'Educate, motivate, and inspire lawmakers' - Stonewall's New 'Proud Employers' scheme and strategy

BridgetPhillipsonIsACowardlyJobsworth · 03/06/2026 09:52

From summer 2025

Another one to watch out for: Stonewall's revamped and relaunched (prior to appointing their new chair) "Proud Employers" scheme.

As part of my trip down the rabbit hole of where the TRAs might go next, Stonewall seem to be doubling down on influencing legislation and business. Part of their strategy is going after the lawmakers in this country. We'll see how long this lasts under their new Chair.

https://www.attitude.co.uk/news/stonewall-unveils-new-approach-and-three-year-strategy-to-educate-motivate-and-inspire-lawmakers-487706/

Approaching its 40th anniversary, as part of the ‘In Courage and Unity, is Hope’ strategy, Stonewall says it will focus on being “pragmatic conveners resisting the rollback of rights for all LGBTQ+ people and advocating for progress with politicians and business leaders”.
^^
It also outlines a continued commitment to legal equality for LGBTQ+ people, stating:
“Together we must educate, motivate, and inspire lawmakers [my bold] to support equality, and continue shaping the legislative and policy landscape to improve the lives of LGBTQ+ people.”.

As part of this transition, the charity has begun the search for a new Chair, following Catherine Dixon’s decision to step down.

Stonewall unveils new approach and three-year strategy to 'educate, motivate, and inspire lawmakers'

"We must continue working to create a society and working environment that supports LGBTQ+ people to thrive," said CEO Simon Blake.

@KnottyAuty @TwoLoonsAndASprout
This is not coming up under the new Proud Employers scheme, however, they are still advertising themselves as a Stonewall Diversity Champion. Don't know, this might be an oversight, but the job ad was published on 22 July 2026:

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust

https://www.jobs.nhs.uk/candidate/jobadvert/C9271-26-0268

We have policies and procedures in place to ensure that all applicants and employees are treated fairly and consistently. We are proud to be accredited as a Disability Confident Employer, a member of Business Disability Forum and a Stonewall Diversity Champion. We have active and Executive supported BAME, LGBT+ and Allies, Disability and Long-Term Health Conditions and Women's staff networks. [my bold]

Im not sure we have updated info on this one unfortunately but it looks like it’s old blurb if that scheme has ended? Like the schemes supposedly supporting women/gender equality i think the trans stuff more and more looks like “trans-washing” for appearances sake. The organisations don’t celebrate trans day of visibility because it’s an authentic and impromptu celebration … but because they get points for doing it… takes the shine off when you see it through that lens

Stonewall's Proud Employers scheme

Only one found today:

We’re proud to share that we’ve been accredited as a @stonewalluk Proud Employer Champion.

This recognition reflects the progress we’re making to create a more inclusive, supportive workplace for LGBTQ+ colleagues — and it’s a great moment to celebrate the work happening across our teams. We can't wait to join other Proud Employers at the Proud Employers Summit in April. A brilliant opportunity to learn, share and keep building on what we’ve achieved together. 🌈 #ExperianUK #ProudEmployer #uniquleyexperian

Update: no "Proud Employer" orgs to add to the list this week. Strange.

Does this mean we've found them all already? (doubtful)

Does this mean that those that have achieved "Proud Employer" status are keeping it under wraps? (unlikely)

I am suspicious of West London NHS Trust, due to something I saw on another thread. But, there's nothing conclusive yet.

I shall check again next week.

@KnottyAuty I think I'm just nostalgic. This was once a great organisation and I've been very sad to see it's demise

What business does, within the law, is entirely their business. However, any public body needs to be reminded to follow the law and remain impartial. In fact, I'd say any organisation that receives any public money which would include charities, Quangos and Universities also have a duty to remain impartial and within the law. What I find interesting is how there is now a real undercurrent of anarchy, where, if you don't like the law, you can just ignore it.
Stonewall are trying to find ways to remain relevant and are clinging on by their finger nails. Time LGB took back their flagship and a new T and all the rest of the alphabet had a more relevant group

Edited

I think the core of Stonewall has rotted and like a dead tree it’s time to cut it down. LGB Alliance should be the flagship going forward

is it just me or do the listed charitable objectives fail to mention the T??

