Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Why is sex the only protected characteristic that people want to, or are ‘allowed’ to, self identify into? by

This has been something that I mull over. Why is sex the only PC that society allows people to self id into with very little checks and balances? You can get your marker on your driving licence changed very easily.

disability: yes, I realise that people can self identify as disabled but if they want benefits associated with disability there is, quite frankly, a horrendous procedure to go through in order get benefits.

Age: if someone wanted to be older to get pension they wouldn’t be accepted or alternatively if they wanted to attend nursery but were 20 they would not be allowed. Think of the Scottish case of the man who pretended to be younger to be in high school again.

maternity: women who fake pregnancy are absolutely derided.

race: we all think of the obvious case of the women who faked being black but I’m also thinking about when you want to change your citizenship and the expensive, complicated and time consuming process you have to go through to achieve a change of citizenship.

Campaigners have fought for easy, cheap and dignified changes to “changing sex” (not possible as we know) but other PCs have very expensive, complicated and dehumanising process.

why is the PC of sex different?

this kinda reasoning makes me rage tho, like people with DSDs are utterly irrelevant to trans people. and two, the only thing you need to do to be trans, is self-identify. trans people aren't doing medical tests to ascertain if they are trans. they are just saying "i feel like I am".

it is just the stupidest freaking ideology that rests on utter BS, and yet... in many countries we have to live under it's tyrannical rule and we're hateful bigots if we disagree with it. it's 2026 and we're still hardly better off than we were in when JKR made her fated tweet at the end of 2019, in many ways, we are worse off.

nothing else has ever made me lose more faith in fellow humans. gender ideology is just the dumbest freaking pile of shit ever.

Oh absolutely!

What are the 'obvious reasons' that Karen White and Barbie Kardashian should not be in a men's prison?

Abuse by other prisoners? Safety? Like you can’t live in a society that condones abuse of anyone otherwise it’s a slippery slope, no?

confusedbydating · 28/03/2026 11:05

There’s so much staff on prisoner abuse… and prisoner on prisoner abuse.
men go into women’s prisons and harm them. The culture of the prisons mean they usually get away with it.
women are not safe in prison

So because women are at risk from male staff it's OK to put them at even greater risk by putting males in prison with them?

confusedbydating · 28/03/2026 11:06

spannasaurus · 28/03/2026 11:04

So you want a trans only prison?

idk I’m not a politician and I don’t know if this is financially viable or wanted. But I do think putting someone with a vagina (even if it is by surgery) into a man’s prison is safe or fair, no.

Women are a lot safer in a prison with only female prisoners then they are in a mixed sex prison

Idk. I don’t think they should be in a men’s or women’s prison. I think they should have protection plans based on individual needs.
oh give me the money and I will reform the prison system haha

I’d disagree - it’s not safe in women’s prisons either. It’s everyone’s problem!

The limit is when someone's rights impinge on someone else's.
So with your friend who is a woman who says she's a man, she changes her name from (e.g.) Susan to Steve. Fine.
She takes on stereotypically male-coded aspects of appearance like short hair and trousers. Fine.
She uses the men's loos or changing rooms. Not fine. Because both sexes need and should be confident that they are getting single-sex spaces when they are partially dressed or undressed/performing necessary intimate tasks/vulnerable.
She and maybe friends of hers require people to refer to her as 'he' or 'him'. Not fine. Because it's not true and it requires a mental adjustment/pause/stress every time.

He tends to frequent queer spaces because of attitudes like this, sadly. So a lot of your issues aren’t really issues.
idk i completely agree with most of your points but i don’t see how using pronouns of someone is any different to using their new married name?!

Solitary confinement? Supervised socialisation? I mean no they can’t demand to be in a woman’s prison but they can ask for protection from prisoners who would abuse them. Do you see where I’m coming from?

It’s not safe for a lot of men in prison - this is a problem that the prison service and men need to address. It’s not women’s problem.

So what prison do you suggest these men are housed in?

Karen White sexually assaulted female prisoners and Barbie Kardashian tried to rape his mother and rip the eyelids off a female social worker

Oh I agree, but OP stated that sex was the only PC that people want to identify into, when this is very clearly not the case.

Regarding not harming people - someone who self-identifies into a religion and lives closer to the school will get priority over someone who is genuinely of that religion who lives further away. So it’s not free of consequence for others.

Yes. I also pointed out that this also applies to religious or philosophical beliefs.

You can certainly argue that it's inequitable if a family has the funds to move closer to the school they want their child to go to and another family genuinely of a certain religion doesn't. But It's not the fault of the family with funds that the other one doesn't have them. There's all kinds of societal pressures behind that inequality.

Because transphobia and the type of men in these prisons mean it wouldn’t be safe for them there and they are human beings who deserve basic rights and dignity no matter what they’ve done?

wheres your limit? If someone says they want to identify as something and it’s not harming you, I’ve always been live and let live. Where is the limit for you?
a 25 yo deciding to live as a man isn’t harming you. Idk why you’re being so mean about him.

There's certainly a conversation to be had about the morality of pretending to be a particular religion (or suddenly rediscovering enthusiasm for a religion that is technically yours but which you haven't engaged with for a long time) for school purposes, but a crucial difference is that doing that doesn't impinge on other people’s safety, privacy or dignity in the way that men using women’s spaces does.

Why should i use false descriptions of people? If I'm talking about why someone like Karen Wight or Barbie Kardashian should not be in womens prison how is it helpful to refer to them as she rather than he.

No, that's why I called your style 'faux-naive'. And, again, it is changing as you continue to post.
i jus don’t get why you hate all trans people??:
Please, don't insult the intelligence of everyone on here by wheeling that old trope out. It's beneath your and everyone's dignity.

I’m fascinated to know what you mean by that. I’m not naive. I’m a member of the queer community and a traumatised rape survivor who will be out there with you campaigning for women only spaces.
