Younger generations being pro trans

PeachyDaisy · 10/04/2026 05:22

I know many are saying the trans debate is over, but I think it has only just begun. And the reason is the younger generation. Studies show young people are the most supportive of transwomen going into women's spaces amongst all groups. In 20 years, these people will be in positions of power making decisions where they can enact their beliefs.

Also most of the western world has fallen to trans ideology (which activists will use as credibility for their ideology). I don't buy the argument that as long as it is just in EU/Australia/CA/ NZ then it is contained.

Having the laws on our side and sex matters fighting is great, but it feels like little consolation if we have to spend the next 50 years constantly in a court room suing organisations as they continue to to flaunt the law. It is like wack a mole, you stop one stop one organisation from doing it whilst another one pops up.

go into any fandom popular with young people and everyone has pronouns in their bio and this stuff is treated like the normal thing, and everyone accepts JKR is the "evil" one. it's depressing.

Yeah, but HP still remains by far one of the most popular fandoms, including with young people. For all their cries of JKR being evil, those young people still consume every new bit of HP that comes out as soon as it appears. When it comes to putting their actions where their mouth is, a whole lot of young people are just nowhere to be found anymore.

That paper uses data from 1991-2007, doesn't include anyone born after 1989, and has nothing to do with trans issues. What they mean by "gender ideology" is the extent to which people agree with statements like: "‘All in all, family life suffers when the woman has a full time job"

They find that older people are more traditional / conservative, that people get more traditional as they get older, but that there's still a trend towards less conservative attitudes over time.

This is actually bad news for TRAs - it shows that attitudes can and do shift over time within a cohort. So as well as current teens being less into gender ideology than those of five or ten years ago, we can also expect the 20-somethings to grow out of it over time. Of course not all of them, but it's reasonable to expect it to return to being a fringe view that's largely regarded as uncool.

Edited

It’s not actually a study about trans gender ideology - its a study about “Gender ideologies” - ie attitudes towards gender [sex] roles and how those are shaped by which birth cohort you belong to and the effects of aging. Ie, people born in the 1960’s will have had certain views on men and women's roles in the domestic and working spheres, these will have changed (become more conservative) as they aged; people born in the 80’s will have had another perspective on men and women's roles, that will have been shown to change as they aged… and again become more conservative.

The paper is NOT about the form of ‘gender ideology’ that has evolved in the last 10 years that relates to trans gender issues.

There are some really concerning studies that show that young people become more conservative on trans issues as they get older, however they still remain considerably more pro trans than older generations. Which would suggest each current generation become increasingly more pro trans even in old age.

Birth cohort, ageing and gender ideology: Lessons from British panel data
Birth cohort, ageing and gender ideology

This research is not discussing what you think it is, in academic and sociological research ‘gender ideologies’ has nothing to do with trans issues: this piece of research is about social attitudes to beliefs about traditional or egalitarian social roles for men and women rather than transgender issues. It studies how people's views on gender change as they get older and how different generations view gender roles. It looks at British survey data to see if older generations are more traditional and how aging affects these beliefs over time…

Google is not your friend if you don’t actually read the research it throws up.

I think I can offer a unique persective on this topic- an insider perspective- as someone who certainly brings down the mean age here on mumsnet. I pre-emptively apologise for the length of the post to follow, but if you're the curious sort, you're welcome!

I'm 18, I study in an fairly 'progressive' school in the UK (think trans flags in classrooms and common areas, no I'm not exaggerating.) there's a large focus on this sort of inclusion, and find myself amongst the emerging TRAs of my generation. I also know quite a few trans-identifying people, so have experience to talk of them as well.

There are certainly people who do not allign with trans ideology in my generation, the tail-end of gen z, but these opinions are unpopular amongst the majority. I cannot be honest about my views except with a select few; my most trusted.

The thing about people my age is that many are completely uninterested in statistical data, facts, the different ways of thinking and interpeting the world. Unless it already affirms and verifies their pre-chosen position and political ideals, they don't care (Or perhaps, fully unmotivated in finding out).

Things that contradict the idea TWAW are brushed of as bigotry immediately, called 'facism' and 'right wing b*llocks' with no second thought required. It must be easy for their brains, no logical processes are required, 'vibes' and 'whimsy' rule over all. These people are the majority of 'progressive' left-wing youth in my life. As a left-wing teenager, I find it dissapointing. They're only TRA-alligned leftists because they've been told it's the most moral– the most kind– the most 'good' and the only valid, dimensional political position.

