Reform sending private messages for support in Wigan

Hi all

Has anyone else had private messages from random people asking for suport for Reform in the coming by-election?

Catfishing is just pretending to be someone else and building an online relationship with people, either to satisfy some emotional need or to scam them financially or both.

There's been a lot of MNers who've given money to " struggling" mums over the years, and I suppose that's sort of a similar thing.

I'm not sure if pretending to be Reform to get screenshots to show how far right we all are would count as catfishing or not, but I suppose it's just a different form of the same thing.

There are all kinds of scammers and catfishers that can reel in the more gullible by adopting different identities for all kinds of purposes. I've never had anything like that happen on here to be fair, but I've seen enough documentaries to know it happens.

Like you'll have a romance scammer get his "friend" to contact you to vouch for his genuineness when it's just him under another name.

Ah, so you could send two PMs to the same person, but only if you started a new convo to do so? That doesn't seem like a good thing to allow, really!

I don't use PMs anyway. I was just seeing what was possible in regards to this thread, but it doesn't seem great that someone could be strung along by the same person using multiple name changes.

I can send in my different usernames, too. When I look down my PMs page, each convo specifies which username it's under.

(Which is just as well, 'cos I'd never remember and some are about personal stuff.)

You can make a new username just by typing it in the box.

I tried that and it said I could only use this one or one belonging to me.

Also, when I went to send a message using my other incognito name, I had to know what that was as I had forgotten it, it didn't come up as an option so I had to go back into my account so if I'd have invented a new one there and then, I'd have had to put my password in again to invent one, so the 'nephew' would have had to have known this, and put the password in to make the new name/s so the 'playing around on MN' line does seem like 'nephew' is rather aquainted with the whole process IMHO.

I've just tested this by sending you 2 PMs and can confirm this is the case...don't out my other user name, it is highly sensitive information. 😂

They will also know whether it's just the one account all the PMs came from.

As an aside, I don't understand how the folk on this thread saying the PMs came from different accounts, rather than different usernames on a single account, could know that? Without being MNHQ?

I deliberately did not name the user who messaged me, but it ties up with one of the names subsequently posted. I also did not use the name of the by election location and used the generic area and did not play along with their messaging, because I suspected it would be screenshot and posted 'see MN users are keen to help Reform' by the TRA posting it.

If I'd thought it was actually Reform I'd have posted on Site Stuff.

I did have a response from MNHQ who just said to ignore it.

The person who had 2 different user names contact them, and we have not been in any contact behind the scenes, would not know if there were 2 accounts or one account with 2 changed names, unless they know if it is impossible to name change on DMs. I've never tested that out but maybe they have?

It's all very odd.

MNHQ would know which account the posts came from. And whether they came from this person's log in or not. If they had they would have posted on here. Not left it to the account to inform people about what happened.
