Sadly, not a Monty Python sketch.

Matt Rattley, a large bearded bloke who wears giant fake breasts, appears to be happily working at Oxford Uni.

I was really hoping this wasn't true but there is even a youtube video with him talking while wearing the giant breasts and red lipstick, applied to a degree any circus clown would be accused of overdoing it. The video includes a slide stating he works as a lecturer and tutor in the Biochemistry Dept at Oxford. He's also on LinkedIn.

I mean, how obvious can it be that this is a sexual fetish which he is involving unconsenting students and staff in???

Dr P on X has been (correctly) very robust on this case:

""This is Matt Rattley saying, "I can do whatever I please and nobody can stop me".

This is highly antisocial, abnormal, boundary-violating, paraphilic behaviour.

And we should not be afraid to say so."

Just seen this.

Good to know you would take it seriously if a student said they felt uncomfortable.

Presumably though, most females who feel uncomfortable at being in the presence of large rubber boobs on show from a tutor will assume that they had better keep quiet or they'll get in trouble. The fact that it's a staff member creates an impression that it's all approved by the university, so it'd be foolish to question it.

And getting to punish women for saying no is a key part of the attraction for AGP fetishists. It's absolutely a misogynist power game.

I've been struggling with how to put this, and I'm going to offend someone whoever way I do, but at least there was a level of honesty to Simon Goldhill's appalling behaviour, and I say that as an ex student of his, whereas with this man, it feels worse somehow.

I think it's about understanding that it's about covert behaviour like this as well as overt behaviour like Simon Goldhill's. Both are as bad as each other and involve manipulation of others and power for sexual purposes.

Covert, however, tends to be enabled more than others.

For the record, if any student comes to me and tells me that a tutor is making them feel uncomfortable, I will absolutely pursue the matter. As will my colleagues. I'm not afraid to whistleblow; I've done it before. There are still many instances of abuse of power in academia, and it needs to stop.

Complaints about a tutor from people who have never even met said tutor are a completely different story.

I am going to give every colleague (and every student) the benefit of the doubt until there is evidence to the contrary.

Vilifying someone with no evidence = witch hunt.

@oxfordfeminist <sigh> indeed. How do you think that St Hildas would react to someone complaining that they felt harassed by this man?
I think it would go something like this

I will try to articulate it more later, if I can get my head around it.

@oxfordfeminist Teaching and research come first.

No, safeguarding students comes first. Expecting them to complain, in the coercive culture that Queer studies has created at universities, is naive at best. Even if this man is entirely innocent of anything other than ignorance, there will be a thousand fetishists and predators watching and noting exactly what they can get away with. Queer people are removing boundaries without considering or without caring about the danger of what they are doing. This batshittery is affecting working class and poor and vulnerable women way more than the academics pushing it.

You can be part of the problem in academia, or part of the solution. There is no sitting on the fence with this ideology.

GirlsInGreen · 27/04/2026 19:41

"Sigh" says an Oxford Feminist, fuck me it must be something to live up where the air is rarified.

To not even be able to imagine how fucking grotesque and alarming this might be for other women.

Matt sitting in his parody tits, using students as wank fodder. "SIGH"

You are unbelievable. A man dressed in giant fake tits is abusive. Where are your boundaries? Can all men trample on them or only when they identify as 'queer'.

Genuinely amazes me how utterly unaware some people are about gaslighting dynamics like this and how it feeds into abuse scenarios. Giving untouchability/sacred caste status, boundary-flouting with others' discomfort to see how well it holds, first gradually and then to more extremity is a key red flag. It's all boiling frog stuff to see what you'll let them get away with and normalise and enable him in. Seems like he already is. Which you can tell by the duper's delight smile. Wilful blindness to the thrill he's getting. Nobody cares about the students. I expect they're all expected to swallow any discomfort and "reframe it" to fawn over him too.

  • Sexually inappropriate clothing in the workplace - red flag, no boundary, nothing is said (I bet there would be if a female tutor wore such low-cut tops, and most wouldn't.)
  • Fake prosthetic breasts very obviously worn by man in the workplace - "ah, no it's all fine, just self expression", again, red flag, no boundaries set, "ugh those horrible people commenting, what bigots". Big grin, look what I'm getting away with...

What's next, I wonder. The whole "I'm being victimised" DARVO shite I expect.

"Sigh" indeed.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 27/04/2026 19:35

Is AGP automatically evidence of one or the other? I didn't know.

(For what it is worth, I genuinely think that unless it falls within her narrow parameters and experience, oxfordfeminist has absolutely no idea what abuse of power looks like.)

