Why is sex the only protected characteristic that people want to, or are ‘allowed’ to, self identify into? by

This has been something that I mull over. Why is sex the only PC that society allows people to self id into with very little checks and balances? You can get your marker on your driving licence changed very easily.

disability: yes, I realise that people can self identify as disabled but if they want benefits associated with disability there is, quite frankly, a horrendous procedure to go through in order get benefits.

Age: if someone wanted to be older to get pension they wouldn’t be accepted or alternatively if they wanted to attend nursery but were 20 they would not be allowed. Think of the Scottish case of the man who pretended to be younger to be in high school again.

maternity: women who fake pregnancy are absolutely derided.

race: we all think of the obvious case of the women who faked being black but I’m also thinking about when you want to change your citizenship and the expensive, complicated and time consuming process you have to go through to achieve a change of citizenship.

Campaigners have fought for easy, cheap and dignified changes to “changing sex” (not possible as we know) but other PCs have very expensive, complicated and dehumanising process.

why is the PC of sex different?

It has to be a blanket NO of who to defend who?

It has to be a blanket no on sexual violence of EVERYONE to protect EVERYONE.
it can’t be ‘that person raped someone therefore now it’s a free for all to rape them’. Because then it becomes a slippery slope.

I’m not defending rapists. I’m refusing to condone sexual abuse of any type, and this includes putting people at risk of it no matter what they’ve done. Becuase like I said it has to be a blanket no to protect everyone

It has to be a blanket NO of who to defend who?

In 1813 Elizabeth Fry was prompted by a French-American Quaker, Stephen Grellet, who advocated sex segregation of prisons in Russia on his visit to the then Russian Empire, now Russia and Ukraine. She visited and was appalled at the conditions of women and girls at Newgate Prison. She was the first woman to give evidence to a House of Commons select committee about the sexual degradation of women and girls at the hands of both male prisoners and warders. This led directly to the Gaols Act 1823, which was introduced and supported by the Home Secretary Robert Peel.

Segregation by birth sex may have been a rough-and-ready solution but it was massively successful. Why would you want to mess with it by changing to some individually tailored BS? We don't have the resources for that, and in any case the sex-and-violence propensities of the sexes are so bimodal they're verging on binary. Keeping them separate is an easy win for safety.

So if you have a biological man who removed his penis and had a medically constructed vagina where would you put him?
because they didn’t exist in 1813 but they exist now.

You keep saying it nuanced but it doesn't appear you have thought about this at all other than people who think trans identified men shouldn't be in womens prisons must be transphobic.

Male prisoners can be protected in the male estate.

No I don’t think this but I think people who refuse to use people’s chosen pronouns but have no problem respecting a chosen name are a bit transphobic, yes

I've been thinking about it for a decade whereas you are unable to even understand that men have penises which they use to rape.

Men - the people with those penises - have power and authority over women so not one should EVER have been placed in a female jail.

You seem to think it is 'obvious' that they should so it is on you to explain why women matter less than men.

And have you even seen Karen White? Do you even know who you are defending here? There is no nuance to this.

I’m not defending rapists. I’m just saying I’m not going to put this person in a position where they can be raped. Solitary confinement is an option. Trans prisons are options. There’s not just women’s prisons.
i cannot condone the rape or sexual abuse of anyone no matter who they are or what they’ve done because that would make me as bad as them in my book. I want to make it clear I’m not defending rapists. He has no right to rape anyone but he also has the right to be not raped too. I can’t do him for something but then say it’s ok when I sanction it for you. Do you see what I’m saying? I’m not defending rapists. But I will defend anyone’s right not be raped, even if they have sexually abused someone else.
and my reasoning for this is it’s a slippery slope if we do. It has to be a blanket no on sexual abuse to protect women and girls.

I don’t know. I don’t know enough about it.
but I do believe I cannot put them in a male prison because of the safety risks, and if I do that knowing these risks I’m basically condoning sexual abuse. Which is always wrong. Period. And has to be to protect women and girls from male violence.
this is nuanced for me, I keep saying. I’m interested to talk to you about this. What do you think?