They're told on social medias like TikTok and Reddit that any alternative opinion is inherintely evil and stupid. For evidence, look only to how they treat conservatives and reform voters, laughing at them with the insult 'singular GCSE'. That anyone who disagrees must 'educate' themselves in their 'correct' views– for they are the epitome of education and model all correct, most accurate, opinions. I can't fully explore this here, I'd be up all night writing so much I'd probably qualify as a sociologist, but we all have access to the social media posts and comments I speak of. It's also evidenced by the co-operation of 'TERF' as a derogatry term against women, simply MENTIONING someone has gender-critical ideology is enough of an insult in their view. No arguments needed when you can have a single word 'KO' any opposition. (In their eyes, anyway)

I mention all this because I think it's relevant in why so many vehemently follow trans-ideology, why so many even consider transitioning themselves.

The reality is most of us have been on social media since early pre-teens being fed other's opinions; no chance to honestly explore any real evidence and arguments. From the onset of exploration we were told 'TWAW, TMAM, TERF bad, TA good, gender is a social construct and simultanously real and innate, people just want to pee'.

Form the opinion- then find argument. That's the order of the movement and why TRAs fail so spectacularly in honest debate. Because the arguments don't sway their way so they must resort to slogans and insults to fight-the-fight for them.

Sure, it is successful in recruitment. It's easy, quick, by adopting trans-ideology they face less resistance. They're supported and celebrated even by schools, institutions.

So that's why people side with TRAs, perhaps even become one themselves.

But there's the other side, what is the 'Trans Trend'? Why are more and more people adopting trans identity? I can also offer insider perspective on this, at times in my early teen years on the brink of puberty where I identified with the TQ+ crowd. But mine is the TM story, not the TW one.

I looked at my body and felt completely disconnected from it, like I wasn't 'girl' or 'woman' at a base level at all. Bla-bla-bla, typical story of any TIF. On TikTok, Discord, I see girls, women ACTUALLY 'becoming' boys, men. It was so convincing. I gave myself an androgynous name and identified as a 'demi-boy'. I knew I could never actually identify as a male, that felt a bit silly back then still. But I can confidently say I grew out of that by getting more comfortable with my own body. I didn't identify into that crowd for long, this was around 2020-2022 when it was in peak popularity.

A lot of my peers were 'trans' around this time as well, there's certainly an element of peer-pressure. 'So-and-so has a cool new name, look, he's got a haircut, new pronouns, that straight girl is now a gay boy' All my peers who 'transitioned' around this time eventually came off it at varying rates, coincidentally they were all female.

The same phenomena can occur at any time, especially with the internet. Trans activism has very consistant backing, publicity, and methods of popularisation. People my age (me included) spend most of their time on screens and social media so it's almost inevitable you'll fall down rabbitholes.

Young people are fed the idea of gender as the feeling, the emotion. The identity that composes their whole. That you are the sum of all your identities, nothing else. Once that becomes firmly lodged in there it's very difficult to reason out.

Why do you think some become so utterly enraged when one opposes their position? We're challenging the ideology they've built upon their entire concept of being, identity, core values and they can't possibly entertain the idea that it could be incorrect. Of course, this only applies to the more extreme TRAs and trans idealogues, a decent number lack 'brainwashing' to this extent. Young or old, the basic principles amongst the group fares pretty similar. I can elaborate further later upon request but it's late.

Simply put, I'd say willful ignorance. Acception without question. That woke=good by its very definition. Combine with natural youthful ego & inability to bring one's own views into question and you create the ultimate TRA weapon. Bonus points if they stumble across the ideology during sexual development and internalise it, or worse, in pornography in which these identies are fetishised.

Perhaps there is no way of simply putting it.

LeftieRightsHoarder · 12/04/2026 00:52

Sorry, I see Helleofabore has already posted this very useful thread.
Worth repeating, though!

And I do wonder how much the results of surveys may be skewed by people mistakenly thinking that ‘transgender women’ or ‘transwomen’ means women who identify as men.
The real number supporting women’s single-sex rights may be even higher than it appears.

Crwysmam · 11/04/2026 21:09

I recently bumped into the trans pupil from my DS’s year at school , they are now early 20s and no longer identifying as female, more gender neutral/goth. School had not made a huge song and dance about gender. They put in place safeguarding policies and maintained single sex spaces. By not involving parents the children were mainly accepting and just got on with it. The individual was not a trans gender activist, just mixed with the girls more than the boys.