ArabellaScott · 27/04/2026 19:31

oxfordfeminist · 27/04/2026 18:36

Sigh. I know what abuse of power looks like. (FWIW I was a student of Simon Goldhill many years ago... I won't say more, but it was uncomfortable.)

Being a trans or queer academic does not in itself constitute abusive behaviour. It's amazing that I even have to say this in the 21st century.

In fact, in past centuries, one can find far more flexible notions of gender identity and sexual identity than are evident on an MN thread like this one.

Is this man 'trans' or 'queer'? What leads you to make this assertion?

KittyWilkinson · 27/04/2026 19:30

So having Simon Goldhill (disgraced pervy Classics academic Oxon) slobber over them was uncomfortable for the alleged academic upthread. Luckily, someone else had the guts to speak up, and he was sacked.

But a man wearing huge fetish fake breasts wobbling in your face in your seminar is to be accepted. Nothing offensive about that apparently, no student has dared complain, he's living his true self.

St. Hilda's prospective students take note.

ArabellaScott · 27/04/2026 19:29

I'm appalled we are at the stage that a man can wear a pair of fake breasts to work and someone claims this is not evidence of his abuse.

A paraphilia often involves the non consensual participation of others - exhibitionism is a neighbour of indecent exposure.

This is not okay.

happydappy2 · 27/04/2026 19:28

it's disgusting......no student should be faced with that. Deeply concerning though what internet porn has done to mens minds-how many seemingly 'normal' looking males are deviant perverts?

Also, I'm sorry you had an uncomfortable time as a student of Simon Goldhill. He abused his power as a tutor exactly as big tits guy is abusing his power as a tutor. I'm interested. Have you internalised your distress at the - shall we call it harassment - you endured and thought it was normal? Or thought that if you had to deal with it other students should be able to deal with it too? Have you blamed yourself? So if they are experiencing discomfort with the situation they must be to blame too? Or did no-one step in to protect you, so you won't step in to protect students today who are experiencing harassment? Are you worried about being accused of being a terf if you object? Worried that calling out 'queer' folk will label you transphobic. Because your reaction to this situation is utterly bizarre.

‘No evidence’.

Well there’s couple of things about this guy I’ve noticed.

If you can't comprehend that a bearded man wearing an enormous pair of fake tits to work is a "fetish", then it doesn't say much for your own critical thinking skills, frankly. Nor your social awareness. Nor your understanding of men's fetishes or those who've been impacted by them. Or boundaries and consent, or care of your students, come to that.

You're a gullible enabler, basically, displaying precisely the kind of woolly-minded handwavery that abusers, fetishists and others who seek to push others' personal boundaries deiberately seek out. It's not very intelligent behaviour at all. So I'd drop the faux intellectual snobbery if I were you. Your lack of awareness is embarrassingly naive, not a sign of intellectual superiority.

Yep.

Trying to argue for the rights of a man wearing fetish prosthetic of sexualised body parts to work in a position of authority where he is advising or teaching young people is the Emperor's New Clothes taken to its most absurd extreme.

Does the phrase ' rape culture' ring any bells?

TeenLifeMum · 27/04/2026 19:00

Dress code in my office is “no bright trousers and skirts to the knee” but I bet they’d be too scared to challenge a bloke doing this.

Why do you keep using ‘them’ instead of ‘him’ for Matt Rattley?

Maybe she’s talking about the comedy tits?

CassOle · 27/04/2026 18:59

Sycophants.

CousinBette · 27/04/2026 18:57

oxfordfeminist · 27/04/2026 18:09

Exactly. The point of this definition is that for the behaviour to constitute harassment, the victim would need to have actually interacted with the person in question. Not just taken a dislike to them on the basis of stuff they've read about them on the internet.

I'm off to do some marking now. Curiously enough, the marks will have nothing to do with the way the students who submitted the work choose to dress during my tutorials.

Why do you keep using ‘them’ instead of ‘him’ for Matt Rattley?

KittyWilkinson · 27/04/2026 18:55

Ooh I've been deleted!

Must go and sit on the naughty step.

Hopefully no one wearing massive rubber tits passes me by or they'll have my eye out.

@oxfordfeminist I get what you're saying, but for me (another feminist academic) the parody of "womanhood" this man is displaying, and the contempt it demonstrates for actual women, is what is wrong here. His choice of clothing and that awful joke shop, pantomime false breast plate is just basically insulting to women.

And that's before we start on the lack of professionalism in the way he's dressing.

I'm sorry you had those encounters with Goldhill. FWIW, he's been very helpful to me on a couple of occasions - but then this was only a couple of years ago, and I'm a few years older than him! Men who use their power over undergrads like that are despicable (I have friends who tell stories of a certain T. Eagleton, so it's not related to political allegiances or discipline).
