Younger generations being pro trans

PeachyDaisy · 10/04/2026 05:22

I know many are saying the trans debate is over, but I think it has only just begun. And the reason is the younger generation. Studies show young people are the most supportive of transwomen going into women's spaces amongst all groups. In 20 years, these people will be in positions of power making decisions where they can enact their beliefs.

Also most of the western world has fallen to trans ideology (which activists will use as credibility for their ideology). I don't buy the argument that as long as it is just in EU/Australia/CA/ NZ then it is contained.

Having the laws on our side and sex matters fighting is great, but it feels like little consolation if we have to spend the next 50 years constantly in a court room suing organisations as they continue to to flaunt the law. It is like wack a mole, you stop one stop one organisation from doing it whilst another one pops up.

Wasn’t Hogwarts Legacy a bestseller in gaming?

Knocked CoD off the no1 spot when it came out and is the 19th best selling game of all time. Even my sometimes trans Identifying daughter bought it, loved it and insisted her dad and I come and play it - or at least watch her playing it! [Yawn, just what is that all about?]

But yeah, ‘cringey’. Not.

I’d like to see the source that the “younger generations call it cringey, bigoted etc” which is a fairly sweeping statement @MashaPav

Tut tut, you know that whole sources and evidence thing only works one way right??

How can they be far right when transphobia is ideology from the far right? The entire anti trans movement is funded by far right groups and money.

Firstly bullshit, but secondly TRAs are basically the same as Incels (Trancels).

They hate women, refuse to listen to them, don't respect their boundaries, don't care about their consent.

Whether that's far right or far left, it's kind of all the same. Horseshoe theory in action.

Yup. And that was despite calls to boycott it.

Any source for that as last time a poll was done it was Millenials in their late thirties and early forties who still consume the media from the former author. However the younger generations call it cringey, bigoted etc. So I would love to see a source backing your claims that “young people love it”

LOL. Source: my experience in fandom.

And what poll are you referring to, exactly?

Yeah, but HP still remains by far one of the most popular fandoms, including with young people. For all their cries of JKR being evil, those young people still consume every new bit of HP that comes out as soon as it appears. When it comes to putting their actions where their mouth is, a whole lot of young people are just nowhere to be found anymore.

'anti-trans' is a way for far right incels to say we're 'anti men'. They know they cannot say anti men, without looking like neanderthals. So they have found a loophole. 'anti-trans'. They can be misogynist chauvinist pigs with a veneer of respectability.

The sad thing for men like him is that he and his fellow MRAs are out of touch with the real world. Poll after poll after poll shows that as each year passes, the 'trans rights' (read: Mens rights) lose more and more favour with the public the more his fellow men piss in public on feminist statues and smash windows and throw punches at the eye sockets of 72 year old women. They are losing the war and are becoming increasingly desperate and erratic. Feminists are winning the day, and those like him have to resort to..... relieving themselves to Andrew Tate videos. And trying to relive their glory days.

Thanks from me too for Mouse Queen for her post. i do wonder, will this ever go away, in ten, fifteen years? Well, go away in the sense of no longer being a mainstream issue, I don't want to exterminate trans people. 😀It is so embedded in our institutions, particularly the Civil Service and the universities.

MarieDeGournay · 03/08/2026 11:45

Thank you for your very thoughtful and interesting post MouseQueen.

I met someone I was at Uni with the other day - I moved away and haven't been in touch with any of them over the years - and it reminded me of how much groupthink went on amongst students back then too, but that there were also varying levels of engagement with the groupthink - we all went along with it ostensibly, because it was the line of least resistance, but we all had our own private thoughts..

I guess it would be more or less the same with current generation, but social media is such a huge magnifier of trends, and reinforcer of trends, that it must be so much more difficult to be a 'dissenter' these days.

As soon as we left the uni campus, we were surrounded by an outside world which largely speaking saw our ideas as 'typical bloody students, wait till they have to earn a living!'.

But these days, as well as the academic community, there are online communities that people belong to, so the challenging, regulating influence of the outside world may be missing from a lot of young people's lives.

I suppose it's possible? likely? that today's orthodoxy of TWAW, #bekind except to women, JKR is evil, etc, might go the way of all zeitgeisty orthodoxies.

There's already some anecdotal evidence from posters on here that their children's social circles are not into gender stuff at all, and there's quite a bit of eyerolling about pronouns and special categories and so on.

And then there's you, MouseQueen - thoughtful, observant, rebellious, critical, rational, brave - I hope you find other young women with the same strength and clarity of thought to support each other; they definitely exist e.g. the founders of The Cambridge University Society of Women.