A couple of them (universities, if I remember correctly) are "roll-over" from the Workplace Equality Index. The others, well, I imagine they really haven't given it much thought. Stonewall, if they have learned anything, will probably be more wary of providing anything even resembling legal advice now. We'll see.

I find it "interesting" that the Proud Employers list is not on Stonewall's public-facing webpages. Perhaps there really aren't many on the list, or perhaps they don't want the public to know who is on their list. But, they haven't been preventing their "devotees" from publicly announcing their membership, which is how I've found them.

They used to publish their rankings, until shit started hitting fans.

SexMatters had the older list and was crossing employers off as they dropped out.

Its depressing how much money, time, and energy is poured down the drain with this nonsense. It reminds me of collecting cards - just pointless points for pointless prizes.

Yeah. We see you Stonewall. 👀😠

They're clearly having some financial difficulties, so who knows how long they will continue to be in a position to "motivate and inspire"?

So these organisations have learned nothing about safeguarding over the years? They are not aware that Stonewall gave incorrect interpretations of the Law? We need a successful legal case to remind public bodies of the need to be apolitical.

@BridgetPhillipsonIsACowardlyJobsworth
Thank you for answering, and please don’t worry if what I said is just too confused.

I am not sure exactly what words to use, but I think Kemi Badenoch said that, though it should be fine for the police to have an association of their own where they meet up, say in a pub, there should not be an internal group within the force dedicated to diversity ( race in the context she was speaking of).

If she did say this, I was extrapolating and wondering if Stonewall working with the police, say, or any other public body, would lead to that body fostering an internal nucleus dedicated to the trans branch of diversity in just the way she said causes trouble ( by creating hierarchies of equality rights etc)?

I see, well, if she did say that, I suppose there would have to be an internal "Stonewall Group" specifically, wouldn't there, to be discouraged or even banned? Rather than, say, an internal LGBTQwhatever group, because if you're not allowed the LGBTQwhatever group, then I suppose you wouldn't be allowed to have a SEEN group either? Not sure if that's what she meant?

Imperial is not seeking Stonewall Proud Employers accreditation this year, and, according to a source familiar with the matter, is reconsidering its membership of the organisation for the 2026-27 academic year.

This sounds like a good thing, a very good thing, could it be the activist's death grip is slipping and there's sunshine at the end of the tunnel. 🤞

A bit of news for those wondering about the HE sector and the new Stonewall Proud Employers scheme:

Imperial College

https://felixonline.co.uk/articles/imperial-plans-to-withdraw-from-stonewall-membership-over-free-speech-concerns/

Update 27 November 2025: Imperial has confirmed they will not be seeking Proud Employers accreditation this year.

A source familiar with the matter told Felix that Imperial is reconsidering its membership of Stonewall Proud Employers scheme after several years, and is likely to withdraw from its accreditation.
The Proud Employers Accreditation scheme is an opportunity for employers to get feedback on their LGBTQ+ policy and receive a rating. The membership, which is distinct from the accreditation, gives staff access to extra support from Stonewall, one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ rights organisations, and more feedback on submissions for accreditation. Imperial joined Stonewall in 2005.

In April [2025], the Supreme Court of the UK issued a judgement on the meaning of sex for the purposes of the Equality Act 2010. Following guidance from the EHRC and conversations with the Office for Students, Imperial revised its policies about trans+ people that might have inadvertently restricted free speech and removed the section about the legal framework supporting trans rights.

This year, the College has renewed its Stonewall membership but is not planning to submit for accreditation due to concerns about free speech, a source familiar with the matter explained.

Imperial College Union response:
https://eactivities.union.ic.ac.uk/upfiles/committeemeetingpaper/6990

https://felixonline.co.uk/articles/union-council-report/

[16 January 2026]

During the last Union Council meeting, which took place on Tuesday 9th December, 2025, four papers were approved. Felix breaks down their content.
^^
1 - ICU’s Role Supporting the Renewal of Imperial’s Stonewall Membership
Imperial has been a member of Stonewall, one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ rights organisations, since 2005. Their Proud Employers Accreditation scheme, which is distinct from membership, provides employers that subscribe with a “flexible framework” to get feedback on their LGBTQ+ policy.

Imperial is not seeking Stonewall Proud Employers accreditation this year, and, according to a source familiar with the matter, is reconsidering its membership of the organisation for the 2026-27 academic year.
