the possibility to co-sponsor resolutions if a member state requests a vote. Although it cannot vote, the Holy See can participate in UN discussions and processes and has played an influential role in debates on women's rights and LGBT+ rights.

The term ‘gender ideology’ gained prominence in response to progress on gender equality and Cairo in 1994. These conference were a landmark moment for the global women's rights movement. The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action is widely regarded as a key international framework for advancing women's rights and gender equality, and states continue to report on its implementation through the Commission on the Status of Women.

While opposition to sexual and reproductive rights predates the Beijing conference, the term ‘gender ideology’ became a particularly important response to the advances achieved there. The phrase was coined to explain the growing influence of gender equality agendas and to mobilise opposition to them.

Although the term originated in debates at the international level, it has since become a broad political narrative used by a wide range of anti-rights actors. Today, it is often used to connect campaigns against gender equality, sexual and reproductive rights, and LGBT+ rights across different countries and contexts.

Nail on head!
This has to be one of the best, and definitely the most succinct, summing up of the situation ever, Shedmistress👏

A decade of observations in a single sentence.

Voila.

Women are a much softer target than Islamists and angry men.

Maybe Amnesty thought so... but this time they picked on the wrong women.

Indeed, it is noticeable that gender crit women have been way more assertive than the Christians who while they have complained have not called in lawyers.

Thank goodness for women standing up for everyone.

ANGRY women are not to be trifled with, however.

I'm livid, and I know it's not just me.

Edited for typo.

Especially angry post-menopausal women. We are a force to be reckoned with.

Although it's notable that we fight back with lawyers; not piss protests or offensive weapons¹.

So a considerably safer target in some short term ways.

¹ A few of those who've been on the receiving end in court may quibble about whether lawyers & offensive weapons are 1 category or 2.

IwantToRetire · 28/07/2026 17:48

Its clear from their overview which you can still see online, is that they were looking for information that supports their existing belief / politics.

Our groundbreaking analysis has uncovered a rapidly expanding network of organisations working to undermine human rights protections, targeting reproductive freedoms, LGBTI rights and promoting dangerous practices such as so-called "conversion therapy".

https://www.amnesty.org.uk/knowledge-hub/all-resources/the-anti-rights-movement/

ie the analysis that it is money from right wing US christian groups who are funding hate groups. This has been going of for some time. It was only a few years ago that the publication about "hate" groups included women's groups.

I doubt it even enters their head that women can and do organise themselves for what they believe in and continue to do so with or without funding!

The anti-rights movement

A powerful anti-rights movement is growing in the UK, threatening to roll back our hard-won freedoms and rewrite the rules on whose rights, bodies and lives deserve protection. But - we refuse to be divided. @amnestyUK

Did this get commented on at the time? May 2026?

Like a snowball: the growth and impact of the gender critical movement in the UK
https://media.amnesty.org.uk/documents/Likeasnowballfinal.pdf

This absolute obsession by the so called left or whatever it is with women are so exceeding their position in society by standing up for their rights.

Its a real eye opener that for AI their priority is telling women to STFU because men are upset by not being allowed to do what the want, when they want to, and everyone applauding them.

At least in the 70s and 80s you could name sexism and people would understand (even if they didn't care) but in 2026 talking, let alone organising for women's rights, is being made to seem the most "hateful" thing in the world.

Edited to add they note that the growth of these women's hate groups coincides with the consultation on the attempt to change the GRA. And as FWR was and became a very active part of that should be complain that we weren't included on the list of hate groups?!

I think the greater interest in this one is because they actually named all those organisations and made blatantly defamatory accusations to specific groups.

Agree - just astonishing they felt so secure in their self affirming bubble.

I just meant that given the earlier report it isn't really a surprise that they felt confident enough to go on to be even more blatantly anti woman.

Amnesty also intervened in the appeal of FWS v Scottish ministers, on the side of the Scottish ministers, in the 2nd half of 2024, so they've shown their hand 3 times in 2 years.

I think people more rolled their eyes about that one, and as it didn’t name organisations maybe weren’t so aware of it.

By chance have just seen that Oxfam(??) seem to have been publishing much the same anti feminist rubbish.

See links here (and groan) https://www.oxfam.org.uk/oxfam-in-action/oxfam-blog/solidarity-pride-human-rights-anti-rights-movements/

I suppose it is no surprise as the Queer TRAs have been infiltrating just about every where. Police, politicians, health so global development charity groups would be a suitable host for entryism.

Oxfam have form for misogyny - there was that scandal over their staff buying women for sex.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 28/07/2026 21:22

Yes. That was excused, I seem to remember, as being them putting money into the economy! I can't remember whether that was in South Sudan or Somalia, because my daughter was posted to both at different times, but I remember her having been fed that line by someone working for the UN at the time. I think it was Somalia.... Whichever it was, it was disgusting to offer "aid for sex", which seemed to be the final analysis and made the money into the economy argument look pretty silly when it came out.

DrBlackbird · 28/07/2026 21:22

PrettyDamnCosmic · 28/07/2026 12:40

You're sure about that?

She looks & sounds like a woman in the video I posted earlier. I doubt that any laryngeal surgery or vocal coaching could give a man a female voice like that.

BTW The video is worth a watch to hear her paranoid ramblings about far right funding of anti-rights organisations.

Edited

Pardon my French, but they all sound like fuck wits. It’s depressing.

Oxfam have form for misogyny - there was that scandal over their staff buying women for sex.

They were shagging "child prostitutes" in Haiti, I seem to remember. Or "raping trafficked children for money" as it more accurately known.

Then allegations from Chad and Liberia came out, and more subsequently.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 29/07/2026 08:15

Yes, Amnesty were emboldened until they went so far it really couldn't be ignored. Part of me thinks, what did Amnesty expect? But I agree with you @IwantToRetire , it's like any other kind of abuse. They didn't expect a backlash this time because they got away with it in May. And the more an abuser gets away with the more invulnerable they feel.

And in a way it's good that Amnesty did get this far because now they can't claim it was just a one-off or a slip. Amnesty created a blatant evidence trail and put it out there themselves. Either their processes are not fit for purpose or it was bad policy. Maybe both.

FAFO. Or as I prefer, FAFOFI. Fuck About, Find Out, Fix It.

Oxfam have had a few scandals about how they treat women like shit and don't understand the concepts of rights and exploitation.

'In fairness to Oxfam' [yes I'm using that phrase again, I can't help myself...]
it was individuals 'in the field' who abused women and girls, it was not sanctioned by the organisation. The abuse was, if I remember rightly, uncovered and reported by other Oxfam workers, and 'Oxfam HQ' condemned it and suspended the abusers.

I'm sure they were too slow to act, tried to protect their reputation by covering it up etc etc., and deserve all the criticism in the world for that, but I don't think it's right to suggest that Oxfam as an organisation was practising or condoning 'sex for aid'.

That’s fair. And I expect a lot of the women who work in their charity shops know exactly what a woman is.

I used to donate all my books to Oxfam (we have an Oxfam bookshop in town) but I stopped following their decision to stop selling a box of cards featuring inspirational women on the grounds it wasn't inclusive. It was one of the first public spats that peaked me on women's rights.