Thank you, MouseQueen.

And yours too AnonyMumAuDHD -
sometimes you have so much to share that only a long post will do it justice, and what you both have to say is very informative so thank you both.

AnonyMumAuDHD · 03/08/2026 10:44

@MouseQueen thank you so much for your post. I think, though, that in many respects it speaks of the power and influence of schools in this. My DC’s school was very radicalised and at one point more than 70% of my daughter’s year group identified as trans/LGB (the hetero element appropriated NB, demi, pan, Ace and Bi labels so that they were not left out). The dept HT was an absolute foaming pro-trans advocate [okay, activist], had mermaids stuff everywhere and reported me to social services when i wrote to her asking her NOT to socially affirm my DD at school, as we had already met her part-way by supporting a deedpoll name change and sought to allow her time to mature, have counselling and work out who she was. She is 21 and was the group most isolated and impacted by Covid/lockdown and enforced interaction via Ipads/tech devices and thus SM.

My DS attended the same school, and is your age. The Deputy HT left when he was 14 and the school noticeably dialled back on that issue, using PSHE for other essential issues - eg the school funded, along with a large group of parents, free places for half a dozen Ukrainian children who had been offered homes within our locality. They gave talks on the experience of surviving war, of seeking refuge, of leaving their male relatives behind to fight and knowing that some would likely die and that they would not see them again. I think this completely supplanted gender politics and trans activism because the children now realised that their new peers’ life experience was utterly harrowing compared to the trauma of being misgendered by mummy.

My DS had a friend who trans ID’d at that age and he and his year group were kind but a majority of them vocally rejected that TWAW, that notions of gender trumped bio sex, etc and on the final effort to hold a trans educational PSHE session, chaos broke out as the majority would not have it. The external company (booked by the dep HT who had now left) walked out before the session could be delivered and the staunch, trans supporting minority were left distressed, many in tears. It was never tabled again while he was there (left at 16) and I understand it hasn’t been since. His trans (autistic) friend desisted by the time they were 17 (using non gendered pronouns to protect that child’s privacy/ID, not because of NB nonsense). DS attended a tech college for A Levels - there was absolutely none of this there - not a single blue/green haired person in a cohort of thousands (despite there being a highly subscribed hairdressing and beauty course!). There is not a pride flag of any flavour anywhere, and no reference to LGB/LGBTQI+ anywhere on the college website. The tech college has a large, ethnically diverse cohort so clearly chooses to be utterly non political on all matters. There are no pro Pal or pro Israel posters or flags, either.

My DS is conflicted: due to his siblings issues and also because he knows mine/DH’s position on this, he has settled into understanding that you cannot change sex, that TWA not W, but that we should nonetheless #BeKind. He knows that many trans identifying people are troubled, ND, and therefore vulnerable so is not willing to ridicule or be cruel in vocally or impliedly rejecting their beliefs. I genuinely DO believe we should #bekind, compassionate, and supportive of young confused people who have adopted trans identities and who should be getting proper support from CAMHS etc, so I haven’t pushed back on this, but it is very clear that his peer group really are very sceptical.

And the difference between his year group and my DD is the presence of a trans activist teacher who was the second most senior staff member and head of pastoral care. And, at the college, the utter lack of any exposure or discussion of this issue at all. Once the Dep HT was removed from the picture (I’d love to know if she left voluntarily or was required to leave), the climate at his school changed completely. The lack of any of this stuff at the tech college and inoculated his latter peers from its influence too.

Thank you. This is an important post that demonstrates the toxic influence of a powerful adult in a school abusing their position. Fortunately there are changes on the way with the new SRE Health guidance for Sept 2026 having a focus on age appropriate sex / health education, working with parents and new safeguarding guidance that of course complies with the law.

There are clear guidelines about the role of external speakers, the primacy of the teacher's role and the school's responsibility to share all resources with parents. There are a few extracts below but it's worth parents reading the whole thing linked below.

It talks about gender reassignment and the protection afforded to those covered by the pc. It states that "when teaching this, schools should be mindful that beyond the facts and the law about biological sex and gender reassignment there is significant debate, and they should be careful not to endorse any particular view or teach it as fact. For example, they should not teach as fact that all people have a gender identity".

"Schools should avoid language and activities which repeat or enforce gender stereotypes. Schools should be mindful to avoid any suggestion that social transition is a simple solution to feelings of distress or discomfort"

Activist teachers and external groups will be unable to meet the requirement to be child centred and neutral because political / queer theory advocates promote gender identity as a fact, argue for the removal of single sex spaces, sport etc.

