A growing threat: the anti-rights movement in the UK says Amnesty who claim over 50% are Gender Critical groups

Quote:

Anti-rights actors seek a society in which women and men have fixed and distinct roles, based on what they view as ‘natural’ and ‘traditional’. These actors perceive the idea that gender is socially constructed as a threat because it suggests that gender roles can, and do, change across societies and over time. In fact, progress in the rights of women and LGBT+ people has been underpinned by changing understandings of gender and social roles.

Anti-rights actors refer to this perceived threat as ‘gender ideology’, portraying it as an attack on national traditions, family structures, marriage and religious freedom. These narratives often seek to generate fear and uncertainty and rely on misinformation or exaggerated claims.

The term ‘gender ideology’ emerged in the context of debates within international institutions, particularly the United Nations, about gender equality and sexual and reproductive rights.

In 1964, the Holy See became a Permanent Observer at the UN General Assembly, the only religious body with this status. As a permanent observer the Holy See can participate in processes at the General Assembly as well as other UN bodies. It cannot vote but it has the possibility to co-sponsor resolutions if a member state requests a vote. Although it cannot vote, the Holy See can participate in UN discussions and processes and has played an influential role in debates on women's rights and LGBT+ rights.

The term ‘gender ideology’ gained prominence in response to progress on gender equality and Cairo in 1994. These conference were a landmark moment for the global women's rights movement. The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action is widely regarded as a key international framework for advancing women's rights and gender equality, and states continue to report on its implementation through the Commission on the Status of Women.

While opposition to sexual and reproductive rights predates the Beijing conference, the term ‘gender ideology’ became a particularly important response to the advances achieved there. The phrase was coined to explain the growing influence of gender equality agendas and to mobilise opposition to them.

Although the term originated in debates at the international level, it has since become a broad political narrative used by a wide range of anti-rights actors. Today, it is often used to connect campaigns against gender equality, sexual and reproductive rights, and LGBT+ rights across different countries and contexts.

So,
Anything tiny bit pro women = bad
Rape centre = bad… because…JKR
Catholics Church against abortion = bad
Muslims against abortion = silence… because…Gaza?

And this was written bloody hell by a woman in her 40s.
Another dim virtue signaller patting herself on her/they back for being RSOH?

Apparently the thing that makes a difference in women's views on these issues isn't age so much as motherhood.

Have been away and not followed all of this thread. Has this been posted:
You've Got Mail - by Graham Linehan - The Glinner Update

Also thanks for the link to the EDM

Still only 5 signatories.

What does that tell you about the standards of MPs that they aren't prepared to say it is unacceptable to publish lies.

I suspect this is also about the gross corruption of UK politics, with internal groups bartering with each other. ie just who can score more points internally.

What does it say about our soon to be new PM that he doesn't care that a major UK charity has made a complete fool of itself.

And of course created a situation where nobody need believe anything they publish.

You've Got Mail

Amnesty are having a nightmare of a week and it's only Wednesday.

I asked my wife, she said that an abortion can be carried out in Iran, but only if the mother's life was at risk. It must not be carried out for personal/social reasons and if it is done, then it must be carried out before 19 weeks.

I get the impression that with the Snowball report and Chiara running her mouth off to all and sundry there were probably grounds for defamation even prior to this debacle.

There's an Alex Massie article listed under The Times piece above. Does anyone have a share token for it please?

@fromorbit thank you for your post about Tonia Antoniazzi's EDM.

So far the grand total of....

5

MP's have had the guts to sign it.

I have written to my (thus far) useless MP.

I read or at least skimmed most of the report today. At no point do they define 'gender critical', though they wang on at length about 'gender ideology':
‘These actors [nasty evil anti-rights unpersons] perceive the idea that gender is socially constructed as a threat because it suggests that gender roles can, and do, change across societies and over time [...] Anti-rights actors refer to this perceived threat as ‘gender ideology’,’ Dunno about you, but that's not how I define GI, nor how I feel about the mutability of gender roles.

The report includes this gem:
'In fact, gender critical organisations only account for 2.5% of total expenditure but have been remarkably successful in realising their agenda through strategic litigation and campaigning.'
Aw, diddums. Did the Supreme Court ruling sting? That you, with all your moolah, lost - and the skint but evil terven won.

