It worries me that some people just read headlines like this and think all these women have children naturally. At least that’s the impression I got from reading the comments on this story. The surrogacy sometimes isn’t even mentioned.

What annoys me is when people think the person who contributed the genetic material is the “biological mother”. In my book the biological mother is the woman who carries and gives birth to the baby. The baby doesn’t know where its genes come from but it does know the voice and heartbeat of the woman who carried them.

Yes 100% agree. The genetic mother who provides the egg is important too, most people want to know their genetic background, but she is not the biological mother.

Yes there is a sort of forced jollity to the point of mania about her which might just because she's American but even sesame street was never this cloying.

Ive always been suspicious of these types but that Ruby Franke stuff has ramped up my cynicism ten fold.

millie bobbi brown has announced that she has adopted another baby. Along with her husband.

I’d initially thought - after the last adoption - that it was just that, but I wonder if it’s actually surrogacy. And if not that maybe adoption from abroad which is largely also a monetary/business transaction. Poor babies and birth mothers if that is the case.

The word adoption is being used on line and also on the BBC/ other news outlets. So I guess it is just that.

Celebrities are used to sell products. Makes no difference if its lip gloss, political opinions or social issues. Celebs could just disappear for a year and announce the birth of their baby, but they somehow need to make everyone aware they used surrogacy.

Its a smart move here because as more and more celebrities use surrogacy, fewer people can speak up. Fans will naturally support them, people who rely on them for their income wont say anything. They have famous friends to wont want to hurt them.

The discussion between the ethics of the process and the individuals involved becomes too complex.

There was a debate the other week in parliament instigated by 2 men who'd used surrogates to change the legal status of the commissioning party so that they're named as legal parent automatically at birth but it failed

Thanks for sharing. It’s interesting that red states have stricter laws on surrogacy and it’s the left wing which are more enthusiastic. The left wing thinks they’re so pro-woman but it’s a myth.

Every single one of the other roughly 350 octillion atoms in a newborn baby is supplied from the bloodstream of the gestating mother, either from food she has digested or (particularly in the calcium for the baby's bones) from her body actually pulling the required elements out of her own biological structures to give to the growing baby. That is surely a very biological process!

Personally I suspect its best not to use the term biological mother at all unless the genetic mother and the gestating mother are the same person - in which case she definitely is the biological mother.

Remember when female celebrities were heavily criticised for choosing elective C-sections and being too posh to push? Obviously I disapprove of that but the shift from that level of scrutiny to the mainstream acceptance of surrogacy is strange, especially given how many high profile cases seem more driven by preference than medical need.

To be fair the headline and article i read said they used a surrogate so it wasn't misleading really, why anyone would want a baby at 53 is beyond me,

I guess if you have nannies and night nurses, cooks and house keepers and cleaners, all you have to do is have cuddles and choose nice clothes. While getting a full nights sleep with no birth to recover from.