Also the new KCSIE (safeguarding) guidelines when published are framed by tthe SC judgment and state no undressing in front of the opposite sex, single sex toilets etc. These are basic safeguarding measures that some schools have deliberately flouted in recent years.

Parents finally have back up to get these political activists away from schools. We just need to be aware and use the guidance to insist schools comply if any are foolish enough to outsource their SRE / Health Ed to activists. It's going to need some emails no doubt as the trans lobby groups are gearing up to keep their access to children and activist teachers will no doubt attempt to help them.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/08/2026 11:14

I honestly think there are many who don’t actually want to pass at all.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 03/08/2026 11:13

I wonder if there is a (possibily unconscious) belief that if women just get used to seeing "women" who look very much like men, we'll stop noticing a difference and just take them as women? I don't mean as male people who are fine to be "women", but as actually female.

We won't, what actually happens is the more female-coded stuff turns up on men, the less we see it as female coded, but still that might be part of their underlying thinking.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/08/2026 11:11

Exactly, it’s all a charade. Many of them enjoy the power it gives them over people they come into contact with. “Do you dare, I can see your discomfort but you’re not going to say anything, are you”?

SwirlyGates · 03/08/2026 11:09

This "outing" business is all in the heads of the transwomen. We know you're men. You know you're men. You want to pretend that you're women (up to you, I guess) and you want us to pretend too. The only "outing" going on if you use the men's toilets or the disabled/accessible/gender neutral is if you believed that we genuinely believed you. But we didn't.

The paper the op linked defines “gender ideology” in the background statement:

Gender ideology, defined as “an individual's level of support for a division of paid work and family responsibilities that is based on the notion of separate spheres” (Davis and Greenstein, 2009:89), has received substantial sociological attention. Robust evidence demonstrates that individuals' beliefs concerning gender roles are intrinsically interwoven with their behaviors, opportunities and life outcomes.

I think I can offer a unique persective on this topic- an insider perspective- as someone who certainly brings down the mean age here on mumsnet. I pre-emptively apologise for the length of the post to follow, but if you're the curious sort, you're welcome!

I'm 18, I study in an fairly 'progressive' school in the UK (think trans flags in classrooms and common areas, no I'm not exaggerating.) there's a large focus on this sort of inclusion, and find myself amongst the emerging TRAs of my generation. I also know quite a few trans-identifying people, so have experience to talk of them as well.

There are certainly people who do not allign with trans ideology in my generation, the tail-end of gen z, but these opinions are unpopular amongst the majority. I cannot be honest about my views except with a select few; my most trusted.

The thing about people my age is that many are completely uninterested in statistical data, facts, the different ways of thinking and interpeting the world. Unless it already affirms and verifies their pre-chosen position and political ideals, they don't care (Or perhaps, fully unmotivated in finding out).

Things that contradict the idea TWAW are brushed of as bigotry immediately, called 'facism' and 'right wing b*llocks' with no second thought required. It must be easy for their brains, no logical processes are required, 'vibes' and 'whimsy' rule over all. These people are the majority of 'progressive' left-wing youth in my life. As a left-wing teenager, I find it dissapointing. They're only TRA-alligned leftists because they've been told it's the most moral– the most kind– the most 'good' and the only valid, dimensional political position.

They're told on social medias like TikTok and Reddit that any alternative opinion is inherintely evil and stupid. For evidence, look only to how they treat conservatives and reform voters, laughing at them with the insult 'singular GCSE'. That anyone who disagrees must 'educate' themselves in their 'correct' views– for they are the epitome of education and model all correct, most accurate, opinions. I can't fully explore this here, I'd be up all night writing so much I'd probably qualify as a sociologist, but we all have access to the social media posts and comments I speak of. It's also evidenced by the co-operation of 'TERF' as a derogatry term against women, simply MENTIONING someone has gender-critical ideology is enough of an insult in their view. No arguments needed when you can have a single word 'KO' any opposition. (In their eyes, anyway)

I mention all this because I think it's relevant in why so many vehemently follow trans-ideology, why so many even consider transitioning themselves.

The reality is most of us have been on social media since early pre-teens being fed other's opinions; no chance to honestly explore any real evidence and arguments. From the onset of exploration we were told 'TWAW, TMAM, TERF bad, TA good, gender is a social construct and simultanously real and innate, people just want to pee'.

Form the opinion- then find argument. That's the order of the movement and why TRAs fail so spectacularly in honest debate. Because the arguments don't sway their way so they must resort to slogans and insults to fight-the-fight for them.

Sure, it is successful in recruitment. It's easy, quick, by adopting trans-ideology they face less resistance. They're supported and celebrated even by schools, institutions.