Janice Turner mentions this in her diary column in the Times:
"It’s a bleak irony that Amnesty International, founded in 1961 to support those punished by dictatorships for holding the “wrong” opinions, is now black-listing people for believing sex is real.
Among the groups and charities accused of spreading hatred in Amnesty’s recent report, A Growing Threat: The Anti-Rights Movement in the UK, was Beira’s Place, an Edinburgh rape crisis centre. To designate a refuge for female victims of male violence “anti rights” suggests you don’t believe women deserve any rights at all. It is also somewhat stupid to defame a service founded and wholly funded by JK Rowling, a billionaire.
Clearly no competent lawyer read the report before publication, which is why it was hastily taken down. Amnesty’s reputation, like Stonewall’s, has free-falled. In the Supreme Court last year after the For Women Scotland judgment, I saw a gaggle of bemused-looking people. It was the Amnesty team whose shoddy, legally illiterate intervention, which argued no single-sex space has a right to exist, had spectacularly failed.
This report is the work of blinkered activists who care nothing for genuine human rights abuse in Russia, Afghanistan or China; illiberal commissars who share the instincts of the Stasi, not its victims. To think of all those brilliant, moving Secret Policeman’s Ball concerts. (I bought the LPs.) Today Amnesty is like looking into the eyes of a beloved old friend and realising they’ve lost their mind."

One massive difference is that in Islam, the husband is the one who gets to decide if the woman has an abortion or not.

I don't know for sure how far that right goes when her health/life are at stake, but I would guess that even then, he gets to make that final decision and not her.

StSpiridian · 15/07/2026 15:38

the letter from JKR also requires an apology/acknowledgement they lied for all the other groups they maligned as well (see remedies page 2)

moto748e · 15/07/2026 12:46

Do they seriously imagine that they will be able to demonstrate that SM have dodgy funding? It's like they totally believe what they want to be true.

Chiara Capraro has said on one of the podcasts that they are eagerly awaiting Sex Matters’ first accounts.

Sex Matters published their first accounts about three months ago so Amnesty had plenty of time for their forensic accountants to find where all the funding came from.

Ah ok I think both podcasts were a while ago.

I don’t know what Islam says about reproductive rights. Does anyone else?

I wondered the same and did some very cursory research. I think all the major religions are theoretically broadly against abortion, but obviously people have many different reasons for faith and religious people aren’t all anti abortion. Members of the Parliamentary Christian group hold a range of views.

If the report only listed Christian groups that specifically campaign against abortion it would at-least suggest some research, although not much understanding of freedom of belief.

As it is it reads like the rantings of a conspiracy theorist, although that is perhaps insulting to conspiracy theorists..

It's not clear on what grounds any of the orgs were added to the list, while others are asking why they weren't included!! I thought there were funding allegations for one thing, but not sure if that allegedly applied to all of them.

MP letter sent. He voted Aye to stopping the puberty blockers trial, so I'm hopeful.

INeedAPensieve · 15/07/2026 10:17

This whole thing makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Amnesty have really overstepped - the line is a dot to them!

I do hope some (or all) of the organisations can get legal about this. It just looks like a giant toddler tantrum from Amnesty tbh; we don't agree with you so are going to put out a report saying you are all big meanies with nothing substantial to back up the claims. Idiots.

I did do a sad sigh to learn that the author of the report was a woman in her 40s. I just DO NOT GET woman who betray their sex class like this. I do not get it.

Islamic Position on Abortion
The Quran is silent on the issue of abortion. However, most Muslim scholars conclude that abortion is unlawful except in some circumstances providing it is carried out within certain time limits. There is difference of opinion amongst scholars regarding under which circumstances abortion is allowed. There is also a difference of opinion about the time limits within which abortion is allowed. This varies from 40 days (about 6 weeks) to 120 days (about 4 months) from conception. This difference of opinion is based on when scholars think the soul enters the embryo. Even within each school of Islamic thought there is disagreement on abortion and in which circumstances it is allowed. For example, many may only consider it being allowed if it poses danger to the mother's physical health. However, some moderate scholars may also consider a mother's mental health.

Thanks @nicepotoftea and yes that’s true in that the official doctrine of the church does not represent the views of every single church member. And agree on it being slightly more understandable if the report mentioned the very evangelical organisations that harass women going into clinics. However, as you say, the report doesn’t indicate much research or thought went into it. It started on the faulty premise that all GC = bad and went from there.

nicepotoftea · 15/07/2026 09:08

DrBlackbird · 15/07/2026 08:45

I’m not holding my breath. Was amazed to see that 4 had signed. Many MPs are either cowards or ideologues.

Catholic church only included because of its stance on pregnancy termination of course. I don’t know what Islam says about reproductive rights. Does anyone else? Though several Islamic countries are not particularly supportive of human rights in general for women or LGB or political prisoners…

Edited to add: this report by AI is indicative of where thinking has moved to, reduced to simplistic good-bad dichotomy based on so-called progressive parameters with nuance and complexity ignored. I see this with my student’s writing. Partially it’s lack of life experience and/or lack of knowledge and partially it’s the influence of algorithmic ranking pushing the simplistic but provocative messages into everyone’s feeds.