The year didn’t judge and talking to DS who is very emotionally intelligent I think hat they just realised that the trans pupil was struggling with mental health in the same way others were. There were no huge debates or disagreements . I think because most of them had known them when they were identifying as male they didn’t see them any differently when they decided to identify as a girl. In fact they admired their bravery in turning up for prom in a lovely prom dress. But at no point did it influence their GC views. They just learned that tolerance was preferable and that it encouraged tolerance in other ways.

Maybe because there was no insistence on use of single sex spaces by the pupil or there family or that GC views would not be discouraged it didn’t really cause the problems that were anticipated.

It was good preparation for the outside world. When people don’t make a fuss it sort of takes the wind out of the sails of activists.

@ThatBlackCat; sorry I was being sarky with the 'anti trans' thing! 😃but I totally agree with you. Yet another swipe at women.

DD and her friends don’t support trans/gender ideology. They are 23. HTH

Anti- trans feminism board? Is there a new board? Link please

'anti-trans' is a way for far right incels to say we're 'anti men'. They know they cannot say anti men, without looking like neanderthals. So they have found a loophole. 'anti-trans'. They can be misogynist chauvinist pigs with a veneer of respectability.

The sad thing for men like him is that he and his fellow MRAs are out of touch with the real world. Poll after poll after poll shows that as each year passes, the 'trans rights' (read: Mens rights) lose more and more favour with the public the more his fellow men piss in public on feminist statues and smash windows and throw punches at the eye sockets of 72 year old women. They are losing the war and are becoming increasingly desperate and erratic. Feminists are winning the day, and those like him have to resort to..... relieving themselves to Andrew Tate videos. And trying to relive their glory days.

ThatBlackCat · 11/04/2026 19:46

The far right incel movement are getting increasingly desperate.

Oh look, the anti-women misogynist bigots are out in force. These are the dying gasps, the death throes of the Mens Rights Activists.

As Helen Joyce said it is the parents of trans kids and activists who will be fighting this battle the longest as they are the ones who will have to admit that they have caused catastrophic harm.

100%. It’s going to be a hard pill to swallow that you allowed or in some cases even encouraged your 12 year old child to believe something patently untrue (you can be the opposite sex) and then let them take harmful medication and go on to mutilate their bodies. When it was obviously a terrible idea to begin with and many people tried to warn you but you called them bigots.

Agree, Gen Z is definitely more “woke” than Gen Alpha. I really feel for all who got caught up in transitioning aged 13 and now have irreversibly changed their bodies (I’m 25 and knew a few like this)

logiccalls · 11/04/2026 12:39

NRTFF but the opening lines indicate collusion in a damaging fantasy: Nobody can self-declare himself to be a king, and be taken seriously by the general public. There is no 'transitioning' into it. And no man would be described as a 'trans-king' .
No man can 'transition' into being a woman. Nobody can sensibly collude with him by describing him as a 'trans-woman' (or, as a 'trans-baby', to name one other popular fetish). It is laughable.

Iraniantrump · 11/04/2026 10:31

MoltenLasagne · 10/04/2026 08:51

I'd say the majority of those who have "transitioned" in the last ten years, but there are definitely old school "transsexuals" around as well.

I'd agree that the intensely pro-trans cohort seems to be those now at, or just left uni so 19-25. The school kids I know all seem to eye-roll at best, or be rather disparaging at worst.

Iraniantrump · 11/04/2026 10:25

I’m 25, when I was at at school trans trend was in full swing. From what I’ve over heard when taking my kids to the park Gen Alpha’s (current teenagers) take the piss out of all the pronouns and don’t believe in it.

Definitely a lot less “woke” then my generation (gen Z)

Dragonasaurus · 11/04/2026 10:11

My teenagers are fully GC, as are most of their friends. Slightly older family (mid-twenties) were full on GI until one of them had a baby girl. The idea of her being alone in the pool changing room with a middle-aged male sort of brought it home!

CraftandGlamour · 11/04/2026 09:54

LazyCatLtd · 10/04/2026 10:32

Haha! Thats a great idea. If I told my kids I am now a man they’d be utterly horrified.

It was always my plan to do this with my DSDs if they went down this route. I was going to come out as NB with frequently rotating made up pronouns. Luckily for them, and me, we did not need to test drive that strategy.