So that's why people side with TRAs, perhaps even become one themselves.

But there's the other side, what is the 'Trans Trend'? Why are more and more people adopting trans identity? I can also offer insider perspective on this, at times in my early teen years on the brink of puberty where I identified with the TQ+ crowd. But mine is the TM story, not the TW one.

I looked at my body and felt completely disconnected from it, like I wasn't 'girl' or 'woman' at a base level at all. Bla-bla-bla, typical story of any TIF. On TikTok, Discord, I see girls, women ACTUALLY 'becoming' boys, men. It was so convincing. I gave myself an androgynous name and identified as a 'demi-boy'. I knew I could never actually identify as a male, that felt a bit silly back then still. But I can confidently say I grew out of that by getting more comfortable with my own body. I didn't identify into that crowd for long, this was around 2020-2022 when it was in peak popularity.

A lot of my peers were 'trans' around this time as well, there's certainly an element of peer-pressure. 'So-and-so has a cool new name, look, he's got a haircut, new pronouns, that straight girl is now a gay boy' All my peers who 'transitioned' around this time eventually came off it at varying rates, coincidentally they were all female.

The same phenomena can occur at any time, especially with the internet. Trans activism has very consistant backing, publicity, and methods of popularisation. People my age (me included) spend most of their time on screens and social media so it's almost inevitable you'll fall down rabbitholes.

Young people are fed the idea of gender as the feeling, the emotion. The identity that composes their whole. That you are the sum of all your identities, nothing else. Once that becomes firmly lodged in there it's very difficult to reason out.

Why do you think some become so utterly enraged when one opposes their position? We're challenging the ideology they've built upon their entire concept of being, identity, core values and they can't possibly entertain the idea that it could be incorrect. Of course, this only applies to the more extreme TRAs and trans idealogues, a decent number lack 'brainwashing' to this extent. Young or old, the basic principles amongst the group fares pretty similar. I can elaborate further later upon request but it's late.

Simply put, I'd say willful ignorance. Acception without question. That woke=good by its very definition. Combine with natural youthful ego & inability to bring one's own views into question and you create the ultimate TRA weapon. Bonus points if they stumble across the ideology during sexual development and internalise it, or worse, in pornography in which these identies are fetishised.

Perhaps there is no way of simply putting it.

Great post. It clearly has very deep roots in this generation. Thing is I think it is best seen as a sort of religious thing. It gives a huge emotional buzz and sense of self worth but it is difficult to argue with rationally. Humans LOVE this kind of thing. Religions or beliefs that give this feeling are inevitable.

It is very difficult to fight against it. The right leaning gender position is easier to spread because they have their own sense of affirmation and group identity and use actual religions as well. Very attractive to young men.

The gender crit argument made by feminists is way less attractive. It is also depressing. Gender stuff offers individual escape routes. The purple pill means you are locked into questioning society, but the popularity of genderist arguments and the surge of traditional thinking suggests there is no escape we are just locked into an eternal struggle. The best you can do is safeguarding.

Not sure there is a way round that at the moment. Yet I suspect that sooner or later something will swing back because youth trends are so big and changeable. I hear talk of pronouns is seen as a bit cringe.

As the TAs age up there is more chance of triggering a youth rebellion against status quo with TA gender stuff. It would just take a few charismatic and hot youngsters with existing social followings to do it. Look at what is happening with Sophie Cunningham as an example. Unthinkable 5 years ago.

Be interesting where we are in a few years.

ProfDrLapwing · 03/08/2026 09:48

@Helleofabore I’m a bit very late to the thread but thank you for all the stats.

They seem to show a hardcore of around 15% of 18-24 who are full on TWAW. That’s quite a small proportion considering this is probably the most indoctrinated cohort. And I would be very surprised if this figure doesn’t continue to fall as this group mature and gain more life experience. The following generation already sound more sceptical.

I look forward to the time when AGPs can no longer hide behind cruelly and cynically misled children but I do wonder what their next tactic will be.

This is really not true.
I think the percentages are exactly as what people see in other segments of the population and children's opinions are captured in the same way adult's are.

Seethlaw · 03/08/2026 06:45

@MouseQueen

Thank you for taking the time to write all this!

It's scary and depressing to see my worst fears confirmed ("Surely they don't just swallow it whole because it's The Right Thing To Do?"), but the way you explain it, especially with the influence of social media from a young age, makes a lot of sense.

Now I'm left to wonder how this utter lack of critical thinking will leave them to fare when they enter the "adult" world. They haven't been properly prepared, and the confrontation with a very complicated world out there will doubtless be outright painful 😐