It is obvious that there would be this type of abuse in men’s prisons. The question mark is used to go have you not thought about these things because they seem pretty obvious to me.
I cannot condone abuse of anyone because like I said it’s a slippery slope. Lock up rapists by all means but I’m not going to condone rape of them because I don’t want to condone rape in the first place.
this isn’t hard? (Question mark used again to show I’m a bit shocked because this is obvious)

It’s not. you seem to have forgotten that religious belief is a PC.

Vastly more people self-ID into a religion for the purposes of getting their child into a specific school than self-ID into the opposite sex.

In fact self-IDing into a convenient religion is so commonplace it’s not even really seen as a bad thing to do, just a hoop to jump through.

I think this is wrong. People shouldn’t be allowed to self ID as a certain religion to gain access to education.

It is a good example though.

Trans identified men are men who say they are trans. Approx 80-90% of men who say they are women have a penis.

A man can obtain a GRC which allows him to get a female birth certificate without any requirement for him to have genital surgery or take hormones

The majority of men who have been placed in womens prisons have a penis.

Are you saying only men who have had genital surgery should be placed in womens prisons?

I don’t know. I don’t know enough about it.

I’m confused are you talking about female to male or male to female? Because you’re not using pronouns in a way that makes this easy to follow.
if you have a penis and you’ve committed a crime then no you should not be allowed around vulnerable women. But if you look like a woman and you’re likely to be sexually abused by other men you can’t just be left in gen pop in a male prison? Like I said this is very nuanced?

this kinda reasoning makes me rage tho, like people with DSDs are utterly irrelevant to trans people. and two, the only thing you need to do to be trans, is self-identify. trans people aren't doing medical tests to ascertain if they are trans. they are just saying "i feel like I am".

it is just the stupidest freaking ideology that rests on utter BS, and yet... in many countries we have to live under it's tyrannical rule and we're hateful bigots if we disagree with it. it's 2026 and we're still hardly better off than we were in when JKR made her fated tweet at the end of 2019, in many ways, we are worse off.

nothing else has ever made me lose more faith in fellow humans. gender ideology is just the dumbest freaking pile of shit ever.

Don't hold back 😂 (I agree with you btw, it is enraging, and a load of shite, but my wee country appears to want to embrace it. Fannies).

GlasgowGal2014 · 28/03/2026 11:14

Race is different to citizenship. Think of the UK and all the different race of people that live here. It is not uncommon for people to self identify with a different race. There are other white people who self-identify as black or Native American or south East Asian or Italian for example, sometimes when they have some characteristics in common but people also go to extremes and have surgery to make them appear like a different ethnicity. For example OIi London, a young man from England who has undergone multiple surgical procedures to make himself look Korean.

MeridaBrave · 28/03/2026 11:13

You can self identify as gay (sexual orientation) or sexual identity (transgender) or religion (say you decide to be Muslim or Jewish - possibly without a conversion of any sort). You can’t identify as female - the Supreme Court decided that . You can however identity as transgender.

He tends to frequent queer spaces because of attitudes like this, sadly. So a lot of your issues aren’t really issues.
idk i completely agree with most of your points but i don’t see how using pronouns of someone is any different to using their new married name?!

We're not only talking about your friend though. We're talking about anyone who thinks they should be able to use a space designated for the opposite sex.
I don't know what you mean by 'He tends to frequent queer spaces'. in this context.
i don’t see how using pronouns of someone is any different to using their new married name?!
A new married name is something you may have to work to remember (likely only until you get used to it), but it's not something that you'll keep on tripping up over because it's intuitively and obviously wrong like calling a woman 'he' is.
Also, people are not likely to round on you if you get a married name wrong, but social censure for not playing the trans pronoun game is sadly very common.

idk I’m not a politician and I don’t know if this is financially viable or wanted. But I do think putting someone with a vagina (even if it is by surgery) into a man’s prison is safe or fair, no.
