This prompts me to wonder why I never seem to be able to settle down to read nowadays except if I’m on a plane or train or sometimes on holiday. I’m sitting in the kitchen idly MNing or doing a sudoku while periodically checking if it’s stopped raining (I got halfway through some gardening yesterday but every time I think about going outside the rain starts again). Why can’t I go and sit in a comfy chair with the book I started while on holiday? (Or just put on my old coat and go outside anyway).

I think I read a Georgette Heyer book once, and enjoyed it but no idea which it was.

The character with the most hidden depths is Miss Fishguard!

Actually I’d love to read the book from her viewpoint.

Having enviously watched a neighbour using one of those mini-JCBs in their garden, it occurred to me that I'd pay good money for entry to a theme-park where grown-ups got the chance to drive diggers and dumpers and all things black and yellow😄

My granny's expression of shock - 'Jesus, Mary and holy St Joseph!' - was never more apt!

For me, Kitty and Freddy are great but the absolute hero of the book I'd marry in a heartbeat is Freddy's father, Lord Legerdown. He is a delight.

@MarieDeGournay I like the skills in football, like being able to run at full tilt while very gently and deftly guiding a ball in the direction you want it to go, and keeping possession of it, without stepping on it and twisting your ankle. It's like patting your head a rubbing your tummy while running very fast and having 10 people trying to stop you.

That sounds suspiciously like multi-tasking Marie. I read somewhere recently that a project - at Brunel University I think - had concluded that, contrary to popular belief, men are as able as women to multi-task, though only up to a point. They can't do it while having a conversation at the same time. It was suggested that this is the reason men just grunt if someone talks to them when they are busy.

Talking of fire risks, my smoke alarm went off this morning as I was taking a shower!

So there I was, wrapped in a towel, with wet hair and jumping up and down in the hall with a wooden spoon from the kitchen, trying to press the "off" button.

Don't know what set it off - it could have been the steam from the bathroom, but it's never done that before.

Just as well none of my neighbours' windows overlook my hall

P.S. I don't know how any of you could pass up a go on an adult bouncy castle. I'd have to do it, even if I only managed to walk across the thing instead of bouncing!

One of those adult bouncy castles showed up next to us yesterday - graduation party for their 18 year old son who is heading off to college in September. We’ll miss him - he’s a really nice (and very good-looking) boy who we pay to cut our grass, and he does a good job cheerfully. Luckily there are other teenagers in the neighbourhood!

Our neighbours are having a party today - they have an inflatable obstacle course that stretches all the way down their driveway and out onto the circus (we live in a cul de sac), and it is now full of pre-teen boys having an amazing time.

They did warn us in advance about this - and said we could have a go if we wanted, but I have decided I am way too old!

It's £649. That's nearly £650. For Lego!!!!

Ohhhh wow, @Magpiecomplex - that kit is amazing. I occasionally yearn for the Notre Dame kit but I don’t know where I’d put it, so I resist temptation.

I bought a cheap candle in Aldi last week and was very disappointed. The wick is too thin so it started to tunnel - burn leaving wax on the sides - and the scent was very weak.

This morning I came into the living room to discover I had left it burning all night (ADHD) but the room smelt heavenly and most of the wax left round the sides had melted.

I do not recommend this, obviously a fire risk, but a nice surprise.

I will raise my hand as another Georgette Heyer fan here. I don’t think I have a favourite heroine, though I certainly appreciate both Frederica (I recently re-read that one) and Kitty, but I think Sophy was the first one I loved.
